What is a Ford Fiesta?
The Ford Fiesta is a supermini (or B-segment) car manufactured by the Ford Motor Company (FoMoCo). First sold in 1976, it is now in it's 7th generation.

Who builds and sells the Fiesta in Malaysia
Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC) is currently the only distributor of Ford vehicles in Malaysia. The Fiestas sold in Malaysia are assembled in Rayong, Thailand.

Ford is an American company, but why some people regard the Fiesta as a "Continental" or "European" car
The Fiesta is developed by Ford Werke GmbH located in Cologne, Germany. On paper, Ford Werke is FoMoCo's European branch, and for all intents and purposes, it is. However, vehicles that are developed in this Cologne branch have handling, utility and stylistic strokes that are markedly more European than American. In fact, only the Fiesta Mk1 and Mk7 was sold in the US market. Most of FoMoCo's global passenger vehicles (Fiesta, Focus, S-max, B-max, Kuga etc.) are developed by Ford Werke. To reconcile this confusion, the Fiesta can simply be regarded as an European car with an American badge.

Is the maintenance expensive?
All new Fiestas come with 6 free services up to 60,000 km. After that, a regular oil change should cost around RM200-300. Spare parts are slightly more expensive then it's Japanese counterparts. However, there are an abundant of replica and OEM parts for Japanese cars in the local market, something that Ford does not have. Therefore if you seek to lower your maintenance cost via replica or OEM parts, there are limited choices.

My Fiesta Powershift judders and jerk at low speed, is this a cause for concern?
Yes and no. Since the powershift is a dual-clutch gearbox, minor juddering and jerking especially at low speeds are inevitable, and is often accompanied by a grinding sound as the clutch are closing. However, if the juddering becomes so serious that is affects driveability, such as severe juddering at high speeds, then it is not normal and you should send your car to be inspected at a SDAC service center. The clutch is also very susceptible to heat; stop-and-go traffic under hot weather with high ambient temperature will often lead to clutch slippage. Once the clutch cools down (either through engine shutdown or driving fast enough to air-cool it), it will operate normally.

Terms like "HPF" and "UHSS" are currently in trend in the automotive safety aspect, much thanks to Proton's effort to ram up it's overall safety rating of it's fleet.

Since there is so little information regarding AHSS (Advance High Strength Steel), I would like to share some knowledge I learn from various source regarding this matter.

AHSS are complex, sophisticated materials, with carefully selected chemical compositions and multiphase microstructures resulting from precisely controlled heating and cooling processes so that the metal is exceptionally strong yet malleable. These steels are crucial in today's automotive world, as they enable automotive manufacturer to meet the challenges of today’s vehicles for stringent safety regulations, emissions reduction, solid performance, at affordable costs.

There is various AHSS, such as:

Dual Phase (DP)
- Consists of a soft Ferrite matrix and discreet hard Martensitic islands
- High energy absorption over a distance and resists to fracture
- Mostly found in doors, hoods, front and rear rails and cross member

Complex-Phase (CP)
- Mixed microstructure with a Ferrite/Bainite matrix containing bits of martensite, Austenite, and Pearlite
- High energy absorption and resistance to deformation
- High wear resistance
- Found in fender beams, door impact beams, and reinforcements for B-pillar

Martensitic (MS)
- Martensitic matrix contains a small amount of very fine ferrite and/or bainite phases.
- Extremely high strength, up to 1.7 gigapascal ultimate tensile strength
- High weight to strength ratio made it suitable for body structures, and tubular structures such as door intrusion beams, bumpers elements, springs and clips.

Transformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP)
- Multi-phase microstructure with a soft Ferrite matrix embedded hard phase matrix, contain high amount of Austenite, Martensite and Bainite
- Excellent form-ability and a high capacity for stretch
- Found in parts that require high crash energy management, such as cross members, longitudinal beams, A- and B- pillar reinforcements, sills and bumper reinforcements

Hot-Formed (HF)
- Typically Boron based steel (0.002% - 0.005% Boron)
- Steel is heated, then stamp in a special die with rapid quenching capability. The stamped steel is cooled inside the die, resulting little to no elongation.
- High strength and reduced spring-back properties
- Applications include reinforcements for and A- and B-pillars, roof, floor sills and side-wall members

Once upon a time, a Mopar 528 big block Hemi is consider the only way for big power, completely ignoring all fuel consumption inquiries and environmental concerns, for the sake of power.

