However, universities like Helsinki School of Economics and Hanken School of Economics have a later deadline like April.

Sweden
Deadlines are between January - February. Universities application through the centralized system usually have deadlines in January, while individual applications are in February.

Students who have not graduated at the time of application deadline are welcomed to apply, however you will then be granted conditional acceptance i.e. you need to present all certificates at the point of registration in August in order to guarantee a study place.

3. Fees and Cost of Living

Higher education in Finland and Sweden are free of charge, but you need to pay a nominal fee (< €100) for student union membership (for benefits and discounts). Living cost in Finland and Sweden are similar to Western Europe average. Since the education is free, you are expected to pay for your accomodation, travel, food, books, and other expenses. You must prove that you are able to support yourself comfortably throughout your entire degree. This will be checked upon when applying for a residence permit. The stipulated amount varies between Finland and Sweden, and are as follows:

Finland
Have at least 500euros/month. But when applying a 1 year permit, you need to show a bank statement of at least 6,000euros (500euros X 12 months). The cost of applying a residence permit is 55euros (as of Dec 2008)

Sweden
Have at least 7,300 SEK/month. But when applying a 1 year permit, you need to show a bank statement of at least 73,000 SEK (7,300 SEK X 10). The reason why multiply by 10 is because accomodation rental is free for June and July. The cost of applying a residence permit is 1000 SEK / S$180 (as of June 2009).

Cost & Living Part II

Refering to my first post, the amount of 500euros/month for Finland and 7,300 SEK/month for Sweden is an estimation by the respective immigration for applying a residence permit. The total living cost depends on your lifestyle and also the city where you will be studying i.e. obviously costs in the capital will be higher.

Accomodation

QUOTE

If on bare minimum especially in Stockholm or Uppsala , do not turn on the heater , even in Winter minus conditions and do not call back home. Student flats are apartment-styled, either sharing with 2 or 3 people. Each student will have his/her own room. Size of room is around 20 m^2 +/- 5 m^2. Communal areas like kitchen, bathroom etc are shared. Cleaning is also shared. You may choose a furnished or unfurnished room. For furnished rooms, you need to pay an extra ~15euros/month on top of rental. Rental prices also depends on location, but should be about 170-250euros per month.

Sweden
Student housing in Sweden may be apartment-styled or dormitories. No matter what type you choose, you will still get your own room. Rental includes water, electricity, heater, gas but no internet. You need to sign a subscription independently. I believe the housing organization has tied up with internet providers to give you attractive rates. Some dormitories have an en-suite bathroom just like a master bedroom. If no en-suite bathroom, so you will share with 7-9 people. Kitchen and living area is also shared. Apartment-styled flats have 2/3/4 sharing, however unlike Finland, you need to find your own flatmates to share with. Rental prices should be about 1,700 SEK to 2,600 SEK per month.

Finland and Sweden
If you rent a room from a private owner, then yes, what acanthophis has said is true. Rent does not include utilties and internet. Maybe no furniture too. So paying for heater is very expensive.

Communication

Finland
I have never came across any international or local student using a landline. In Finland, most of the people use mobile phones only. I subscribe to DNA, where the monthly basic fee is 0.69euros per month (no free minutes or SMS) and outgoing call is 0.069 euros per minute. Incoming calls are free.

I can't comment about Sweden since I have not subscribe any lines before. But there are computer-telephone programs like VoipZoom and VoipStunt where you can call Singapore landline and mobile lines for free.

Transportation

I don't drive nor own a car but I reckon petrol is expensive. If you want to buy a second-hand car in Finland, it is rather cheap. A few of my friends got a second hand for 400-600 euros excluding road tax and insurance. Sorry I don't know details about the misc fees.

As for public transport, cost in larger cities are cheaper than smaller cities, well economies of scale ya know. Transport cost is approx 50euros per month, and same goes for Sweden. Anyway 50euros is about S$100 and Singapore is not that cheap either.

Thermal Clothes

Totally disagree with acanthophis. In Scandinavia, thermals are necessity and there will always be demand for it. In Singapore, people buy them only when going to cold countries hence demand is not there. One thermal set in ColdWear or WinterTime is ~$50-$60? In Scandinavia, the pants is as less as S$10-S$20. Thermal top is not really a must since you will have a thick shirt, followed by normal jacket and a outer winter jacket..that is enough for -20. Quality is also better in Europe.

Winter Jacket

Actually I've never surveyed any winter jackets in Singapore...but I am definitely sure that you have much much more designs to choose from in Finland and Sweden. Yes they are expensive though. But immediately after Christmas, there will be mega sales.

Medical

Finland
Irregardless of how long your course will be, in order to obtain a residence permit, you need to get yourself covered with a medical insurance that insures at least 30,000euros of your medical expenses. 30,000euros does not include death etc, just medical thats all.

