"Di sini (Mara Digital Mall), kamu boleh sewa sewa tiga lot yang lebih besar hanya RM2,800 sebulan," kata Shahrul, yang telah menjual komputer riba di Low Yat sembilan tahun lalu sebelum datang ke Mara Digital Mall.

Shahrul kini menikmati pendapatan yang lebih baik di pusat membeli-belah baru itu.

Beliau menghargai langkah Mara Digital Mall mengetepikan sewa selama setengah tahun yang pertama dan ia melegakan beliau daripada masalah aliran tunai.

"Sambutan raya saya tahun ini lebih baik kerana saya mampu membawa keluarga bercuti," kata Shahrul, yang berasal dari Kuala Pilah.

Bersetuju dengan Shahrul, seorang lagi peniaga yang mahu dikenali sebagai Ahmad berkata, walaupun terpaksa membayar sewa, beliau yakin masih mendapat keuntungan.

Ahmad, 25, yang memiliki sebuah kedai telefon bimbit berkata sewa di Mara Digital Mall adalah lebih rendah iaitu separuh daripada Plaza Low Yat dengan saiz lot kedai yang sama.

"Sewa di Mara Digital Mall di bawah RM10,000, manakala sewa di Low Yat adalah RM20,000," katanya.

Ahmad, yang sebelum ini menjual alatan telefon bimbit di Plaza Low Yat berkata sewa itu tidak akan menjejaskan perniagaannya.

"Perniagaan saya boleh cover (kos). Selepas saya bayar gaji dan sewa, saya masih boleh untung. Tak ada masalah," katanya.

Penang DAP exco dares all BN reps to declare asset

GEORGE TOWN, March 24 ― DAP’s Jagdeep Singh Deo today challenged all elected representatives from Barisan Nasional (BN) to publicly declare their assets within the next 48 hours.

The Penang state executive councillor said since the representatives saw fit to cause such a commotion over Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s purchase of his house, they should be willing to tell the public what they do with their money.

“I am making this challenge because of the situation and controversy on his purchase of the bungalow,” he told a brief press conference at his office today.

Jagdeep, who is Penang DAP deputy chairman, pointed out that all Pakatan Harapan representatives in Penang and Selangor have publicly declared their assets and have also had their declarations verified by independent auditors.

“So I want to challenge BN to come forward and declare their assets and be scrutinised to see if their assets are beyond their means,” he said.

He recalled that in November 2013, Lim had urged Penang’s Umno assemblymen to declare their arrests and said the state would even bear the cost.

But the offer was not taken up, Jagdeep said.

On the recent point raised that all BN federal lawmakers have declared their assets to the prime minister, the Penang DAP man said this was a pointless exercise as it was still kept hidden from the public.

“We want public declarations of their assets so that the public can scrutinise it,” he said.

Over the past week, several reports have been lodged against Lim accusing him of corruption over his RM2.8 million purchase of a house, which has also been linked to the sale of state land back in 2012.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is currently investigating the case.

Damansara Utama assemblyperson Yeo Bee Yin and Canning assemblyperson Wong Kah Woh, both candidates for the post of Youth chief in the coming DAP elections, will face off in a debate on Friday.

DAP deputy publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching, who made the announcement in a statement today, said this would be a first in the party's election history.

"I am glad to announce that (DAP organ) The Rocket will be organising a debate between two DAP Youth chief candidates at the DAP headquarters on Jalan Yew in Kuala Lumpur at 8pm on Nov 20 (this Friday)," Teo said.

She said the debate was to promote a healthy election culture and allow competition and ideas besides helping delegates to get a clear idea of what the political views and plans of the two candidates are.

"The debate will be open to all DAP members and also to members of the public," she added.

However, Teo said attendees need to have a copy of The Rocket as an "entrance ticket" and the newspaper will be sold during the function.

The debate takes place just two days before the party’s Youth wing election on Sunday.

Perak state assembly Speaker Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany turned giant killer to defeat youth and sports deputy minister Datuk M. Saravanan to become the new MIC deputy president with a slim majority.

Devamany polled 698 votes against Saravanan's 681 votes, the Star Online reported.

Many had expected Saravanan, the incumbent vice-president, to win with a comfortable margin due to his position in the government and influence among the grassroots.

Former MIC treasurer-general Datuk Jaspal Singh and former party youth chiefs Datuk T. Mohan and Datuk S.A. Vigneswaran were elected vice-presidents in a four-cornered fight.
The other contender was former party information chief Datuk V.S. Mogan.

The party polls also saw 44 people vying for 23 central working committee positions.

In an immediate reaction, Saravanan said he respected the delegates' decision to elect Devamany.

The results were announced at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang before some 1,500 delegates this afternoon.

The polls were conducted in an orderly manner and no untoward incidents were reported.

Security was tight with police personnel monitoring the situation closely.

Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak officiated the party's 67th annual general meeting.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam was elected unopposed when nominations closed on August 21.

Earlier, C. Sivarraajh and M. Mohana retained their positions unopposed as youth and women chiefs respectively.

