Problem filling forms for study applications

Hi, my friends and I are applying for overseas university and also applying visa. The application forms they use have spaces for first name and last name, but we are confused on how to fill it (Chinese names), especially for visa which is official matter and very important.

If the name is Surname Given-name (i.e. Tan Ah Kao), then first name is Ah Kao and last name is Tan. This one has no problem because Ah Kao Tan does not seem confusing and most of them are used to it and they will understand.

The problem comes for my friends with names Western-name Surname Given-name (i.e. Jake Tan Ah Kao). Last name is for sure Tan, but if we fill up first name as Jake Ah Kao, it would end up as Jake Ah Kao Tan, which does not match the name on the Malaysian Passport at all (which reads Jake Tan Ah Kao). We cannot join the names, put dash or underline because it is an official matter and computerized.

So, we are hoping those of you which has been through such matter to help us out in this matter. First time encountering such problem and we will encounter the same problem in the future too. Thank you.

Internship resume

My friends and I are looking for our first internship so we drafted our first resumes. However, we ended up with 2 very different approach, condensed vs detailed.

The condensed means that we leave out small things like participation in written competition which a lot of people participate, those entrance scholarship that we get when we enter college/university and awards that does not relate to the job we are applying (i.e. award in chemistry when applying for investment job). The reason for this is to leave out useless or unrelated stuff out so that the resume does not look like a long list of awards and participation cert that make us look like we are bragging about them.

The detailed means that we list everything that we ever got mentioned above, even participation in runs and written competitions that didn't get any achievement. The reason for this is to show the employers that we are active, although not fruitful in the competitions. This is also to prevent that if we leave out the small things, employers who look at the resume will think that we are lazy or not active which in fact we are.

So, which approach is the suitable one? (We have no previous working experience and rely on high school/college/university background)

Opinions are welcomed

Questions about internship

Is it possible to be hired as intern only after 1 year in the university?

I never worked before, so with only my SPM and Pre-U, my resume is going to be very very short. Any opinions on how to "lengthen" my awfully short resume?

UK Universities fees hike

The Daily Telegraph

QUOTE

BRITISH MPS voted in support of a controversial government measure that could see the cost of going to college in the UK almost triple.

The much-debated measure gives universities the green light to raise the ceiling on fees from £3290 ($5266) to £9000 ($14,410) per year.

The vote went in Prime Minister David Cameron's favour despite pockets of dissent within his Conservative Party and serious discontent among members of its junior coalition partner, the Liberal Democrats.

The coalition's majority was slashed from around 80 to just 21 as 323 MPs voted "yes" and 302 opted for "no."

The numbers were identical for two votes.

The scene inside parliament was relatively serene, however, compared to the chaos that was ensuing outside.

Six police officers were hurt and nine people were arrested as student protests erupted into violence in the surrounding central London area of Westminster.

The Lib Dems opposed a hike in fees prior to May's General Election but party chiefs performed a U-turn after forging an alliance with the Tories.

One of the party's MPs, Mike Crockart, quit his post as a ministerial aide in order to vote against the coalition.

Sky News sources suggested Jenny Willott, another Lib Dem MP, had also followed suit.

Conservative MP Lee Scott also resigned from being parliamentary private secretary to Transport Secretary Philip Hammond.

All three had unpaid junior positions.

Lib Dem leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was jeered by opposition lawmakers when he arrived in the House of Commons for the crunch vote.

His deputy party leader, Simon Hughes, abstained instead of voting in favor or against.

The votes followed angry exchanges in parliament, with opposition Labour Party MPs warning that British college graduates would face the highest fees of any public university system in the developed world.

Several Tory and Lib Dem MPs also expressed concern before the vote took place.

Conservative Andrew Percy said he would rebel against the government because it was "wrong."

A police officer was seriously injured and several others hurt as hundreds of student protesters laid siege to London's Westminster, home of the British Parliament, as the controversial vote was unfolding inside.

From the education perspective and not political, what effects is it on us as international students?

Even if next year the fees for international student does not go up (I only read about the hike in the fess for domestic students), sooner or later, will the fees be increased for us?

With £9000 increased tuition fees, this makes it about the same (or at least, closer) as it is for international students, and as I heard, they will cut down on student visas, is it a good choice, or to the extent, is it safe to go to uk to study now? (Also referring to the current Europe economic situation, and us being the international students)

ADP in HELP

I'm finished my A Level this November and looking forward to actuarial science. The ADP Actuarial Science 2+2 or 1+4 program in HELP University College which they partner with University of Waterloo interest me. I've been searching through the forum and not much, in fact just a few, information that I could find.

Since that HELP-Waterloo program isn't much ''famous'' that other general ADP at Taylor's, Inti or Sunway, are there many students studying this program now?

If I got exemption for 1st year creditfrom my A Level, can I used that exempted credits to transfer them to University of Waterloo?

HELP-Waterloo program requires a 3.7 gpa to transfer, I wonder are there many students that make it to that grade in order to be transfered to University of Waterloo?

Those who not doing this program but studying in HELP University College might be able to shed some light on this. Thanks.

Internship

In general, I'm curious, when do students usually go for internship? After 1 year of university studies?