While not all sane human being in the worlds will satisfied with the single digit fuel consumption reading these monstrosity engine provides, thus most if not all of us had turn our head into puny 4 banger that are stuffed into most car in the market, that produces a pathetic 150-ish horsepower that will not suck dry our wallet and leave mother earth soaking in excessive carbon fumes.

Till today, where out of sudden, the good old forsaken piece of technology that existed at least 100 years ago spring back to life in the name of fuel efficient, yet produces enough power to make any little engine roar like never before.

For those that are still late to catch up, here is a pretty decent explanation of what is a turbo

Nobody stops technology, not even grease monkey can resist the temptation for more power. After all those years in the garage tinkering with various method to boost more air into the engine's combustion chamber, there is currently 4 type of turbo set ups available to the mass market that provides different characteristic to power output and another 2 is on the way to greet us in the near future.

1. Single-Turbo

The far most easiest way to set up a turbocharged engine is by plonking a turbo into the engine bay, sort off.

A single turbo alone have lots of combination possibilities, by differing the size of compressor and turbine will in turn provides completely different torque output characteristics. Generally, Large turbos will provide much of it's power at the high end while smaller turbos will provide better low-end torque as they spool faster.

- Cost effective way of increasing an engine’s power and efficiency.
- Simple, generally the easiest of the turbocharging options to install.
- Allows for using smaller engines to produce the same power as larger naturally-aspirated engines, which can often remove weight.

 Disadvantages
- Single turbos tend to have a fairly narrow effective RPM range. This makes sizing an issue, as you’ll have to choose between good low-end torque or better high-end power.
- Turbo response may not be as quick as alternative turbo setups.

2. Twin Turbo
The more the merrier do apply in automotive industry. Period.

3. Twin-scroll Turbo

Finally, the first big gun in the industry, that is considerably better in nearly all aspect in comparison of a single scroll turbo.
As internal combustion engine runs in pulse, where each cylinder is fired at a particular order that we are able to identify the current stage (intake, compression, power, exhaust) of a cylinder in any given moment, we can harness the exhaust gasses with even more efficiency. Conventional single-scroll turbochargers route all those pulses of exhaust into the turbine in a way that causes them to collide and interfere with one another, reducing the strength of the flow. On the other hand, a twin-scroll turbocharger gathers exhaust from pairs of cylinders in alternating sequence. For example, on four cylinder engines (firing order 1-3-4-2), cylinders 1 and 4 might feed to one scroll of the turbo, while cylinders 2 and 3 feed to a separate scroll.

- More energy is sent to the exhaust turbine, meaning more power.
- A wider RPM range of effective boost is possible based on the different scroll designs.
- More valve overlap is possible without hampering exhaust scavenging, meaning more tuning flexibility.

Disadvantages
- Requires a specific engine layout and exhaust design (eg: I4 and V8 where 2 cylinders can be fed to each scroll of the turbo, at even intervals).
- Cost and complexity versus traditional single turbos.

4. Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT)

Undoubtedly the promising future star in the turbo world, a VGT is often regards as the best of the both world solution, sort of, for the moment.
A VGT is a turbo with controllable internal vanes to regulate the performance of the turbo. These internal vanes within the turbocharger alter the area-to-radius (A/R) ratio to match the RPM. At low RPM, a low A/R ratio is used to increase exhaust gas velocity and quickly spool up the turbocharger. As the revs climb, the A/R ratio increases to allow for increased airflow. The result is low turbo lag, a low boost threshold, and a wide and smooth torque band.

Currently, VGT is popular among diesel engines as current technology made material requirement to be cost effective to manufacturer while not the same cases for petrol engines as petrol exhaust is noticeably hotter (by 500 degree Celsius), where conventional material is out of the picture.

- Requires just a single turbo, simplifying a sequential turbo setup into something more compact.

Disadvantages

- For gasoline applications, cost typically keeps them out as exotic metals have to be used in order to maintain reliability.

