What's a good wireless router for office?

Dear networking gurus,

So I searched the forum and the closest thread I found was like 4 years ago so I hope this isn't a repost.

My office has about 40 people and the Internet gets really crappy. Things are worse when visitors come by. I'm guessing it's the router that can't handle the stress, cos the connection is awesome when everyone goes home. It's a Unifi 20mb connection.

Any suggestions of what router I should look for? I think firmwares these days should also allow me to limit connection speeds and/or prevent torrenting?

Thanks very much!

Cheers
Michael

Quotation marks in Form input and echo

Hi guys,

Have a small question about quotation marks and can't seem to find the answer on my own.

Say if I have an HTML form, a standard one like

CODE

And at asdf.php:

CODE

<?php echo $_POST["submittedtext"] ?>

If the submitted text has quotation marks in it, then the echo outputs it with additional slashes. E.g.

Input:

CODE

This is a 'submitted' sentence

Output:

CODE

This is a \'submitted\' sentence

How do I fix this so that the input and output text is the same?

Thank you very much!

Appreciate some help with a PHP form

Hi guys,

Thanks in advance for your help. I know very very basic PHP and am trying to do a simple form to help with some work I have.

Basically what I am trying to do is input some text into a text field, and it shows in a separate area in the same page. Of course, ideally if it could be done in real-time it would be great, but for now I'll settle with just submitting the fields to the same php file and echoing from there. (Hope this is clear)

This is the code I'm using (rewritten for context):

Filename: thisform.php (hence the form sends to itself)

CODE

Headline:
Call to action:

This is the headline: <?php echo $_POST["headline"]; ?>
This is the call to action: <?php echo $_POST["calltoaction"]; ?>

When I submit the form, nothing happens. My address bar shows "/thisform.php?headline=asdfasdf&calltoaction=asdfasdf" but the body shows where it should be.

Please help! Many many many thanks.

Newbie needs help!

Hi guys,

Thanks in advance for your help. Have been spending hours trying to figure this out myself with no avail.

Basically I have a form where I want to fill in with an image URL and a link. The purpose is so that anyone can just fill in the form and update the image/link anytime.

The html form is as below:

CODE

And the corresponding php file:

CODE

<?php
{
$bottom_footer_url = $_POST["url"];
$file_url  = "slider_url.txt";
$fh = fopen($file_url, 'w') or die("can't open file");
fwrite($fh, $bottom_footer_url);
$url = fgets($fh);
fclose($fh);

$bottom_footer_image = $_POST["image"];
$file_image  = "slider_image.txt";
$fh = fopen($file_image, 'w') or die("can't open file");
fwrite($fh, $bottom_footer_image);
fclose($fh);

$fh = fopen($file_image, 'w') or die("can't open file");
$image = fgets($fh);
fclose($fh);
}
?>

<a href=<?php echo $url; ?>><img src=<?php  echo $image; ?> />

As you can see, what I'm trying to do is to save the data from the html form into a text file so that the page will continually show the image after filling in the form once. The problem is, what results is an empty PHP file:

CODE

Hope you can understand what I'm trying to say lol. Heck this may even be a totally wrong way to do this - appreciate your help.

Thank you in advance to all sifus for your help. I'm only an html super-beginner haha. Thank you thank you

How to co-own a website

Hey guys,

I wanna start a blog collaboration with a friend, but need your advice. Cos we plan to co-own the site where I gain from all online monetization (ads and stuff) but he gains from the product sales. Any advice on how to do this? Cos the site can only be owned by one person right? We don't plan to do a sdn bhd just for this lol. Thing is, if/when the site grows big, he may want to fully own the site - but the site's value changes with time, so how do we do this?

Appreciate your help, thanks!

Wanna start a website to explore earning online

I've been reading up quite a lot about earning online and stuff, wanna give it a try myself. Not expecting to earn more than RM20 for my first few months, I know I have to be realistic lol.

From what I can gather, there's many ways to make money online. Obviously from advertisements, also from selling tangible and intangible objects. Trading on eBay and etc also I know. But right now I want to take it step by step, that is to learn to earn money from writing. I know how to design websites, both HTML and Wordpress, plus how to market on Facebook, Twitter and others, so that part's pretty much taken care of.

Here's the problem though.

I don't know what to write about. LOL!