I'm finishing my A Level this year-end and probably going to UK or Canada to further my studies. As I have roughly 10 months of ''free'' time in between (Nov 2010 to Oct 2011), instead of working as a waiter or in Macdonald's, I was thinking of working in something that might relate to what I would be studying in the future (ie office work). Is there, any possibility at all, to do internship with an A Level qualification? (I searched the net and found that there is a slight chance of doing so (in overseas) with minimal pay but I'm not sure about it in Malaysia.)

American Degree Transfer Program (ADP)

About ADP credit transfer, Canadian and US universities do 4 years bachelor program which come after pre-U, why ADP credit transfer in Inti/Taylor/HELP can be done after SPM and only for 4 years (ie 1 year faster compare to studying a year of pre-U then enter university)?

If I enter ADP program after A Level, would this mean I'm now 1 year slower than those who enter straight after SPM? Would the Year 1 subjects be the same as what I studied in A Level?

A Level Retake

My results for AS was not what I hoped for and I thought of retaking it just in case my A2 do not turn out well but there are 2 contradicting opinions. This is related to applying to UK universities.

I went to a education agent, and the officer there said that some UK top universities would not even consider people who retake their exams. He said retaking gave the impression that a student takes more time to achieve better result rather than an average result in a short time. However, there are some people saying there are no harm retaking the exam as the universities would not bother and take the better result.

As I have to decide soon whether or not to retake my AS exam, hopefully someone can help me to clear my mind.

Dilemma (Engineering)

I've done a rough calculation on the tuition fees undergraduate engineering cource, due to the drop in Pound Sterling and the rise in Australian Dollar, I've found that now going to a UK university to study engineering for 3 years now cost RM 350k~450k while going to a Australian university for 4 years cost 450k~500k. I know that Australia university courses are 4 years that's why they are more expensive. So, is it worth going to UK or Australia base on the fees?

I've heard that Nottingham University Malaysia's 3 year engineering courses are not recognized locally because they only recognize 4 year courses, but what if I study 3 years for bachelor then continue 1 year master overseas, would my master be recognized?

Is Nottingham University Malaysia's engineering courses good comparing to overseas universities? I was thinking of saving money by studying bachelor locally and take master in overseas. If Nottingham Malaysia is good, why should I pay 4 times more to go Australia or 3 times more to go UK? Is it worth to do it locally for engineering bachelor degree?

I heard people says that Singaporean universities prefer students with their own Singapore A Level than Cambridge A Level, is this true? If I'm taking Cambridge or London A Level, would my chance of getting into Singaporean universities like Nan Yang Tech or NUS be slimmer than others?

I search threads in the forum regarding aeronautic engineering, and most of them are talking about universities in UK, US, Singapore or even Malaysia that provide that course, but there are only a few regarding this course in Australia? Does Australia have any good university that provide this course? Or is it better to go UK/US?Singapore/locally to study aeronautic engineering?

Mechanics or Statistics?

I'm taking A Level course in Disted College. In the time table, they put Mechanics and Statistics in the same time slot because every student only get to choose one. I'm also taking Further Maths, which means I have to study both Mechanics and Statistics for Mathematics. During orientation, they said that those students who take Further Maths have to choose to attend either one of them, and study the other one themselves. So, I want to ask, which one of the Mechanics or Statistics is easier to study by myself at home? Which one is easier to ''digest''?

Lack of interest

I'm writing about one of my friend who has no clue what so ever what he going to do next year after the coming SPM this year.

He's result are above average, got As in most of the subjects. His Mathematics and Add Maths are his best, most of the time he got above 95 marks and sometimes even 100, and had been called to participate Mathematics Competitions a few times although he did not win any of them. A few of his friend and I suggested to him to pursue courses that involve Mathematics skills like Mathematics courses or Actuarial Science but he said that he has no interest in Mathematics, just that he does very well in the school's exams and syllabus. He does not practice his mathematics a lot but he is able to score pretty well in the exams. We suggested him to continue doing Maths after SPM so that his 'talent' would not be a waste.

I tried to ask him about his interest, like planning or doing business, but he himself said that he has been searching for his interest for years and none appeared. He pass his days like any other days, go to school, sleep, eat, watch TV and play computer games most of the time, and does not do anything else like own-researching, self-enrichment or anything like that, in Chinese we say '得过且过' (sorry, I do not know how to express it well in English). In studies, I think that he would not have a problem. He's the kind that rarely study and only study last minute when it is close to exams, and yet he is able to achieve good results. The thing is that he takes the subjects as something we all have to learn but not to find interest or to be interested in. If he continue his education, he would not find it difficult, but the lack of interest would lead him to uncertainties, maybe after he got a job he would not like it.

He comes from an average family, barely can afford him to go to private college or private university. If he continue to STPM, I'm afraid that if he is enrolled into some courses that he does not have an interest in. At least in local private institute he get to choose and have the time to decide. I suggested to him the other possible means like scholarships, but he does not bother to find one or even go and apply for one. I have seen a few of my friends with average result like B, C or D have the determination and the goals they want to do later on, but my this friend has the knowledge and ability, but has no target. It came across our mind that maybe he has no interest in education courses, maybe he likes art or computer, but he deny he have such interest. SPM is 2 to 3 months away, I know it is still long way to go, but he has been chosen for National Service and if he is going to enroll into private institute, he have to decide from now.

Can anyone give their opinions to this 'lost sheep'? Any help or opinion is deeply appreciated.
