Budget of 3k and below for a laptop...best buy?

Fellow brothers & sisters of lowyat.net,

I've got at most 3k in my hand right now...and I need to buy a laptop. Planning to buy one in PC fair. Ok, here goes the requirements:-

1. I am not a hardcore gamer. From time to time I play simple games.

2. It will be mainly used for movie watching, surf net and chatting.

Now what is more of my concern is the warranty issues. I am going overseas (Singapore to be exact) for quite some time. So I need to know which brand provides a very good warranty, not only warranty...but also international warranty. I am actually considering Compaq. If you guys have any experiences of any sorts, please do share with me.

Any inputs, advise or suggestions will be deeply appreciated. Thanks!

[WTB] or Repair Altec Lansing ACS 45.1

The topic sounds a little confusing but i'll clear it up here. I am using ACS 45.1 for a number of years but yesterday, I "crippled" it. Meaning, I can't switch off the speakers by pushing both the volume up and down buttons now. I have to turn the power supply off. I cant turn it on sometimes even when I turn the power supply on. It will turn on depending on its "mood". I can't increase or decrease volume using the buttons on the satelite speakers as well.

This is what happened. My speakers are connected to an extension. When I wanted to iron my clothes, I connected the iron to the same extension my speakers are connected to. While ironing, I placed the iron on the iron holder made of aluminium that is attached to the ironing board. Just when the iron made contact with the holder, a loud "THUD" came out from the speakers and instantly they were turned off.

I persume this is due to the electric charges that were created when I was ironing my clothes. It travelled through the extension and then to my speakers. Thus, crippling my speakers.

So now the question is, does anyone know how to repair this tpye of damage? Or is it even repairable?

I would also like to know if anyone is selling off his ACS 45.1 and price for it just in case I need to get one? I am sure there is no more new ACS 45.1 speakers lying around in the market right? If yes how much will it roughly be? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Appreciate all inputs!
