Acer Aspire E500

To all the Experts out there :-

My GF just purchased a used Acer Aspire E500 from her friend. It came with a IDE CD-ROM and a PATA 40 GB HDD.

There are 4 SATA sockets on the RC 410-M2 Rev 2.1 ( actually it is a ECS mobo ) so I purchased a SATA DVD R/W and a 500GB Samsung SATA HDD cos she love to download those TVB series.

I can see the DVD R/W and the HDD are installed in the BIOS, but once I put the XP OS cd and boot, after awhile, the comp told me that their is no HDD, but I am sure that the HDD was inside the comp as shown in the BIOS.

I then tried to use Win7 OS but the same NO HDD appeared.

I check the BIOS number with the Acer Website and it is the same, but I also flashed the BIOS and install the BIOS from the Acer Website.

It cannot be my 2 OS cos when used the PATA ROM and HDD everything can be installed.

The staff from Highpoint told me that the E500 can used SATA ROM and HDD if I am installing Vista.

Any body out there can help me ??

How to connect to the web ( Mac OS 9.1 )

I just received a Blue Apple iMac from my uncle which he purchased years ago but hardly used. It is running Mac OS 9.1.

I can switch on and use it to play music from my CD collection.

After I connected the RJ 45 cable to the socket provided inside iMac, I clicked the icon ( browse the internet ) and a page with IE 5 for Mac appeared, a few seconds later, it said that my connection to the apple website failed.

I did try to go to yahoo and Msn with the same failure display.

I am using TM streamyx. My modem is Aztech DSL600E, my switch is SMC 8 port switch.

I used the windows 7 to find out my ip. These figures are given :-

IPv4 address : 192.168.1.3 ( preferred )
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Default gateway is 192.168.1.1

Any configuration needed to go to the web ???

I have just purchased an AMD System ( used ) without the mobo CD.The 1st Owner had installed a copy of Windows XP ( cannot be validated by Microsoft ), when I checked on the Hardware Device Manager, everything is in working order.

I decided to format the Maxtor SATA II x 80GB using my ori Software. Before formating, I downloaded all the drivers listed in Asus Website. After I installed my Windows XP Pro, I found that I have an unknown device ( PCI Standard ISA Bridge ) . I have searched high and low in the net for the right driver for this device but cannot find it.

Any users of Asus Mobo A8N-VM can help me???

MS word XP Vs Open Office 2

I was testing with my second rig ( Pentium P4 2.4GHz ). I downloaded Ubuntu from The Lowyat .net linked website and have completed installation into my 40GB PATA HDD. I can surf the net using my home networking, I can read the Chinese words in www.cn.yahoo.com.

I have a few files which are in Chinese and they are created using Windows Office suite ( copied and pasted from a Chinese Forum ) Both the Windows XP and Office XP are in English when I saved the files.

I took that Handy drive to Ubuntu 6.0, yes, the Linux can read what are inside the Handy Drive even the file names which are in Chinese. I just cannot read the content of the files which are in Chinese.

I double clicked the files, there is no response from Ubuntu. I then started the Open Office and open from there. Yes, the files can be opened but there are no Chinese words inside but 2 lines of stars.

How come Ubuntu can read Chinese from the internet but Open Office cannot read Chinese words from Office XP. Is it ONE of the limitation of Open Office ???
