Sabah bars serial rapist Selva Kumar Subbiah from entering state

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has barred convicted serial rapist, Selva Kumar Subbiah, from entering the state.

The directive to the State Immigration Department is to be enforced immediately, as Selva is considered a high risk individual.

In a statement, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said Selva is not welcome in Sabah because he could potentially pose a danger to the public, especially women and children.

"We just cannot take the risk of having such a potentially dangerous individual on the loose. We must protect our citizens," he said.

Selva, who is suspected of sexually assaulting some 1,000 women, has been deported from Canada, after serving a 24-year jail term there.

He was expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur from Toronto at 7.45am today.

In 1992, Selva was convicted of 19 counts of sexual assault, 28 counts of administering drug or noxious substances, 10 counts of various assaults and a dozen other charges.

He was charged with assaulting 30 women in Toronto and had assumed various identities, including that of a modelling agent, movie talent scout, professional dancer, lawyer and diplomat.

He is said to have drugged women with drinks, before undressing and raping his unconscious victims and then taking photos of their nude bodies.

"KUALA LUMPUR: Installing seatbelts in express buses should be enforced to reduce the risk of death in road accidents.
Road Transport Department (RTD) director Datuk Seri Nadzri Siron said, however, that the move requires detailed study.

"I welcome the suggestion that the use of seatbelts be enforced in express buses, as it is among the best measures to reduce loss of life.
"I will discuss this within the RTD, as seatbelts in the passenger seats of express buses will improve the safety system of these buses," he told Bernama yesterday.
Nadzri was commenting on a news analysis on bus accidents, written by Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang yesterday, saying that there should be preventive measures, such as disallowing drivers from making trips during the 'sleepy hours', and making seatbelts for passengers compulsory.
However, Nadzri said, although the government has not yet made passenger seatbelts compulsory, bus operators could take the initiative of providing them for the public.
In the incident early Saturday, 14 people died while 16 more were injured when the express bus they were travelling in plunged into a ditch and crashed into the concrete wall of an underpass at Km137.3 of the North-South Expressway, near Kampung Jayor and the Pagoh R&R area.
Asked about disallowing express bus drivers from making trips during overnight hours, Nadzri said this has been brought up before for discussion, but could not be implemented because of the demand from the industry and public.
"However, we will review it, because disallowing express buses from travelling at night and the wee hours could help reduce the risk of accidents," he said. --BERNAMA

"TAIPING, Dec 24 — For 36 years, an octogenarian here has been going around the heritage city to look for potholes.

Tey Seng Huay, 86, has made it a personal mission to patch up potholes following a minor accident in Aulong.

“Whenever I see a pothole, I get very uneasy. I want to fill it up to ensure other motorists do not suffer the same fate as me,” said the former kiln worker.

Speaking to Malay Mail when met at his home at Kampung Boyan Baru here recently, the father of eight said he would go around the city daily to check the roads.

“Once I find a pothole, I will look for bricks from nearby dumpsites and use them to patch it up.”

In his trusty white car, Tey carries with him tools such as a hammer and baskets.

For big jobs, Tey brings along a wheel barrow too.

Tey said in his years of repairing potholes, most of it were located in Aulong.

“Just yesterday I repaired four potholes in that area.”

Tey said his children had advised him to stop his community work.

“But I remain steadfast. I will continue repairing potholes till my last breath,” he said, adding that the task is a part of his exercise regime.

“Whenever I repair a hole, I need to squat. It helps to loosen my joints.”

"PETALING JAYA, Dec 22 — Shocking revelations have emerged following the recent arrest of seven Islamic State (IS) militants — four foreigners — in raids nationwide.

They include:
• A European, who was arrested in Yemen in 2010 for links with al-Qaeda, entered the country legally as his name was not blacklisted by Interpol.
• Religious authorities are well aware of deviant teachings at Al-Madinah International University (Mediu).
• Public Service Department had barred graduates from joining the civil service.
• Police sources say son of a ranking official at the university is an IS militant.
• Selangor palace had instructed authorities to monitor the university.

Bukit Aman counter terrorism division senior principal assistant director Datuk Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay said the European was arrested by authorities in Yemen, but not charged for the offence.

“As such, he managed to enter Malaysia as there were no records of him in Interpol’s database,” he said.

“The suspect’s arrival, however, was detected by police. We arrested him over his links with IS and deported him to his country of origin along with two other suspected militants on Nov 22 and 23.”

The two other foreigners were Mediu students who had planned to attack an international school in Kuala Lumpur.

The university had hogged the spotlight as the syllabus, specifically the Aqidah subject in its Islamic Studies course, had apparently promoted extremism.

“Certain topics were related to militant ideologies. The university has been advised to alter their syllabus and teachings, but we found some of it remained the same ... even after assuring us they would make amendments,” he said.

Ayub said the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Jais), Selangor Mufti Department and Higher Education Ministry were investigating the university’s syllabus.

It is learnt the ministry and the religious authorities were scheduled to meet representatives from the university today.

Police sources later revealed the son of a ranking official at the institution was “an IS sympathiser”.

“The son is also believed to be an active IS militant and had visited Malaysia before. He is believed to be in Syria at this point of time,” said a source in the thick of investigations.

Authorities had red flagged the university in the past following the deviant teachings.
Jais confirmed they were investigating the extreme elements of Wahhabism taught at the university.

A Public Service Department source said the university, established in 2006, had a “history of inconsistent religious teachings and extremist doctrine”.

“We refused to recognise their graduates since 2014 over security concerns,” said the source.

“There have been evidence of extremist teachings ... it is unacceptable to have such people as civil servants.”

He said the Selangor palace had told the authorities to monitor the university. This was confirmed by another source close to the palace."

Singapore convicted a third private banker on Wednesday in connection with the international money-laundering scandal involving state fund 1MDB in neighbouring Malaysia.
Yeo Jiawei, a Singaporean former wealth manager with Swiss bank BSI, was convicted after a 12-day trial of witness-tampering and obstructing the city-state's 1MDB-linked investigations. He will be sentenced on Thursday.

"I find the accused to be inconsistent and an unreliable witness," said Judge Ng Peng Hong in delivering his verdict.
Yeo, 33, is also charged with money-laundering, cheating and forgery but will be tried next year on those counts.
Allegations that huge sums were misappropriated from the Malaysian state fund through money-laundering have triggered a massive corruption scandal which has embroiled Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Singapore, a regional financial hub known for its transparency and strong stance against corruption, last year launched a probe into alleged unlawful fund flows linked to 1MDB.
BSI and another Swiss bank, Falcon, were kicked out of the city-state this year for what regulators called massive lapses in financial controls. Swiss banks were allegedly used to transfer illicit funds.
Two other former private bankers from BSI have also been jailed in Singapore for fraud in connection with the case.
It was revealed during Yeo's trial that he worked closely with Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, a family friend of Najib.
Najib founded the 1MDB fund while Low helped set it up and played a key role in its decisions. Both men have strongly denied any wrongdoing.
Singapore prosecutors had said that Yeo "played a central role in many activities connected with the money-laundering case".
Local authorities have seized nearly $180 million in assets, with half linked to Low.
