So, Ayam today go to grocery as usual, they checked my vaccine status.

Ayam belum vaccine 14 day’s tho, I think they didn’t notice that and just let me in cos I received my two dose.

I mean, Ayam always been able to enter even without vaccine just for grocery lol. Now enter grocer also need double vaccine+14 days ka ?

Edit : I have to clarify, I was checked for my 2 vaccine dosage to enter the mall. Which is my local grocer. I was just surprised, well, I was let in anyways. But it got me thinking why would they check since it’s connected with essentials

I work in the marketing team in a reputable company. I went to a good school and was brought up in a healthy environment.

All my life, I’ve never had an issue with the police, until November 2020, when the worst experience of my life happened to me.

It all started with this favour I did for an acquaintance.

My acquaintance had moved abroad for a few months for work purposes but didn’t have the time to move out of the house he rented in KL.

After months of the house being unoccupied, he asked me to help him pack all his things and move them to another place so that he could stop renting. I agreed to help him out.

I went to his apartment with my assistant to remove all of his things, but I had trouble entering because I had issues with the access card.

The guard saw me struggling and came to help me. He told me the chip in the card was duplicated and sent me over to the management to resolve it.

I went to the management office, gave them my IC and told them why I was there. They understood my predicament and let me in.

I went to the house, packed everything and sent it to his office.

I thought that was it, but after a few days, I received a call.
It was the house agent.

He asked me how I entered the unit, and I told him about the access card, and how the management smoothed things over. Then he dropped a bomb on me:

“The tenant owes the landlord RM58k.”

I was shocked. I called my acquaintance to ask him what was going on. Why hadn’t he paid the rent? I asked. He told me it was news to him too.

He explained to me that the contract of the house was under his company’s name and that his company was the one who usually settled the rent. That’s why he had no clue about it. His reasoning made sense to me, so I had no reason to suspect anything.

My acquaintance reassured me that it would be okay, and said, “Return the key to the apartment’s concierge, and I will sort out the matter.”

I agreed to drop the key off, but the day I went to drop off the key, it was just my bad luck to bump into the owner of the unit. He got so mad at me and started bombarding me with questions and accusations, threatening to make a police report about this.

I responded, “Well if your tenant does not pay, you should do that. You have the right.”

The landlord took my number down and told me he was going to lawyer up. However, he didn’t follow up on this, so I started to get worried.

I called the landlord back and told him, “You have every right to make a police report, but I’m just calling to tell you I had nothing to do with it. I am just a scapegoat that got in between.”

I expressed to him my worries about getting unnecessarily involved, but then he told me that he had already made a police report, and there was nothing else he could do.

After that call, I didn’t hear anything from him. I spent the rest of the week feeling extremely uneasy.

I had just come back from the gym and was settling in when I heard the doorbell ring.

At first, I did not want to open the door because it was at night. Who would come over that late? Then I saw it was a group of policemen.

They showed me the papers of their identity through the grille. I knew it was about my acquaintance’s apartment.

They said they wanted to see the items that I took from my acquaintance’s apartment. I told them, it wasn’t with me because everything was at the place my acquaintance told me to send.

They then asked for my IC and asked me to drive to the police station for further questioning, with a policewoman accompanying me. I wasn’t given an arrest warrant. I was simply told verbally to accompany them.

I reached the station around midnight, parked and got out. I was ushered into an office by a policeman who addressed the occupant as “Sergeant”. From the moment I entered the office, this sergeant addressed me rudely.

He took one look at me and asked, “You tak ngerti bahasa ah, you pergi ke tak pergi?” (“Don’t you understand Bahasa Melayu? Did you go or not?”) He was referring to whether or not I went to my acquaintance’s house.

I just thought to myself, “Can he calm down? I just got here and I have no idea what is happening.”

Luckily, they let me call my brother and cousin to tell them what was happening and to come to the police station.

Immediately after, he confiscated my phone, citing it as ‘evidence’ because I had sent videos of my acquaintance’s things to him.

Then he told me I was going to be remanded in police custody for “stealing blankets from the owner.”

His words did not sink in me yet. I was still clueless about what was going on. When my brother and cousin arrived, the police told them to take all my jewellery, my shoes and my other belongings from me.

That was when reality hit me.

I realised that I was to be placed in the lockup.

At 1 AM, they sent me down to the lokap (police custody)
Initially, I thought it was going to be like how they do it in the movies: You just sit on the cemented bench wearing your normal clothes but it was not like that at all.

I was put in a holding cell with a lady that was just lying down on the floor. It was an empty cell with nothing in it — no chairs, benches, or beds. They told me to sit on the floor, like her.

