Changing Department within Company

Hi, this is my current situation. So, now I'm working in a company which can be considered as quite big (with branches around Malaysia and Singapore). I come from engineering background and currently my jobscope mostly involves sales with little technical stuffs.

So, currently my company has an opening in another department which the jobscope involves proposal design and involve drawings and technical stuffs. I am actually keen to change to this department as I can learn more stuffs.

The question is, is it advisable to request to the HR to change my position to another department ? What if I requested and they rejected it, will it affect my reputation in the company ?

Thanks.
