KOTA BARU: The average annual unemployment rate in Malaysia from 2011 until 2014 was at 3%.

Describing the employment situation in the first four years of 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015), Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said although Malaysia has more than 400,000 people looking for jobs at any given time, the government had set a target that 75% of graduates would find employment within six months of graduation.

Abdul Wahid added that more than 53,000 graduates with diplomas or degrees and those who passed SPM and STPM had benefited from the 1Malaysia Training Scheme (SL1M) introduced in 2011.

Speaking at a press conference after the closing of the SL1M career and open interview programme for the east coast zone held at the Pengkalan Chepa Industrial Training Institute here yesterday, Abdul Wahid said of the total, 19,700 were graduates who had undergone training and were directly involved in the programme.

“The rest were those who received assistance from outreach programmes, where we coached them on resume writing, interview skills and so on. — Bernama.

PETALING JAYA: The decision to cancel the scheduled Nothing2Hide dialogue between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and NGOs on 1MDB was not pre-planned, said Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

The Inspector-General of Police said it was made at the last minute after police received information that two groups were planning to cause trouble at the event.

“I made my decision to cancel after we determined that the information was credible.

“Even the Prime Minister was not too happy with me when I told him that I had to cancel it. He was getting ready to go to the venue.

“However, I had to be firm with him and insisted it was for the safety of everyone,” he said at a press conference in Bukit Aman.

The IGP said there were signs that the actions of the two groups could jeopardise public order and safety.

“I made the decision as it is within my purview to ensure the safety and security of everyone.

“No party influenced my decision. It is mine and mine alone,” he said, dismissing notions that the Prime Minister influenced him to do so.

Khalid also confirmed that the police officer who told former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to stop his speech had acted on his order.

“When the event is cancelled, that means every activity is cancelled.

“The event as a whole was cancelled and it was my directive to stop Tun Dr Mahathir,” he said.

The IGP also confirmed that a man was detained after a scuffle outside the hall, adding that he was later released on police bail.

“There was trouble even before the event started,” he said.

Najib: I was elected not via bonus votes and quotas

KUALA LUMPUR: Unlike Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he was voted in as Umno president in an open and democratic manner.

"I was the first Umno president elected under a new party constitution that is more open and more democratic," Najib, who is Prime Minister and Umno president, told a gathering of Umno veterans at the party headquarters here on Monday.

He pointed out that the previous Umno presidential elections had a system of bonus votes and quotas.

"Previously, anyone who wanted to challenge the party presidency had to have nominations from 63 party divisions. That is how Tun Mahathir Mohamad could stay in power for 22 years," said Najib.

He said he too could remain in power for 22 years by amending the party constitution but chose not to do so because he wanted to be elected sincerely by his party members.

"I was elected democratically, so why am I being disturbed. If there are problems, let us correct them. We don't want to destroy the party," he said.

Najib urged Umno members to support him as he would do his best for the party.

"I will do my best for the party and the nation and I will do my duties in Cabinet and the party's Supreme Council. But I need your support or I will be unable to carry all of this out," he said.

Tesla cars for Malaysia GLCs’ official use

KUALA LUMPUR, May 18, 2015:
Around 120 Tesla electric cars will be deployed here by year-end for official use of government-linked companies (GLCs), courtesy of Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC).
In a statement, Tesla Corp said it will officially launch its brand new Model S70D and Model S85 in Malaysia later this year, in partnership with MGTC.
Private car buyers looking to own a Tesla will probably have to wait until 2016, said the US-based sports car producer.
Tesla said the cars would be made available by way of a leasing scheme for a two-year period by MGTC.
They will likely be provided to GLCs as official cars, with maintenance to be handled by MGTC.
Tesla said MGTC leasing out these electric cars is to enable policy makers, as well as concerned stakeholders, to understand the benefits of electric vehicles – letting them sample the technology of electric mobility.

MGTC chief executive officer Ahmad Hadri Haris reportedly said the operating range and size of the Tesla cars were key in making the decision.
“Tesla Motors was the only vehicle that meets the parameters that MGTC has established for the programme.” Ahmad Haris said the sedan type and overall disposition suited the use of the Model S as official cars.
“The 400km range is enough for most of the requirements and no other electric vehicle fulfilled what was needed in an official car.”
While the leasing costs have not been finalised, Ahmad Haris reportedly said the cost will be in the range of RM6,000 per month.