The Registrar of Societies (RoS) had directed the party leadership to hold fresh elections after revoking the results in the November 2013 polls due to complaints of fraud.

Former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel had instituted legal action against RoS but the Federal Court last month held that the decision to order for fresh polls was correct.

Palanivel also lost his membership for going to court without CWC's approval. – November 6, 2015.

"He should apologise immediately, who is he to 'melempang' the Chinese?" he said.

A turf war for the underworld’s ‘Heavenly King’ throne seems to be imminent after another attempt on the life of a prominent Datuk Seri proved futile once again recently.

The 57-year-old businessman reportedly one of the underworld’s ‘Four Heavenly Kings’ escaped with minor injuries after unidentified gunmen rained his luxury Toyota with more than 10 shots.

He escaped with minor cuts and bruises as his vehicle was reportedly fitted with reinforced shatter proof windscreens.

Soon after the incident earlier this month, the Datuk Seri was said to have left the city, and returned in recent days.

Coincidentally this was the second reported attempt on the Datuk Seri’s life in recent years. Two years ago, an explosive devise fitted beneath the Datuk Seri’s Jaguar was triggered while he was travelling in Cheras.

The explosion ripped the rear section of the car, but both the businessman and his driver escaped unhurt.

As in the earlier attempt, a police report into the shooting was lodged and investigations are underway but police remain tight-lipped over both the incidents.

And, investigators are now probing if this case was linked to last October’s grenade attack on another underworld kingpin outside a nightclub in Sun Complez off Jalan Bukit Bintang.

“Both individuals are known to one another, as they had forged links for some time now,” one source told The Rakyat Post.

So, the source explained, its begs the question as to why would three attempts be made on two prominent individuals with very strong ties to the underworld in three consecutive years.

Checks revealed both individuals have a stronghold over the underwolrd’s lucrative gaming, vice, and entertainment industry.

Besides this, both the kingpins have numerous reports lodged against them over the years, and police have detained them under the Emergency Ordinance.

Apart from two categories, Khairy also announced that a second and third place winner would be crowned, with a prize of RM7,500 and RM5,000 respectively that would be sponsored by his ministry.

“I hope we can go back on the message of National Sports Day and purpose of doing this that is to promote a sporting country.

“Thank you to all the MPs here. We disagree on many things, so very little we can agree on these days especially in Parliament, but I would like to say, and I hope today is proof of this, that sports can bring us together.

PETALING JAYA: Allegations on 1MDB ranging from Terengganu oil almost being used as collateral and Tabung Haji deposits used as a bailout to claims that investment returns went into controversial businessman Jho Low’s accounts have all been answered.

A book titled Siapa Kata Tidak Dijawab (Who Says It’s Unanswered), in explaining the Terengganu issue, said that in 2009, discussions between the federal and state governments were held over the issue of contribution of each party to Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA) where the initial plan was for it to have a paid-up capital of RM11bil.

Among the plans was for the Government to guarantee the raising of sukuk worth RM5bil by TIA but the state government eventually decided to pull out of the deal.

“In September 2009, TIA became a federal agency and was renamed 1MDB. Therefore, there is no issue of 1MDB trying to use the state’s oil and gas as collateral,” it said.

The book also explained that the purchase of land by Tabung Haji was not a bailout, pointing out that discussions to buy a plot of land at Tun Razak Exchange went on as early as 2013 and that Tabung Haji was interested as the company wanted to be involved in the development of an international financial hub.

It clarified that Tabung Haji did not buy the lot to develop “Signature Tower” but had bought a lot – at a discounted price of RM2,860 per sq foot and located at a prime area in TRX – to develop some serviced apartments.

In the book, it was also denied that any money from 1MDB had gone into Low’s accounts or that of any third party, after PetroSaudi returned US$2.318bil to the company which comprised initial investment of US$1.83bil and US$488mil in revenue.

“1MDB received a short-term loan of RM950mil from the Government in March. This was needed while waiting for asset monetisation to be done,” it said on why the company needed government help.

On why it needed a rationalisation plan, it was explained in the book that this was important to drastically reduce 1MDB’s debts and to ensure its business plans in the energy and real estate sectors could proceed.

Under the rationalisation plan, the company will merge its activities, increase corporate administration and monetise its assets to reduce debts.

“To date, the plan has shown success where the company’s debts had been reduced by RM3.6bil. A deal with International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), our Abu Dhabi-based partner, will reduce another RM16bil from the debts,” it said.

On the development of TRX, a joint venture with Australian company Lend Lease was signed in March to develop 6.8ha of land and Indonesia’s Mulia Group had purchased land to build “Signature Tower” at RM665mil, while for Bandar Malaysia, 1MDB received proposals from over 40 local and international companies and an independent consultant was appointed to conduct a feasibility study for plots of land in Air Itam in Penang and Pulau Indah in Klang.

The book said that although 1MDB was facing challenges, concrete steps had been taken to ensure that the company achieved its objectives, settled its debts and the Government and people benefited from programmes outlined by it.