Sweden
If you stay in Sweden for less than 1 year i.e. your course last less than 12 months, you need to get medical insurance. I am not sure how much does your medical insurance need to cover you. This applies for 1 year master program as well.

But if you stay in Sweden for more than 1 year i.e. your course last more than 12 months, you do not need to get medical insurance because you will receive the same benefit as the Swedish people as what they get from the medical welfare system.

Traveling in Sweden and Europe

No doubt that leisure traveling cost is an additional expense not included in the stipulated amount required for a permit. Yes traveling is costly in Scandinavia...but I believe UK is as costly as well since they are using british pounds. Also as a student in whichever country, you are definitely entitled to student discounts. There are also rail passes such as Interrail which is cheaper than EU Rail...Only Europeans or foreigners who have lived in Europe for more than 6 months can purchase this pass. If you go as an exchange student for 1 semester to Europe, you are allowed to purchase EURail pass only. There are many budget air and traveling by bus is also cheaper but tedious.

4. Insurance

As for private companies, it is up to the employers to decide how they want to hire the person. And hiring somebody is not based solely on which university he/she graduated from. It is more like how you are able to contribute to the company based on your knowledge skills and abilities.

Also NUS, NTU and SMU do have exchange collaboration with some of the Finnish/Swedish universities, and every semester there will be a bunch of local students going over to study. If these schools are not recognized or known, do you think NUS, NTU or SMU will collaborate with them?

Helsinki School of Economics (Finland) also has a branch in Singapore. However, they offer Executive MBA only, not BBA or MSc or MBA.

With my degree, I have worked for one of the Top 10 in Fortune 500 company (of course I was based in Singapore lah) and now I am working for the government. So yes, to answer this question, I strongly believe the degree in Finland and Sweden are recognized in Singapore.

Issue of Racism

Don't worry. Unlike OZ, there are no strong racism against us Asians in Finland and Sweden. I sense that most discrimination are against gypsies and refugees. This is because gypsies and refugees are entitled to the social welfare provision where they get free house, monthly allowance and all benefits without working; worst of all, they spend their time hanging out, stealing, creating havoc etc not at all contributing to society...all these while the Finns/Swedes and other working foreigners are paying high taxes to support them. So unless you belong to that category, you have nothing to worry about! In fact, they are curious to know more about you

Languages

Unless the medium of instruction of your course is either in Finnish or Swedish, you do not need to learn the language before going to the country. You can learn it while you are there or take up other languages like German/French/Spanish/Russian/Italian.

Career Prospect *** same here, don't know how it work in Malaysia

Yes I do keep in touch with them. I know of a Sporean who got a job in the best hotel in Finland and also in the biggest or second biggest paper company also in Finland. Both are HR related job. This person studied a Bachelor and Master in Finland.

It is, however, hard to get a job in SME if you are not fluent in the language. MNCs are the best options out there. Quite a number of Sporeans are hired by Nokia in Finland and Ikea in Sweden.

It is also easier to venture out to other European countries to get a job if you did your education in EU.

Regarding a graduate without any experience in related field, don't worry, very likely you are required to do an internship as part of your studies. You need to find an internship independently, unlike Singapore where they just post you here there everywhere without much effort on students' part.

[addedon]July 14, But I think you may apply with just O or A level cert. If you are shortlisted, the school will send you invitation letter to sit for entrance examination. Each applicant will be scored in different areas (result in previous studies + entrance exam + motivation etc) and the total points is 100. The higher the better. From there, the school will decide to accept you or not. Each program takes in around 20-40 people.

No SAT results. I applied to 3 schools, all 3 invited me to take exam, I was lazy and half-hearted to leave Singapore so I just went for 1 exam to lower my chances heh. This applies if you stay at your home institution throughout the course.

But you may choose to go on a 1 semester or 2 semesters exchange in another country. All students going for exchange will receive a grant like 2000 euros. Some universities also reimburse the cost of air fare as well.

And when you do an internship in a foreign country (depends on your nationality; if you are a Singapoean so anywhere except Singapore), the university will also pay you a salary on top of the salary you receive from the company.

Take part in exchange program if you can. But the problem is NUS/NTU/SMU do not have enough places for everyone to go on exchange. It seems the student must undergo rounds after rounds of screening before the best is selected.

In Europe, all students have the opportunity to go on exchange without the need of such screenings. So it seems like NUS/NTU/SMU must depend on the number of incoming exchange students in order to determine outgoing students. Because it is a 1-for-1 exchange.

[addedon]July 14, 2009, 3:37 am[/addedon]Qns: is the invitation to their entry exam held in finland itself?
Ans: You may take the entrance exam in Finland (at the respective schools) or the Finnish embassy in Singapore (located at United Square - near Novena MRT).

