Y510p with 2nd SSD Installed Successfully

Following my previous post, I finally received the Y510p HDD caddy from Hong Kong yesterday.

Upon opening up the parcel, I immediately knew that the caddy was too thick to fit in the Ultrabay although it was stated on ebay that it's Y510p-compatible. Damned! and I was not about to return it to the seller after waiting for so long.

Y510p optical drive is 9.5mm thick while the HDD caddy is 12.7mm thick

I removed the caddy top cover, trimmed away the back with a pair of scissors, installed a 120G SSD & inserted the whole assembly into the Ultrabay with the top exposed. However, the SSD was not detected by Windows. Damned!

Then I realised that the black plastic locking mechanism of the Y510p optical drive might double-up as a switch in turning on the power supply to the Ultrabay (just a conjecture). I dismantled the locking mechanism from the optical drive and fitted it onto the caddy. This time Windows was able to see the SSD. Uuu...Hhoooo...

Optical Drive with Black Locking Mechanism

Optical Drive with Black Locking Mechanism Removed

Caddy with Locking Mechanism

Oh yes... I made a cut on the side wall of the caddy near the connector & folded a piece of the metal onto the side of the connector to stabilise it and hold it in place. I think it is important to do that as the assembly board is too wiggly without the top cover.

Then came the tricky part of transferring Windows 8x64 to the SSD while preserving the Lenovo 'OneKey Recovery'. I kept the original Windows in the 1Tb HDD hidden just in case.

For those who had tinkered with the partitions, I am quite sure that your OneKey Recovery is not working.

Please refer to this link, Lenovo One Key Recovery (OKR) 8.0 ISO and Download and Setup Guide to get your original lenovo partitions restored. Please always do a full backup of your system.

I found this free partitioning program very handy: AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard 5.2 (PA Standard)

Y510 with NAKED SSD

I bought a local unit of Lenovo Y510p that comes with single GPU & DVDRW (Model: 20217) yesterday.

I have an old 2.5" Kingston SSDNow 120G SSD which I intend to use as a primary HDD and the lenovo 1Tb's as a backup HDD. I have already placed an order for a Y510 HDD caddy from ebay, ETA 1-3 weeks from Hong Kong.

An idea flashed through my mind today to insert the SDD naked in the ultrabay.

I removed the DVDRW drive and saw the SSD connector deep inside the ultrabay. I aligned the pins of the SSD to the ultrabay SSD connector and with a bit of patience, I gently insert the SSD inside the ultrabay until there was a sudden give when the SSD engaged to the connector. I confirmed that it was a good firm lock. I was ecstatic!!!

I fired up Windows but the SSD was nowhere to be found, nothing detected by the Windows Disk Manager. GGrrrrrr....... I took the SSD out and placed it in the external enclosure, Windows had no problem detecting it as an external HDD. I then re-inserted the SDD into the ultrabay until it locked, again no detection by the Windows as though there was no power supply to the SSD. I checked the BIOS, no SSD! Disappointed!

SSD in ultrabay

Ultrabay SSD Connector

SSD engaged firmly in the Ultrabay

Anyone got any idea?

iTunnel Suite 2.7 on iPhone 3.0

I had been cracking my head over this tunneling problem and I finally found a solution on the internet last night.
Just like to share. Enjoy.

"For those who have been wondering why you can't ssh into your 3.0 phone via iTunnel Suite 2.7 since you upgraded itunes, here is the fix..
1- Goto C:\Program Files\iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7 BETA\iTunnel\ and rename iTunesMobileDevice.dll to iTunesMobileDevice.dll_Original.
2- Copy iTunesMobileDevice.dll from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\ to C:\Program Files\iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7 BETA\iTunnel\"

Link
iTunnel Suite 2.7 Beta

Peace

Digi BB Extreme with Hidden Xtra

I had a pleasant surprise yesterday when I discovered that my iPhone 3G (FW3.0 JB) was able to receive and make calls using the Digi BB SIM (Extreme Package). Both incoming or outgoing calls could be received and made without any problems. However, there are a couple of things which I noticed:

1. No caller's ID
2. Unable to receive incoming calls if the iPhone is being used for internet browsing or downloading.

I plugged in my wife's Digi BB SIM (Discover package) in the iPhone, the voice call function was not working.

As far as I know, the Digi BB does not come with voice calls even with Extreme package. Could anyone with Extreme SIM confirm this?
Just hope that Digi will not charge me extra for the voice calls.
