RIP Salomon 😭 not the one you are thinking of...

my Salomon HPS Wolle Nyvelt Fish 2026 model retired during a powder day at Maiko Snow Resort, Niigata.
spent the day exploring Nagamine and Okusoechi area, hunting fresh pow through the ungroomed slopes and trees. epic condition considering the shitty snow that Japan got in 2026
then during one of the runs, the nose edge separated (must be salah those eco-friendly epoxy )

it was ridden from 10 Jan to 26 Jan 2026, only 17 days of life, but what a way to go..deep powder, trees and one last epic day.

Fast forward to present day
So i sent it to repair around the end of January 2026. they called back after 2 days to confirm the repair fees and i gave the go ahead..in mid feb I called them for a status update and they said they will call back when it's fixed..

and now it's already almost end of September... was starting to worry that they lost it or something so called them again to ask about it and after they checked, they informed that my board is ready to be picked up (must had tried to reach me by fax )

Head 150cm rocker: learned the basics on it, soon found its limit in pow
Yonex 135cm flat-rocker: wanted the fattest & short for pow and narrow trees, and a super fun board to spin about. rode many crazy storms, learned that while fat really floats, its instability trained and burned my legs
HPS 153cm fish: wanted a dedicated pow board for all that storm chasing adventures, with the fastest base, great float and yet playful. although it lasted less than a month, had some of the best time on it. an absolute pow hovercraft, however bit bucky for uneven snow. board was "fragile", must be those eco-friendly epoxy..
Stranda 159cm cam-rocker: wanted a tank to blast through everything, handles pow with the fastest base. while the board was a little too much for me atm, lord it's one tank that just blast through uneven chopped up afternoon snow. very demanding board, requires precise inputs while it gives u the confident that you can land drops when flying off the edge. doesn't feel nice at all if you are lazy with it, feels like big stiff plank.

have you ever finished a work meeting and felt: "Fk this shit..I need a good dinner and a getaway holiday?"

this is a true stori, happened last month after an important friday afternoon meeting, mentally checked out.
texted waifu whether we could eat chicken rice for dinner and let's go travel tomorrow..and sending here a couple of hotel pics i randomly found on the travel site.
location doesn't matter, i was just randomly clicking some prefecture, city, see the hotels if any caught my eyes and send to waifu..
in the end, we decided to stay at a country club somewhere in Izu

on saturday morning, i reserved the express train ticket for like 11am train but missed it by 2 minutes..
on the side note, should had reserve the train ticket the night before so that i could plan the morning better but oh well..had some good beer and went to sleep

every year without fail, I would stay at my friend's house, my family are like a family to them

it's funny that I lived in Ishikawa for so many years, have seen this rice milling machine everywhere but never used it before. so the yakiniku store owner showed me step by step how to use it, extremely amusing

so the unpolished rice goes into the machine, you select what level of white rice you want..put in 100 yen and watch the machine grind the brown rice into perfect white rice

Recently ran out of storage and damn SSD/HDD prices were through the roof...still have to empty wallet for the 14TB Exos drive for primary backup
Load up the first bay with 1TB SSD with proxmox installed for the little 4-bay SMB enterprise NAS that has 10GbE and ECC mems

now let's redo my homelab
how my little homelab looked at the end of 2025

start of the rearrangement, move the equipment from the top shelf to the middle shelf. at least when earthquake, nothing will fall on top of the NUC, etc.
Since a lot of power cables and almost all of the devices can run off 12VDC, i embarked on an AC adapter purge.

I also have a 24V 1kWh LiFePO4 battery sitting in the closet, finally can put it to good use as failover battery power (used to be my car camping battery)

saw this automatic transfer switch on aliexpress and they marketed it as 0-sec switching time..i tot it was marketing bs since relay need a couple of ms to switch over...opened it up and whew, beefy 60V 235A power mosfets

adjusting the server psu 12v rail so that when the primary power is on, the voltage difference from the battery input is high enough so that it doesn't accidentally switch over to battery

most of the DC power distribution mounted on the DIN rail, all the power cables connected to the quick connect distribution block, very convenient

tested the failover, works like a charm..pulling about 65W from the battery

TGIF, let’s go eat gai fan…

Ayam love chicken rice, especially Bandar sri damansara’s old Woh gei chicken rice store IYKYK..but too bad the uncle got covid and passed on

Been trying different chicken rice every once in a while but good memory always tastes better

So tonight ayam try atas chicken rice n see if can replace my dream chicken rice or not.

How expensive can a plate of chicken rice be…2800 yen or rm70…

Gotta give it to them, the chicken rice itself is real nice. For 300 yen a bowl, it’s great value. The chicken…it’s very smooth for sure, skin all just nice, soy sauce well balanced.

Chilli could have a bit more flavour, it was very mute…ginger too..didn’t like the black soy sauce. Soup was mediocre

Now this one is worth coming back for besides the 300 yen fragrant rice. Best gu lou yok in Tokyo, every piece of meat perfectly fried, batter thickness just nice

Lastly, wa tan hor…this one look nice, smell also nice…taste also initially nice. But texture gone case, too much starch, it’s like the chef accidentally dropped half a pack of potato starch into the soup..
Kuew teow also got weird texture and aftertaste…so far I don’t think I found any proper kuew teow in Japan ever..
But damn scallop size so big and the prawns…
It’s a miss…

Today lazy cook lunch so browsed google map for surrounding restaurants...while i tried most of the noodle joints within 2km from my place, i haven't visited the opposite end of my area.