KLANG: The RM42bil allegedly lost by 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) has not disappeared but can be accounted for in the value of the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) and Bandar Malaysia projects, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pic).

“Go and have a look at what is there. The Tun Razak Exchange has 70 acres and Bandar Malaysia has 500 acres.

“Five hundred acres in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. I regard it as a goldmine. If I were a wealthy man (hartawan) I would buy there anytime because I know of it’s value in the next 20 years,” Najib said in his speech at a special gathering of Selangor Umno and Barisan Nasional members here on Saturday.

Najib also refuted allegations that Lembaga Tabung Haji had bailed out 1MDB with its purchase of TRX land.

He added that the pilgrimage fund wanted to develop the land and this would have benefited its depositors.

On the audit on 1MDB, Najib said the files were currently with the Auditor-General.

“We will disclose as soon as the Auditor-General has finished investigations,” he said, adding that the report would be ready next month.

PETALING JAYA: Mohd Nazifuddin Najib, the son of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has denied any link with the controversial multi-level marketing company UFun.

Mohd Nazifuddin said a video, which had gone viral alleging his involvement with UFun, was a "libellous personal attack" in an attempt to smear his name and reputation.

"UFun has used my name to deceive buyers to encourage them to enrol in their ponzi scheme.

"I have no involvement with the group and have already told the police, Bank Negara and the Thai embassy of this incident when I first discovered it a couple of years back.

"I resigned from the posts of director and chairman of Sagajuta Group on May 31, 2012, a company that has been allegedly connected to UFun," said Mohd Nazifuddin in a statement yesterday.

UFun became a major controversy in Thailand for allegedly cheating more than 100,000 victims worldwide. Thai and Malaysian authorities have been on the hunt for those behind the scheme.

Several people have been arrested during the investigations into the scheme. Thai police are also looking for three Malaysians, who includes UFun group executive chairman Datuk Daniel Tay.

In two YouTube videos recently, Tay denied allegations that his company was involved in fraud.

Mohd Nazifuddin said this had been an "unfortunate" experience as he had inadvertently become the victim of cyber bullying.

"I will not be hampered by these malicious attempts to defame and character-assassinate me," he added.

KOTA KINABALU: Gunmen linked to the Abu Sayyaf stormed into a popular seaside restaurant near Sandakan and abducted the manager and a customer during dinner on Thursday.

The four men, one armed with an automatic rifle with bullets strapped on his chest and another with a pistol, burst into the Ocean King Seafood Restaurant at about 8pm prompting the patrons to flee.

The restaurant owner, Chung Yan Tsim, said his 48-year-old sister-in-law, who manages the restaurant, and the customer, believed to be from Sarawak, were bundled off by the gunmen in the raid lasting less than a minute.

"They fled in a boat. There wore no mask and there was no shooting," Chung said, adding that the customer was sitting with his family but could not run away when the gunmen barged into the restaurant.

Security forces have gone on an immediate alert as Sandakan is only about an hour's ride on speed boat from the southern Philippines island Bakungan Besar.

A massive operation is underway to hunt the group believed to be cross-border kidnap gangs linked to the terror Abu Sayyaf kidnap groups that operate in southern Philippines.

Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) commander Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun when contacted said they were at the scene and taking necessary action.

He declined to say anything further.

Sabah police have been hunting for a suspected armed gang of seven men spotted at a plantation in Kinabatangan about 100kms from Sandakan earlier this month.

They were also investigating a robbery at a lobster farm at Pulau Bait in Semporna where gunmen robbed workers of an outboard among other valuables but failed to get the owner of the lobster farm.

JOHOR BARU: A senior operation executive is in trouble with 23 Ah Longs, or illegal moneylenders, after he borrowed money to fund his side business of selling clothes and towels at a pasar malam (night market) here.

The 40-year-old man, who only wanted to be known as Ahmad, said he borrowed RM2,000 from an Ah Long in August last year as he needed the cash to pay off his suppliers as his business was not going well.

When he could not repay the Ah Long, his debt snowballed and he ended up borrowing from another 22 different groups of Ah Longs to pay off his debt.

"One thing led to another, I ended up owing them an accumulated sum of RM30,000 which I cannot afford to pay off now that my business had gone to the dumps," he said in a press conference here organised by Johor MCA's Michael Tay Chee Boon on Wednesday.

A police report was lodged by Ahmad Tuesday.

Rising cost of living cited as reason for asking for 35% increment

KUALA LUMPUR: Cuepacs is asking for a 35% pay increase for the lower-income civil servants to meet the rising cost of living.