5. Variable Twin-Scroll Turbocharger
During SEMA 2015, Borg Warner showcases a concept, where Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained coined as Variable Twin-Scroll Turbocharger.
Basically, it's a twin-scroll turbo with a variable controlled valve that direct flow of exhaust gasses into either scroll or both scroll in various ratio.

Advantages
- Significantly cheaper (in theory) than VGTs, thus making an acceptable case for gasoline turbocharging.
- Allows for a wide, flat torque curve.
- More robust in design versus a VGT, depending on the material selection.

Disadvantages
- Cost and complexity versus using a single turbo or traditional twin-scroll.
- The technology has been played with before (eg: quick spool valve) but doesn’t seem to catch on in the production world. There are likely additional challenges with the technology.

6. Electric Turbochargers

Formula 1, the pinnacle of automotive technology, where innovation is valued over anything else. Since early 2014, Formula 1 cars had started employing the electric turbo setup which should eliminates the nastiest downside of a turbo setup, the infamous turbo lag, where a few second of fake hopes you had given all your N/A buddies if you ever race them down the track.

With a powerful electric motor sandwiched between the turbine and compressor, turbo lag? Gone. Not enough exhaust gases? No problem. Turbo can’t produce low-end torque? Now it can! Perhaps the next phase of modern turbocharging, there are undoubtedly drawbacks of the electric path as well.

- By directly connecting an electric motor to the compressor wheel, turbo lag and insufficient exhaust gases can be virtually eliminated by spinning the compressor with electric power when needed.

- A very wide effective RPM range with even torque throughout.

 Disadvantages
- Cost and complexity, as you now must account for the electric motor and ensure it remains cool to prevent reliability issues. That goes for the added controllers as well.
- Packaging and weight become an issue, especially with the addition of a battery on board, which will be necessary to supply sufficient power to the turbo when needed.
- VGTs or twin-scrolls can offer very similar benefits (though not at quite the same level) for a significantly lower cost.

Long Journey Checklist

Before anything else, let's have some 5 min of fun watching Tim Shaw wrecking a Proton Wira by deliberating running it dry.

So before you jump on your car and tune in your favorite 大地回春 (CNY song) tune, let's give you, your family and most importantly your ride a check for safe and sound trip.

Your Car
First and foremost, if your vehicle is nearly due for a scheduled maintenance, DO IT NOW. Else, it is okay to look around your car by yourself, or ask some one that know a little bit more about cars.

Things to check:
Engine oil
Make sure your car is warm but not hot, and park on a leveled surface. Pop the hood, and locate your engine's dipstick (refer owner manual). Pull the engine oil dipstick out, wipe it with a clean rag or a paper towel and insert it back fully. Pull it out again and check the level - it should be close to the "FULL" mark on the dipstick.

New engine oil is mostly Golden Brown, anything near to Chocolate is a sign of bad engine oil, get it change ASAP!

Transmission fluid
Some car have a transmission fluid dipstick, some do not. CHECK YOUR MANUAL. IF your car have one, check just as you check your engine oil. IF it doesn't, refer to your manual again.

Engine coolant
Locate your radiator overflow tank, where there will be marked "HIGH" and "LOW" on the tank. Your coolant level should be at close to the High side. Coolant should not be totally clear since there is antifreeze mixture added. If it's slightly below Low level, it's okay to add distilled water to top it off. However, if you found out that the coolant level drop constantly, there is a leak in the system and you should send your for a repair!

NOTE: Don't open the radiator cap or the pressurized overflow tank cap when the engine is hot!

Battery
The only way to tell the battery condition is to check the battery condition visually. If you see any acid leaks, cracks or other damage, the battery must be replaced. Make sure the battery terminals are tight and not corroded. Corroded terminals will cause troubles to the circuitry of your car.

If you are using a "water" battery, make sure the fluid content is in between the High and Low.

Do check all other fluid including power steering fluid, brake fluid, screen washer fluid etc. at the same time. Also, visually inspect the car's lighting, wiper and tire pressure. Don't forget your wheel lock key if you had invested a set of wheel lock nuts.