I was disgusted because the floors were so dirty. I didn’t even have my shoes on. I tried to squat instead, but after an hour my legs gave up, and I had to sit.

The whole time, I looked at the other lady and wondered, “How can this lady just lay down on the floor with no worries, especially during a pandemic?”

After a while, they called me to another room and told me I needed to remove my bra and change my clothes to a purple shirt and pants.

Some of the others wore orange and some wore purple. I learnt from them that purple meant remand prisoner and orange was for lockup detainees.

There were some variations in the uniforms. Some had long sleeves, some had short sleeves, some people’s pants were long and some were short, like mine. I am not sure if they gave out the uniforms at random or followed a specific order.

My pants were too short for me but I wasn’t bothered by that, so I just followed the policewomen to the custody cell.

Along the way to the women’s custody cell, I had to pass by the men’s cells.

Their cells were the worst. It was dirtier and smellier. Some of the cells even had 20 people inside, when they looked like they would only fit 10.

As I was entering, a guy was singing a song at the top of his lungs. Some of the police looked agitated, with about 4-5 of them staring darkly at the man.

One of the policemen pulled this long piece of rubber hose and threatened to hit him, but another stopped him and said, “Takyah layan.” (“Don’t entertain him.”)

As the guy kept singing, the policemen got more and more annoyed and started cursing at him and insulting him.

The guy started to climb the railings, then he took off his shirt and tied it up there so that he was shirtless.

By this time, he held everyone’s attention. I heard one of the policemen whisper to the other, “His shirt is already up there, just leave him alone.”

I believe they only left him alone because he was shirtless and the bruises would be shown. His cell was at the entrance, so it would be visible to anyone who walked in.

They put me in a small cell with two other girls
I was in the cell with the same lady before and another young Chinese girl.

The cemented floor was so sticky and dirty. There were cockroaches everywhere and I was barefoot the whole time, so it was extremely disgusting.

The toilet bowl was inside the cell, with just an open pipe above it for us to shower. It was very open and each cell had a CCTV so anyone could see you shower or use the toilet.

I didn’t know how to survive in this environment. I thought I might get a disease before I could even go home.

Never in my life have I had to shower and use the toilet when everyone could see me, but I had to convince myself it was not a big deal.

Again, I tried squatting for a while, but eventually, my legs gave up. I just sat down, leaned on the wall, and tried to digest what was happening.

After a while, I stopped being able to piece together a train of thought.

The only thing I could think was, “What is the time?” They didn’t show or tell us anything. But I did not say anything to them and kept mostly to myself. I was afraid of being singled out for disruptive behaviour.

The next morning, I had to go to the magistrate court that is just in the police station. I did not have a lawyer yet so I had to go alone. In the court, they ordered 4 days of remand period. When day 4 arrived, they added 2 more days for me as investigations were still underway.

I was dejected. I just wanted to go home.

The next morning, they gave us breakfast. It was bread with a small plastic of brown liquid, and it was disgusting. I don’t know if the liquid was supposed to be coffee or tea but it had no taste.

But the worst part is, you only get water when you have your meals, and it’s always in a small plastic bag. It was so hard to get water, you are just always dehydrated.

The other unsanitary thing was that in all 6 of the days I was in there, they didn’t let us change or wash our clothes or underwear.

I had to wear the same uniform without washing it for the whole 6 days. If we were to wash our clothes, we’d have to be naked for a few hours while they dry.

It got to the point that I had to lie that I was on my period, just so that I could wear a sanitary pad to feel less dirty. However, it was always so hard to even get their attention to ask for it. And you can only ask for one per day.

Luckily, I was allowed to go upstairs to the investigation office where my family would be, and they would bring pads for me.

But it made me think, what if someone was on their period and needed pads? What if their cases aren’t being investigated? How are the girls going to be there?

After 2 days of being in the custody cell, they took my swab test before being sent to the quarantine cell.

On the 3rd night, they moved me to a quarantine cell alongside my cellmate and another lady. It was more isolated than the other cell.

After I moved to the quarantine cell, I would be woken up by a man screaming. It was always the same man at night, but throughout the day, there would be random screams. The screams in the day sounded different each time, so I am assuming it was different people.

I don’t know what cells were on the upper floors, or what was happening, but every night since the 3rd night, you could hear the sounds of railings opening, followed by loud footsteps.

When you hear that, you know there are going to be wailings after. They hit them so hard, I could hear the beatings very clearly, as if it was happening right next to me.

Nowadays, when I see vertical stripes or just see railings, I start shaking. Sometimes when I watch shows on Netflix, and they just pull the rail open, my palms start sweating and I start shaking.