If you choose to take in Finland, I think there are several levels of clearance like paper, interview, group discussions etc. But in Singapore - due to resource constraints - so only the paper exam.

working part time in Finland allowed?

ans: (contributed by miss sokosjkl again!!)
Yes, part time work is allowed, but law says not more than 25 hours per week. So far so good.

Some of the jobs foreigners take up are:

1) Restaurant jobs. Usually in Chinese or Pizza restaurants. Work as dish washer, cook (simple food) or waiter. Not very nice working conditions and very competitive job among foreigners esp when certain nationality will settle for lower pay. The Finns usually get 8euros on weekdays and 14 euros on weekends. For foreigners, the pay will be standard throughout the week...about 5euros per hour. If you have worked long time at that restaurant, the boss may give 6-7 euros. Many foreigners are hired undertable so don't have to pay any taxes at all. Nice bosses will let you work max 8 hours per day, evil ones force you to work 12 hours per day running up and down non stop carrying heavy glass plates.

2) Deliver newspaper or advertisements. Salary depends on the number of types of newspaper/ads delivered. Work hours are good. One week 2 times and duration depends on your speed. Each delivery 2 hours or less. Their rule is very easy - e.g. "deliver before 9pm on Wed" that kind. Pretty much flexi time. You may work for more than 1 delivery company. Each company pays around 200euros per month.

3) Road sweeper or jobs related to cleaning in public. Cleaners are young people less than 30yo. Don't have old people cleaning on the roads like Singapore lo. So nothing to be shy about. Salary is quite good ~7 euros per hour.

eg: That part time Chinese tour guide earned 1500 to 2000euros per month (including tips). I think this job is only open for tourism students...and need to liase with Santa Claus village for this job. His last job scope was to stand inside an enclosed space at Santa Park (-10 to -15 celcius) for 8 hours where they had ice sculpture displays and make sure nobody breaks them, and also show them around like those normal tour guide job. Then also shuttle between Santa Park and Santa Village to show tourist around. I don't think this job is fun in the cold winter though... must be tough and strong

Working

If hired legally, first the boss must pay tax for you...not the cpf kind though. Then the person himself/herself must pay tax too. IIRC the first 1400euros is tax free. According to one Chinese girl, who works at a pizza restaurant at 5e/hr 26 hr/week, she pays like 60-80euros for tax.

If work in restaurant, unlikely to get 6euros as starting pay for foreigners.

And McDonalds that kind of place only hire locals

Internship

Internship is mandatory at Bachelor's level. Schools usually request for 30 ECTS (6 months) of work. Schools do bare minimum to help students get internship, they usually just forward placement opportunities or weblinks for students to go through. Students are free to apply to anywhere in the world.

Regarding salary, it depends whether the company will pay or not. The school will pay 400euros per month only if you do the internship outside your home country. And in the case for Singaporeans, means anywhere except Singapore.

lodging/housing
Off-campus means rent from private owners? Dorm means like NUS a block of flats full of rooms located on campus grounds?

In Finland/Sweden, each city has a student housing organization (not linked to any school in particular as one city may have more than 2 universities). The housing org owns many properties (apartment) and rents them out to students. The apartment is either 2 or 3 sharing where you will have your private room and communal bathroom, kitchen, living/dining, balcony. The apartment is in a block of flats that make up of many student apartments and there will be plenty blocks in each area to make up a student housing area. Utilities are included in the rent in student housing. Every student has the right to live in student housing as long as you hold a student status in the country (that means you can also live in student housing in ANOTHER city) Hope my explanation is clear

It seems Sweden has dorm style rooms where you will still get your own room, and share the communal areas with 5-9 people. The dorms are not located on campus...it is similar to how I describe above.

Renting from private owners in Finland is not very convenient for foreigners for the first time because they don't have a website in English. It is possible in the later part of your studies as you will have local friends to help you. Utilities and internet are not included in the rent.

Health Care
I personally did not seek medical care throughout my studies, and neither of my friends got sick to the extent need to go doctor so I don't have doctor/hospital experience to share. One guy got knocked down by car (not serious), so the driver took responsibility to ferry him up and down the hospital and took care of all expenses.

There is this insurance company called Atlas Insurance where you can choose the minimum insurance coverage starting from 0 dollars and above. Of course the higher the cheaper. If you chose 0 dollars, means even a bill of 1 cent can be claimed.

I didn't spend all 3 yrs in Finland, I went on exchange for 1 year..but I wasn't sick at all during my time in Finland. I think people will bring panadol or buy something from there. Flu shot is uncommon.

say, if you chose $0 dollar option, so every cent up to 30k is claimable
say, if you chose $100 option, so every cent from $100.10 up to 30k is claimable.

eg, if your medical bill is $180, and you bought insurance that starts from $50. so you have to pay $50 and claim $130 from insurance.