People always say, turn your passion into money. Cool. But my passions are just passions, I don't think I'm anywhere near good enough to tell people how to do things. I like technology, the internet and marketing via online means (I used to call it Online Marketing, but it seems it conflicts with the lingo "sell online, affiliate marketing, earn money online" - which is not my strength lol) - but I'm not a marketing guru or tech geek or authoritative figure. I just like tech.

So here's my question to you sifus who are earning money online through blogging or writing of any sort:

What do you write about, and do you have suggestions for me?

Thanks!

Facebook has Playboy game nao

Throw a “Playboy Party” on Facebook

GameStop’s social games publisher Jolt Online has just released its latest Facebook game, Playboy Party. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.

In a world where it seems perfectly natural to tend to a virtual farm or manage a village of Smurfs, perhaps we shouldn’t have been surprised that a game where you get to throw your own Playboy-tastic party exists, yet we are.

After getting over the initial shock and realizing that, “yes Virginia, there really is a Playboy Facebook game,” we did the only logical thing: We played the game for 45 minutes.

Combining the social elements of FarmVille and some of the mechanics of a game like The Sims, Playboy Party can best be described as what would happen if Darren Star (creator of such television classics as Melrose Place and Beverly Hills, 90210) had a Facebook game. It’s over-the-top, trashy and a lot more entertaining than it should be.

You begin the game by choosing and customizing your avatar and then going through a solo mode that shows you how to play the game. The goal is to basically create a kick ass party, making sure that the music is lively, the alcohol is flowing and that guests are taken care of. You can invite celebrities and Playmates to the party, which will help increase your popularity.

If people get too wasted, you need to ask them to leave so they don’t bring down the vibe. Likewise, if the paparazzi, out of control frat boys or the creepy guy from across the street crash the party, it’s your job to bounce them.

As you greet guests and get rid of unwanted people, you earn coins and fame points. Fame points propel you to the next level. When you move on to the next level, you are rewarded with extra items and collectible photos (that are basically bikini shots) and classic Playboy magazine covers. I ask you, in what other game is a 200 pixel copy of the March 1986 issue of Playboy (featuring Sally Field!) a reward?

As far as the “social” elements of the game — you can invite friends to your party and you can visit the party of other friends. You can also send gifts or prank your friends. Pranks mean you send frat boys, creeps or paparazzi to their shindigs.

The game is ridiculous and clearly more than a little sexist, but we have to say, we’re still a little bit impressed. It’s not that the game is fun or addictive to play; to be honest it really isn’t and it certainly is not addictive in the same way as other social games like FarmVille or Smurf’s Village. No, what makes the game work is that it recognizes how utterly inane and stupefying the concept of having a Playboy Party Facebook game actually is. It’s that sort of self-acceptance of its kitschiness, of the campy nature of the game that makes it succeed.

Plus, think about how much grief you can give your friends who do wind up playing the game. That’s a party right there.

Source: http://mashable.com/2010/12/01/playboy-party-facebook/

Update: Check out the game HERE!

Ima gonna start playin when I reach mah home tonite

Using PHP to send an email from HTML form

Hi all,

I'm a real newbie to HTML and PHP and all, appreciate your help with this. I have a form written in HTML which collects info and sends it to a PHP file for processing and sending to my email. Among the fields I have are:

Nature of enquiry: [     ]
Subject: [     ]

Is it possible to merge these two fields into one sentence when the form is submitted?

E.g.

HTML Form
===========================
Nature of enquiry: Lodge a complaint (name= "nature")
Subject: Price too low (name= "subject")
===========================

Resultant email
===========================
Subject: [Lodge a complaint] Price too low
===========================

I know the below code will not work, can it be fixed or do I have do to something drastic?

CODE

$subject =  "[" $_POST['nature'] "] " $_POST['subject'];

Hope you understand what I"m trying to say...
Need help: Including a rich text editor in a form

Dear All,

I'm new to web programming and am learning HTML and PHP as I stumble along, while trying to update my company's website. Appreciate if you could help me with one last element I need to make a basic contact form.

So far I've gotten it to work by posting the HTML form to PHP, which then sends it to my email. Problem now is, that the message box doesn't contain any formatting, so when it's sent over it's raw text. E.g.:

CODE

Hello World,
I need a lulz...
Will you give me one?
:(

Is received as:

CODE

Hello World, I need a lulz... Will you give me one? :(

I'd like to add some basic formatting functionality to the message box, and seems like the easiest way to do that is to make it a rich text editor or something.