It reminds me of the screams that I heard every night in the custody cell.

The behaviour of the investigation officers and the behaviour of the police in charge of custody were very different.

The way the custody police spoke to me felt very inhumane, as if I didn’t matter.

To them, I wanted to say: “You don’t know if we are guilty or not.”

In front of my cell, there was a small surveillance room for the police but besides that, in one small corner is a CCTV blind spot.

At night, the police would bring all the things the “VIP” prisoners’ contacts had given, like food, drinks and cigarettes, and pool them together in that blind spot.

They would bring these prisoners to the blind spot, take some of the food or cigarettes for themselves and give the others to the VIP prisoners.

The men from the lockup would join the policemen, and they’d just be eating, smoking and laughing together like it was a get-together party.

One of my cellmates, the Chinese girl, had this privilege. I could not talk to her much because she only spoke Mandarin, but I could understand her saying something along the lines of her getting arrested because of an illegal online casino.

She also said how her boss is rich and how he could find a way to get her food.

I wanted to say: “If you want to be fair and say everyone gets treated equally despite their crime, why are some prisoners treated better and some treated worse?”

I have asked the investigation office about the different treatment we receive, but all they do is nod their head and move on to the next topic like it was normal.

My experience showed me the truth about police
In the end, my acquaintance settled the payments and the landlord withdrew the cases, so I could get out.

The truth is, I couldn’t show any documentation of my innocence because it was all phone calls with my acquaintance, which made my case worse.

When I was released, I only got a receipt for items that the police took, which was terrible, because I had no idea previously that I needed all that documentation to claim them back.

My claims form that i received from them is the only proof i have to show that this happened.

I didn’t have a lawyer to advise me on the proper procedure in dealing with the police.

But after that experience, I have learned firsthand how some police act when society is not around.

Nowadays, I feel safer when the police are not around v.s. when they are.
I have tried not to come across the police since even if they are roadblocks. Even though I have the documents to travel when they closed off inter-district travelling, I always use Waze to get a route that has no police.

To me, I feel their mindset is: “If I say you did it, you did it. You cannot say anything to defend yourself, even if it was not your fault.”

I just don’t want to see them. If I do, I might just run in the opposite direction, even though I did nothing wrong.

Running doesn’t mean I’m automatically guilty. It just means I’m afraid of the police because of what they do in the lockup.

It makes me nervous just thinking about seeing them.

The system needs to change. People say, “There’s always one or two bad apples.” But it’s not just one or two.

If it was, when a police officer sees another officer treating a person badly, they would speak up. But they don’t. They just act like it’s the norm for them.

People need to voice out more.

The police in custody have no right to beat them up because they are not criminals yet. And even if they are, that is the point of going through court and having a judge give you a sentence.

The police do not decide what your punishment should be. That is not how the system works.

I believe there are still a few good police out there, and they should speak up about this issue more.
They’re our only hope to make a change because it’s not fair how people are being treated in the lockup right now.

Minister of Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing assured local employers that Singapore’s economic agencies are working to provide temporary accommodation in Singapore for their Malaysian workers who may wish to stay here during Malaysia’s lockdown.

In a doorstop interview with media on Tuesday (Mar. 17) morning,

Malaysia had previously announced lockdown measures a day earlier, on Mar. 16, 2020.

The lockdown will take place on Wednesday (Mar. 18) and last until the end of the month (Mar. 31).

As part of the measures, all tourists and foreign visitors coming into Malaysia are barred from entry, and Malaysians are also barred from travelling abroad.

According to National Development Minister Lawrence Wong in a press conference on Sunday (Mar. 15), he noted that 300,000 people move across the land crossings at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints alone on a daily basis.

According to Chan,

Chan responded that the economic agencies are working with the companies, dormitory operators and hotels to provide accommodation options for such workers.

He also mentioned that companies who need help for their workers’ accommodation can contact and work with said economic agencies and their own trade associations.

“Let me address the issue of the Malaysian workers. Since last night, many employers are enquiring if they can provide temporary accommodation in Singapore for their Malaysian workers who may wish to stay here during this period. and also work with their trade associations.”

Chan had previously mentioned in a Facebook post last night (Mar. 16) that businesses that employ Malaysian workers who commute between Singapore and Malaysia daily may have to activate their Business Continuity Plans, but assured that economic agencies are ready to assist if need be.

Chan assured Singaporeans that he was aware that many of these new restrictions and announcements may be quite overwhelming for many people.

Hence, he asked for their “continued trust and support as we work hard with all stakeholders to ensure that we get through these short-term challenges together”.
