Upgrading questions

Hey there, after 4 faithful years, I've decided to upgrade my old rig.
Have a few questions regarding choices for new CPU and Motherboard.

First off here's my current rig's specs:

Intel Core i5 750
8GB DDR3 RAM
XFX ATi HD5770
MSI P55-CD53 (MS-7586)
Silverstone Strider 600W PSU

Upgrading to :
Intel i5-4430/i5-3470
Sapphire ATi HD7870 XT
Gigabyte H77MD3H
128GB SSD Plextor M5S

Questions
1) i5-4430 or i5-3470?
2) Suggestions for another motherboard? (is this one good enough)
3) How much do you think I can get if I sell my old CPU, GPU and motherboard?

As was my purchase on 2010, I'm a semi-active gamer. Not so active but do love a good PC to support upcoming games. And as always, this upgrade must survive at least 4 years before another upgrade.

Any suggestions and comments are welcome. Thank you!

New audio card and 2TB External

Hey there, any suggestions to what audio card and a 2TB external hard-drive to buy?

I only checked the recent Viewnet price list, and going to buy the external even if the price is still high.

Also, my rig doesn't have a good sound card. I see Asus Xonar? Any suggestions? Probably not going to buy the rm500 one, too far off my budget

p/s I'm still noob when it comes to sound cards. If possible, can I request a simple explanation?

PC acting funny

While I was browsing the net just now, suddenly my PC go haywire.

Haywire in sense of, when i click on a link, it opens a new window, also during login.
When scrolling to type something, it doesn't show the blinking typing signal, instead it just selects all of my contents.

Also, when I go to windows explorer, when I select something, it's as if I presses CTRL and selected all contents to open.

You know windows 7's ability when you right click an app in the task bar, it shows the other commands ( like for CCleaner, it shows additional commands) ? After what happened above, it just doesn't work. Instead, it shows a normal "right click" option.

Also, when right clicking the desktop, there's another new option "open command here" with the other options like change background and goin to video card catalyst centre.

And, lastly, there's a "run" command now in windows menu, below "control panel".
What was weird was when I rebooted it, a pop-up of shift keys happened right at start-up. And when open mozila, it suggested safe mode. Never encountered this b4.

What's happening? I unplugged all external devices and reboot twice, but it's still the same.
Can ya help? This is a weird problem.

Low speed with LAN cable

Morning LYN forumers.

Its a bit early, but I'm desperate for an answer.

I'm having problem with my LAN cable that I bought. I over-estimated the length of the cable by 15m or so, rendering some of the cables being tied to save space.
The problem starts when I go to the internet, or play online games. The speed is woefully slow. 500bytes/sec anyone? And this is on a LAN cable on a new modem. I used a TP-Link Wireless Adapter b4 this, and the speed for download is 100-150kbps, but now after using the LAN, its seriously slow. I don't get it. Using a LAN cable is better right?

All who used the internet through my modem (wireless laptops btw, and the modem model is a TP-Link too) also experienced the same low speed connection.
I checked the driver, and updated into the new one, but I haven't checked by using a LAN cable, I'm back with my adapter for my desktop.

So what do you think is the root of the problem? The network driver outdated on my rig? Faulty LAN cable?

p/s Weird thing is when I didn't use the splitter, the speed is less, now that the splitter is used, its now higher. WTH?

After cleaning CPU fan,no boot screen.

Okay2,so two days ago,I decided to do a bit of a clean-up,literally of my new gaming rig. And so,I shut it down properly, and cabut every wayar, then take off the case lid slowly to see how much dust bunnies have been living in there. Turns out the worst affected region is the CPU fan/heatsink area, specifically around the "turbines" of it. I use the ordinary Intel fan since it was packed with my i5 when I bought it 5 months ago. So I just took a tissue, and slowly taking out the CPU fan to clean it up. By a bit of blowing, and slowling cleaning the edges with the tissue, the heatsink was finally clean, and I put it back again, with the CPU fan wire attached back, since I took it out earlier too.

After a bit of cleaning around the casing area,I finally finished my aim and decide to check if the cleaning was a positive effort, meaning lower temperature (the cleaning session was done because of the PC getting too hot).

Turned on the power button, but no boot screen. Nada. The DVD drive always flashes during boot, but this time,no lights at all,so does the keyboards. And no sound from mobo. I checked back the configuration, and IMO,it was like what it was before I cleaned it.

Now,I really don't know what caused it,since I didn't pushed the CPU fan too hard that the pins could have been bent, all wires were connected, and IMPORTANT one : The mobo was working as normal i.e the usual blue light turns on,the CPU and GPU and 3rd party fan is on and working.

What is the source of the problem? I asked my more experienced friends, but they dont actually know either, and they are not free to help. I asked some experts on techsupportforums.com and they said that I should clean the old thermal paste from the heatsink and apply new one. Why la? Does it have to do with anything? Oh,they also said to reseat the RAM and GPU back too. I'm still not good with applying stuff on my PC yet. Will need a 2nd opinion too,so that's where Lowyat's helping.

Thanks in advance.

Specs: Intel Core i5 750
XFX HD5770
2GB RAM
Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Oh,bought this stuff on Viewnet too. Before this, there was a pin problem, and we suspect it was from the packaging itself, and not that we inflict the damage to it.
p/s And if I say why heatsink needs a new thermal paste,I really don't know what's the function. If so,can someone enlighten me?