Also, check all of your vehicle's documentation, make sure your vehicle's road tax and insurance is up to date, while bringing a set of photocopies of the latest registration and insurance cover note for any "just in case" situation.

Please do consider the followings:
Emergency gear: Make sure to check your spare tire (or tire sealant kit), stow a set of jumper cables and a jack, and take note of any phone numbers that you might need for roadside assistance. Consider a Emergency Breakdown Service if you aren't already enrolled in one (Consult your vehicle insurance company). Flashlight is also a good choice, especially those baton styled sold in EDC shops that can double as self defense weapon.

First aid kits: A simple one will do, make sure it's fresh. Panadol, Chi Teck Un (the little pill for stomach ache), bandages, ointment for cuts and scrapes and hand sanitizer. Check if anyone in the car is prone to motion sickness, consult your pharmacist. Also, stock some tissue, napkins, or paper towels in your car, especially there will be children travelling along. And yes, bring along a roll of toilet paper is handy. Ladies, check your timetable and bring your pads in extra number. You never knows. Bring along a few plastic bag for the trash too, you will not want to litter all the way back home.

Navigation materials: Be sure to have a working GPS system, or a smartphone with a trip planner (OR IF your are hardcore old school, bring a map and compass). If there are particular cities on your itinerary, city guides and travel books are a good idea as well.

You as the driver:
Plan your trip wisely, avoid rush hour and noon, since there will be lots of traffic and the sun will wear you down quickly. Have a proper meal an hour or so before your trip, avoid eating too much else you may find yourself sleepy when "digestion mode" kick in.

Don't take any performance altering drugs, not even a flu pill since it may induce drowsiness. DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL AT ALL.

Check your driving license valid date, this is the sneaky bastard. Check Touch N Go balance too, do top up before hand to avoid get caught at crowded toll plaza and petrol station.

The followings will help you to ease the stress of long journey:
Music: NOTHING beat a good list of music for EVERYONE in the car. Make everyone to compile a list of their favorite songs and take turn to enjoy different music since continuous of EDM might put your partner into rage mode.

Tech gear: BRING your phone charger, both wall socket and the in car cig port charger. I'LL BET A MILLION DOLLAR that you will need that. If you have a dashcam, make sure it have enough memory. Bring spare battery if you can.

Sun protection: SUNGLASSES. Sunglasses is a need in Malaysia weather, and since you are going to drive continuously under the sun, please do consider to buy one. Ladies, bring a scarf, not only it can help block the sun, it can ensure you stay warm.

Food and drinks: Be sure to pack some snacks like fruit, pretzels, energy bars, and crackers beforehand. Bring a few bottles of water to stay hydrated. Caffeine is always a good short booster, but please do consider stop and rest if the your driving is affected by the drowsiness.

Clothing: OBVIOUSLY, you should wear comfortable clothes for time in the car, NOT THE ONE YOU WANT TO IMPRESS YOUR AH MA. You should also consider bringing along blankets or a sweater in case your hubby/bofie thinks its ok to blast 16 degree air con continuously for 4 hours. They will be handy too if you decided to travel thru the night.

Things to prep your Kids:
Kids are wonderful creation, yet they are "the pain" sometimes. Try bring along your kid when you are planning the trip, the involvement will help bond the family. Ask the kid to help load the car, so that they felt related to the trip. Ensure they are do not eat too much, properly hydrated and beware of any sign of illness (READ: motion sickness). REMEMBER TO BRING ALONG his/her favorite stuff toys.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DIVE WITH YOU AND YOUR KID ONLY, especially your loved one is only nine years old. Your kid may get bored, thus loading the car/ipad with their favorite cartoon is always a good idea. Else, family trivia, heart to heart talk also a good way to bond during the trip.

Please encourage your kid to buckle up in the back seat. If they are not able to hold securely with the seat belts, which means they need a child seat. DO NOT CARRY YOUR NEW BORN in your hand, not even in the back seats. Please bring enough food, liquid, clothing, toiletries for your kid and baby.

Things to do before you are leaving:
Consider to cut the house electricity to reduce fire hazard especially you gonna leave for a long period of time (Only remain power for the essentials, aka alarm system and fridge). Turn off the main water supply too.