Appreciate some help with this, really do. Or even to point me in the right direction will do.

Many thanks
Michael

Hello there,

I bought a laptop sometime 3 months ago, the ASUS X59SR (some shops list this as F5SR instead, dunno why), with the following specs:

C2D P8400 2.26GHz
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD3470 512MB Dedicated
250GB HDD
15.4" WXGA LCD

Got the following Windows Experience Index:

Processor Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz ---------- 5.4
Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB --------------------------------------------------4.6
Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 --------------------------------3.5
Gaming graphics 1791 MB Total available graphics memory ---------3.9
Primary hard disk 8GB Free (63GB Total) ------------------------------5.2

Bought this rig for about 3.2k. Thought it was a good buy but when I compared with a similar price model (HP DV4-125tx or something) on a game The Last Remnant, man I was so disappointed, the HP ran full specs of the game with minor lag but mine ran at 2~3 fps... Found out the difference was mainly the graphic card, the HP was using NVidia 9300GS 512MB where the Gaming Graphics specs was 4.6 as compared to my pathetic 3.9. Surprisingly enough though, the HP Graphics part was reporting at 3.3 as compared to my 3.5 (performance of Windows Aero)... hmm.

So basically my question here is,

1. Can I change my laptop's graphic card to boost my gaming performance?
2. Am I limited to any particular graphic card?
3. How much would a better one cost, averagely speaking?

Hope can get help from the sifus here

Thank you all very much

Cannot copy certain files, wth?

Dear all,

Very weird problem. I installed ProStreet and as a typical guy it's a cracked version, so we all know we have to copy the cracked executable file to replace the old file. But when i tried to copy it in, i get an error it won't copy. I'm using Teracopy, the error that was returned was "the file exists".

So I thought perhaps it was some new protection software from ProStreet, so I installed Transformers... But same thing happened. Can someone care to help me out, at least have some possible explanations?

Thanks!

[WTA] How to improve at home

Hello all,

I'm a "retired" accoustic guitarist for my church youth worship section - haven't seriously played since then (about 3 years I think). As such, I'm mostly familiar with the "normal" kinda playing, y'know, maj/min/2/sus4/7/maj7, mostly with the lower end of the fretboard as I had no reason to go up. Can pluck some, but rusty like heck now. Prefer to use the pick instead of fingers.

I'm now kinda thinking about relearning the guitar and expanding my knowledge to the more "exquisite" type of chords, y'know, to create the "wow-nice-chord-but-wth-is-it" kinda feel. I always feel that whenever I listen to songs nowadays. My final goal is the Tommy Emmanuel style of playing - one accoustic guitar to do everything. Still prefer normal pick to thumb pick tho.

I've tried looking for online resources but the problem is there's just too much. A guitar teacher would be great but I don't have the cash yet. So if I could get some help from some kind sifus here, some guide as to where exactly I should go, some song recommendations (with tabs/chords and etc of course) and etc would be great. Cos I'm now kinda too noob to decide what is best for me now haha...

Many thanks!

~Michael~

[WTJoin] Badminton Group in KLANG

Hi all,

Hope this is the correct section to post... I'm moving back to Klang for these two months, for the time being no badminton kaki to play with. Any groups here that I can join? A bit of me:

Name: Michael
Specialty: Netplay, dropshots, cross-court shots
Skill level: Slightly below college representative level, still consider quite good gua but not tournament level.
Availability: Any night except Tue/Fri night, Dec 08 to Jan 09 (perhaps up to Feb)

Prefer to play with younger people as "uncle type" people are generally not so welcoming so it's not much fun. To me, top priority is to have a good time, second priority is to have a bloody good exercise sweat-session. So I'd prefer to play with a group which is at my level or slightly higher, so that everyone has a good time.

Anyone have any suggestions for me, please leave a message here or PM is fine.

Many thanks!

Hi, I'm about to apply for a job vacancy in an IT software firm, it's a new company and I've already been interviewed by the MD. I'm now requested to send in my resume to him along with expected salary.

I've got a diploma in Electronic Engineering and 9 months of work experience in Marketing Field. How much do you think I can negotiate? I'm thinking of stating RM3000.

All advice is appreciated.