Its president Datuk Azih Muda (pic) said it was one of several requests that the congress had submitted to Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Mohamad Zabidi Zainal in a memorandum recently.

Cuepacs also asked that the minimum basic salary be increased to RM1,200 from about RM800.

Azih said that at present, some 800,000 civil servants were earning a basic pay of between RM805 and RM820 respectively, which were below the national poverty line of RM880.

Cuepacs, he said, also hoped for a 10% to 20% pay increase for public servants in other scales.

He added that in the memorandum, they urged the Government to implement the 252 public service schemes before the Labour Day celebrations on May 1.

“The Government agreed to the schemes in August last year. We hope that the schemes can be backdated to Jan 1, 2015, just as it was for the pay rise of the Members of Parliament,” Azih told reporters after a gathering of civil servants at CIDB Convention Centre in Cheras here yesterday.

Azih said the Government had promised to conduct a salary review every five years but the last review was in 1991 while there were only salary adjustments during this time.

“We also appeal to the Government to review our salaries every three years,” he added.

Cuepacs has also asked that the minimum academic qualifications for applicants of public service be raised from PMR to SPM.

“Besides a slightly higher basic salary, a civil servant with a minimum SPM certificate will elevate work efficiency,” said Azih.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth has called for a detailed probe into the involvement of businessman Low Taek Jho (pic) in 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), after the latter called the wing’s leaders a bunch of “spinmasters”.

In a statement on Tuesday, Youth exco member Ibdillah Ishak criticised Jho Low’s remarks, questioning if the billionaire businessman was actually feeling guilty for his role in this controversy surrounding the Government investment arm.

“Who is this individual to say such things? Is Jho Low really involved and is he feeling guilty for this huge controversy,” he said.

Jho Low had hit out at Umno Youth during a recent interview with magazine Euromoney, criticising them for trying to pin 1MDB’s failure on him.

“There seems to be a very, very coordinated attempt to say: ‘This young Chinaman, it’s all his fault, he caused the failure of 1MDB and apparently he advised the PM and everything is screwed up now.

“It’s just crazy, and these Umno guys are spinmasters, they know all this sort of nonsense.” he was quoted as saying in the report.

His remarks angered Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who called for an immediate investigation into Jho Low’s involvement in the debt-ridden investment company.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Khairy said investigations into 1MDB should be hastened, voicing Umno Youth’s support for a detailed inquiry into Jho Low’s role.

Echoing his chief’s sentiments, Ibdillah said the matter could not wait any longer as it concerned the rakyat and the political survival of Umno.

“I hope the audit (on 1MDB) can be carried out transparently, and without protecting anyone’s interests.

“If Jho Low is found guilty of wrongdoing, action must be taken. There is no need to vilify Umno leaders just to save your own neck,” he said.

ROMPIN: The Rompin Umno Division leadership will reject any candidate from outside for the Rompin Parliamentary by-election.

Acting chief Datuk Hasan Arifin said the division was only prepared to accept a Barisan Nasional candidate picked from among the committee members of the division.

"We leave it to the wisdom of the party president (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) to decide on the BN candidate to contest in the by-election but the selection must be from among the committee members of the Rompin Umno Division and we unanimously reject any outside candidate," Hasan told reporters after chairing a special meeting in preparation for the by-election at the division's office, here Sunday.

The meeting was also attended by the division's vice-chief Datuk Seri Maznah Mazlan, secretary Datuk Wan Kadri Wan Mahussin and Information chief Datuk Jalaluddin Mohamed Deli.

Nevertheless, Hasan said the division was prepared to accept an outside candidate if there was a very good reason.

He also avoided a question over his name being among those considered, saying: "We leave it to the wisdom of the leadership".

Hasan also announced that Umno Deputy President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was scheduled to announce the BN candidate on April 18.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of incumbent Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis in a helicopter mishap in Semenyih, Selangor on April 4.

The late Jamaluddin was a six-term Member of Parliament from 1990. In the 2013 general election, he beat PAS Women chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh by a 15,114 vote majority. – Bernama

Traders who take advantage of GST sabotaging the economy, says Ahmad Maslan

ROMPIN: Traders who take advantage of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to raise prices of goods are economic saboteurs, said Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

He said the implementation of the new tax should allow people to enjoy a drop in the prices of goods as the GST rate is 6%, compared to the 12% imposed by the previous Sales and Services Tax.