Notify your neighbors, neighborhood watch and the residence's security of your absence. Leave more than one contact numbers in case there is an emergency at your living place. Make sure your pet is been taken care off.

Before leaving, ensure all electrical appliance are switched off and unplugged. Make sure all entrance are closed and locked from inside.

Now, you are all ready.

Ford Shutting Operations in Japan & Indonesia

Ford Motor Co. will close down all operations by the end of this year in Japan and Indonesia, where the U.S. automaker says it has no path to boost sales or earn profits.
The step is being taken “after pursuing every possible option,” Karen Hampton, Ford’s Asia Pacific spokeswoman, said in an e-mailed statement. The company will provide ongoing support to customers for service, spare parts and warranties, she said.

“It has become clear that there is no path to sustained profitability, nor will there be an acceptable return over time from our investments in Japan or Indonesia,” Hampton said. “Ford remains committed to serving global markets while aggressively restructuring parts of our business which have no reasonable path to achieve sales growth.”
Ford’s exit from Indonesia follows General Motors Co., which announced last year that it would close down its factory in Southeast Asia’s largest car market. Indonesia is dominated by Toyota Motor Corp. and its affiliate Daihatsu Motor Co.

There is an accident involving a motor bike hitting a truck, which the biker is an illegal immigrant from Indonesia with no permit to stay in the country and the bike doen't have valid road tax and insurance. After the accident, the biker passed away in the ER at Hospital Selayang.

The lorry driver proceed to make police report, and since the biker is an illegal immigrant, his next of kin did not report. The driver did leave his number and company phone number to a male, self claim as the biker's brother, also an illegal immigrant. However, weeks and months later, no body calls, not even police had called.

By the third month, the company had decided to consult a lawyer. According to lawyer, there is nothing to do since the biker is an illegal immigrant and have no legal status in Malaysia. Nothing had to be worried.

After a year and three months, a police office, rank corporal call and visited the driver.

At first he claimed that he is the Investigation Officer of this case, and had just received this case. He proceed to ask question regarding the accident, like when and where, how the accident occurred and how he deal with the biker's family etc.

A week later, the police office revisited the driver, and claimed that this is some serious accident since it involve death. He also claim that even tho the biker is illegal immigrant, the police department still can re-open the case and bring it to court. The police officer also claim that if that happens, the driver's license and GDL will be suspended for the time being, until court settle the case.

Then, the tone of the conversation changes.

The police officer offers to help, claiming he can alter the police report and make some amendment regarding his statement, so that he is "bulletproof". This help require the driver to pay RM1500 within two week time.

Before the police officer leaves, he gave the driver his number. The driver asked, whether he is get summoned. The police officer said that he is not in charge of that.

According to the driver, the police arrived in a police vehicle, with his deep blue uniform. His ranks is Corporal according to his shoulder ranks. He did not reveal his name, and the driver missed both the name badge and ID badge due to panic.

There is a ABC S/B company that is operational trading company with GST registered.

ALL of ABC S/B sales are zero rated item

MOST (90% and up) of ABC S/B's supplies are zero rate supplies, too.

Traditionally, ABC S/B does their accounting via hand and book.
It is out of their capability to do the computerized accounts on their own thus they seek an accounting firm that able to do so.

The accounting firm charge ABC S/B RM2000 per month.

After some calculations, ABC S/B find out that the input tax claimed monthly is less that RM500, making the out sourcing option itself is a burden to the company.

Can ABC S/B choose not to submit their accounts to Royal Custom and thereby forfeiting their input tax claims?

Here is the background.

My friend's mum is planning to go to work in singapore for a few years (min 2 i guess)
She had a saving around 10k, planning to leave it her daughter so that in case anything happens, (i.e hospitalization etc) my friend can use the fund to settle the problem.

The problem is, the saving is deposited in a JOINT ACCOUNT that all withdrawal need BOTH SIGNATURE.

The mum wanted to put a limit on her daughter so that she cannot simply spend the saving, so she intended to maintain the account status.

The problem is, since the mum is away, can she submit a Power of Attorney for someone she entrusted to sign on behalf of her during her absence?