So put on some sunscreen, long sleeves, cool spray and cycled for a couple of km under the blistering hot summer sun to try this ramen joint

Usually I would try regular ramen like salt/shio ramen during the first visit but this special ramen looked interesting enough to risk it

3 types of mushroom and cheese tomato noodle, inspired by the chef's image of a noodle version of pizza

Flat la men noodles, in tomato broth with flamed cheese and 3 types of baked crispy mushrooms with char siu

Usually I don’t really like tomato soup, it’s either too tomato tangy or too watery n plain…but this one is really well balanced.
they also provided tobasco sauce to give the soup more sour n spicy kick, but i prefer the soup as it is...if they got bread, would finish the soup

I think the most out-of-place ingredient in the bowl is the char siu. crispy baked mushroom really nice and fragrant, and the flamed cheese meleleh definitely beats MY version fake cheese

overall 8/10, would cycle under the hot sun to try it again.

winter over ayam sad, have to wait another 8 months for winter...
looking back at my snowboard trips footage helps scratch that itch, so this year I tried video editing for the first time

first video was an uncut backcountry run..fast forward slow sections, slap a few title, subtitle and ending text in iMovie and called it a day...low effort
2nd try I wanted to put more effort and see where it goes..so another uncut single run at almost 100km/h video using Final Cut Pro. dayum, not easy to use no see tutorial straight jump into it, only could add some transition effect, logo. this one look great eventhough it was a relatively simple one.

this time is the 3rd try with even more effort "invested". trying to do more story like video..
- no real plan (probably my biggest mistake), just dump all available clips, filter through them, then put them into a chronological sequence
- wanted to work on adding some background music but waifu said raw best, so raw snow/wind/background noise it is
- 2nd video footage all in HDR, exported also in HDR with ProRes422 HQ, fukken big file such for a short clip somehow youtube didn't pick up the HDR metadata properly and the comments i got was oversaturated on non-HDR display. so this round converted everything to SDR, export SDR with ProRes422, 50GB for a 6 min clip

Winter car camping & backcountry snowboard trip

This year winter has been pretty odd, crazy temperature swing, sometimes massive snow dump then next heat wave same everywhere in europe and america..
Weather forecast hasn't been good, so signed up for a backcountry tour at Nozawaonsen to escape to nature

just 2 weeks from such a long vacation..travel itch strikes again
this time domestic travel, looking at google map...scroll up down left right of central Honshu...
then I remembered a place that I wanted to visit since I always snowboard in the adjacent mountain: Kusatsu, Gunma pref.
was mainly interested in visiting its famous yubatake, so another impromtu trip..

couple of days ago saw a thread in /k about octoberfest, thought i share this year Octoberfest pics

some backstory before the main content..
some years ago, a Swiss guy i randomly met on the net invited me to yokohama's octoberfest, can't say no to free beer
turns out he's a pretty nice and cool person to hangout with, we became toast brothers

the legendary beer-bonded bromance continues...

this week he came over to Tokyo again for holiday, took him out for yakiniku to meet my son

after some good sizzling, i invited him over to my place to lepak and try some of the new liqours that I just brought back from Kaohsiung Taiwan last week
so after testing out the award winning lychee sweet wine, the stronger lychee liqour, red sugar cane rum and lihing that I brought back from my KK trip..
he said lihing is the best in his opinion. Malaysia boleh

the swiss army knife that he promised to get me the next time he visited so pretty! and also a lot of chocolates

yesterday night we met up again before his flight..

at first I wanted to invite him over for homecooked "Best in Tokyo Malaysian food" or Octoberfest, but since he don't like the taste of fish or the sea..i thought maybe it's safer to just go with beer

Immigration part really terrible…since got stroller, went to look for manned counters. One officer just simply ask us to go to the other end de counter, okay…
Walk to the other end, Krik3…no ppl at all for the Malaysian counter. Ask another officer near the pejabat, they pointed back to the same empty counters.
So we stood in line for empty counters for quite some time until some officer noticed oh got ppl and notify his colleague..
Slowly walk over, sit into the booth…tap3…
Ok, immigration rant over.

Summer in Japan is typically oppressive, overly humid with crazy temperatures
but sometimes, late evening have some pretty mild weather, good for walking

seems like there's some dog event, so many big dogs..no idea how there keep such big dogs in tiny shoeboxes in Tokyo

Took half day maternity leave meet up with friend go makan2 again..
Since I had some restaurant I wanted to try but lazy/impossible to queue during normal times..
my crazy plan was to first eat a very popular hamburger joint in Harajuku then rush to Shibuya to get the reservation ticket for a Michelin soba house in Shinjuku.
Glad to have a wingman to go makan..

Met up with a ktard that every year would help me brings over luggage full of groceries from MY, like 15-20kg..
But this year probably the last time… so we went out celebrate along with waifu’s birthday

I wanted to try this particular omakase spot in Ginza for quite some time..since bringing the baby along with stroller, we got the table instead of counter seat