“However, they are sabotaging the economy. Some goods are GST-free but they are arbitrarily imposing GST on them which causes the price of goods to go up.

“It is unacceptable if they say they don’t understand GST as we have explained for a year and seven months on television, radio and newspapers,” he told reporters after attending a function on current issues at the Rompin Umno office on Sunday.

Ahmad added that traders should adopt good business ethics or risk losing customers, and be penalised under the law. – Bernama

Caucasian boyfriend turns out to be Nigerian conman

KUALA LUMPUR: A 46-year-old woman was shocked when her Caucasian boyfriend, who she fell in love with on the Internet, turned out to be a Nigerian.

On Saturday, the teacher met the 36-year-old Nigerian at a hotel in Jalan Tun Perak for the first time because he wanted to repay the RM130,000 that she had lent him.

The man handed her a black briefcase containing US$22,100 (RM81,770) "cash".

"When she checked the notes, she knew that something was wrong so she called us," said Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainol Samah in a press conference.

ACP Zainol said the woman met the Nigerian two months ago on the Internet and they began "dating".

"The man pretended to be a Caucasian when they met on Facebook.

"After a while, he told the victim that he was financially constrained and that he needed her to help him," he said.

The woman wired RM130,000 into a local account as the man promised to pay double the amount and in American currency.

Five minutes after receiving the woman's call, police rushed to the scene and the victim informed them that she had received a briefcase containing cash, which she believed was fake.

When asked how she got the briefcase, she pointed at the man.

"So we checked and found that the 'cash' was fake. He was immediately arrested and brought to the district headquarters," ACP Zainol said.

Police then detained the Nigerian, who entered the country a week ago, at about 2.05pm.

The suspect is being remanded until tomorrow.

The case is being investigated under Section 489C of the Penal Code for possession of fake money.

Insurance agent attacked by parking touts for refusing to pay fee

IPOH: A 48-year-old insurance agent required six stitches to one of his fingers after he was repeatedly attacked by parking touts here for refusing to pay parking fees.

E.C. Looi had parked his car in front of a sundry shop along Jalan Theatre at about 1.30pm on April 2 when a woman approached him asking for money.

He refused to give her the money and continued to walk into the sundry shop. Later as he was approaching his car, two men demanded money, claiming that his car door had hit the woman.

When Looi denied such a thing had occurred, one of the men took out a knife and started asking for money.

He then ran back into the shop and the men chased him, pushing him to the floor and started attacking him.

Looi claimed there were three attempts to slash him but the first two times, he managed to use a basket as a shield. However, the third time, his finger was injured.

“As I was bleeding profusely, people started to gather at the shop and the two ran away.

“I got back to my car again when one of them smashed my back window, and the woman was lying on the road, claiming to be unconscious.

“My car keys were taken away as I was starting the engine, and I was pulled out of the car once again where they started punching me on my face,” he told a press conference organised by Canning assemblyman Wong Kah Woh at the state DAP headquarters on Tuesday.

He showed reporters the police report, CCTV recordings, as well photographs taken during the incident.

Looi said he managed to push them away and drove to the Pekan Baru police station nearby to lodge a report.

The police arrested one man, while another man managed to escape, and the woman was brought to the hospital.

Looi then went to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital to seek treatment.

However, two days after the incident when he passed by the area again, he saw the woman, and his assailant who managed to run away, back to their normal business.

Looi immediately called the police, and the two were subsequently arrested.

SHAH ALAM: Shoppers busy doing their weekend shopping at a hypermarket in Section 13 here ran helter-skelter when a goldsmith outlet there was robbed in broad daylight.

During the incident at about 5.15pm, five men wearing reflective vests and full-face helmets entered the shop located on the ground floor of the hypermarket.

According to witness accounts, one of the robbers kept watch near the shop’s entrance while the others smashed the glass casing where jewellery was displayed.

Several workers were inside the shop at the time of the incident.

It was learned that the robbery lasted about 10 minutes. Two gunshots were also fired, but there was no report of injuries or death.

The value of jewellery robbed is not known.

Shoppers ran for their lives after hearing the gunshots, while workers on duty at shops and kiosks nearby ducked for cover.

“I ran behind the counter to hide with several other colleagues after hearing the shots,” said a foreign worker who wanted to be known only as Ajmal. “Many people were running in panic. It was scary.”

The robbers were seen fleeing the area in a car.

Police were alerted and a team of forensics officers were sent to the scene.
