Manchester, United Kingdom

Manchester's forward-thinking attitude doesn't end with the warm welcome it offers LGBTQ+ travellers, either. Take time to discover how the city has blended history and modernity at the Science and Industry Museum, then consider calling it a night at the imposing Victorian-era Kimpton Clocktower.

San Francisco, United States

Home to one of the United States' largest LGBTQ+ populations and often termed the gay capital of the world, San Francisco is steeped in history, particularly that of the American LGBTQ+ rights movement. Indeed, it was here that the rainbow flag was first flown during the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade in 1978.

These days, the Castro District is still the heart of LGBTQ+ life in San Francisco. Stop by the GLBT History Museum for a crash course in the struggle for LGBTQ+ equality in the city and the United States as a whole, then grab a drink at the Twin Peaks Tavern, the country’s first gay bar where windows meant customers no longer had to hide themselves away from the outside world.

And if you're in town for San Francisco's Pride celebrations in late June, look out for the pink triangle hung from the Twin Peaks hills above the city – originally dreamed up a quarter of a century ago as a way to make Pride visible right across San Francisco. There’s a similarly arty flair at citizenM San Francisco Union Square – it’s the perfect spot for you to fall into a deep slumber after all that exploring.

Sydney, Australia

Sydney is one of the most welcoming cities for LGBTQ+ travellers in not only Australia but the world. Particularly if you head down under during the early March Mardi Gras spectacular – which has been taking place in Sydney since 1978 – a colourful, fun-loving and open-minded vibe takes over the place.

In the Darlinghurst area, Oxford Street began establishing itself as the beating heart of Sydney’s LGBTQ+ scene as far back as the mid-20th century, and the neighbourhood is still packed with cafés, restaurants, cocktail bars and nightclubs today. Once you’ve partied your way into the night, treat yourself to celebrity treatment and harbour views at five-star The Darling at The Star, just a 15-minute drive from the airport.

Toronto, Canada

Home to the early-2000s drama, Queer as Folk, Toronto is Canada’s diverse, open-minded LGBTQ+ capital. It’s home to the country’s largest population of LGBTQ+ residents, has a rich history of Pride activism that dates back to the 1970s – and boasts not just one but arguably three distinct centres to the LGBTQ+ scene: Church and Wellesley, Queen West and Cabbagetown (said to have originally earned its name for the cabbages new arrivals from Ireland planted in their front gardens).

Highlights of the main Church and Wellesley neighbourhood include Woody's (in business for over three decades) and North America's longest-operating LGBTQ+ bookshop, Glad Day. Late June is the ideal time to visit Toronto, not only for the pleasant summer temperatures but also to catch its month-long Pride, which culminates in a large-scale parade and festival weekend. Closer to Queen West, consider staying at the imposing Gladstone House, with its mix of playful, exposed-brick bedrooms and restored classic features like the statement old-fashioned glass elevator.

KOTA KINABALU: For the past month, children and folks of a rural village some 200km from Sabah’s capital have been risking their lives crossing a river to go to school or run errands.

On a daily basis, students and villagers of Kampung Nangkawangan in Nabawan have either had to cross the river with makeshift rafts or use a zip line because of the lack of proper infrastructure.

The suspension bridge which the villagers once used was washed away in a massive flood last month.

Recent flooding in the area also destroyed a concrete bridge connecting nearby villages in Nabawan to the main road, leaving teachers returning from the city after the school holidays to walk 18 hours to reach schools there.

For villagers and students from Kampung Nangkawangan, there is no alternative. The suspension bridge was their only means of crossing the river.

Village spokesman Zazila Roslan, 30, told FMT that their situation was “distressing”.

She said she was told that federal deputy works minister Arthur Joseph Kurup, who is also the MP for the area, had gone down to the ground and promised to help, including providing boats while a new bridge was being constructed.

However, the villages have yet to receive the boats, forcing them to use makeshift rafts to cross the river.

When the water levels rise or when currents are strong, they use a zip line.

Smaller children are placed in a sawn-off oil barrel attached to the zip line. Videos of the children crossing the river have gone viral.

“It may feel like it’s fun to cross the river on a zip line but it is dangerous, especially for children, without the proper safety precautions,” Zazila said.

“But they are so eager to learn that they have to go through all this. Going on a raft, zip line. Where are the boats?”

She hopes the authorities do not wait for anything untoward to happen before taking action.

When contacted, Kurup said he has met Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on the matter and obtained approval for emergency funds to resolve the issue.

“The technical officers from the Implementation Coordination Unit and the district office visited the location two days ago and have started doing the necessary reports.

“In the meantime, I will discuss with the local community on what we can do to help with the transportation of schoolchildren in a safe manner for them to attend school.”

Hi /k,

It is nice to be back at hometown after that bodoh and pointless lockdown even though various expert advice against it. My hometown, Sandakan's air is much cleaner and breathe able compare to toxic and carbon polluted air at kl. Such serenity to be living here.

Dua ahli kumpulan Abu Sayyaf mati ditembak

Kota Kinabalu: Pasukan keselamatan menembak mati dua lelaki disyaki ahli kumpulan pengganas Abu Abu Sayyaf (ASG) dalam kejadian di Pulau Timbang, Sandakan, awal pagi tadi.

Dalam kejadian 5 pagi itu, kedua-dua lelaki ditembak mati dalam insiden berbalas tembakan dengan pasukan keselamatan yang menjalankan operasi khas bagi mengesan kumpulan berkenaan.

Pasukan keselamatan turut merampas senjata api yang digunakan oleh kedua-dua suspek di lokasi kejadian.

Pesuruhjaya Polis Sabah, Datuk Hazani Ghazali ketika dihubungi mengesahkan mengenai kejadian itu dan akan mengadakan sidang media di Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Sandakan, jam 11 pagi nanti.

Difahamkan, kejayaan pasukan keselamatan ini susulan daripada maklumat operasi khas di Taman Sri Arjuna, Beaufort, 8 Mei lalu.

Hasil daripada maklumat itu, pasukan keselamatan menjalankan operasi bagi mengesan beberapa lagi ahli kumpulan Abu Sayyaf.

Pegawai dan anggota polis akhirnya berjaya mengesan dua ahli kumpulan Abu Sayyaf di Pulau Timbang, Sandakan dan berlaku berbalas tembakan hingga kedua-dua lelaki itu maut di lokasi kejadian.

Pegawai dan anggota keselamatan yang menjalankan operasi semuanya dalam keadaan selamat.

Sebelum ini, seramai lapan individu termasuk dua dalam senarai orang dikehendaki membabitkan kumpulan militan Abu Sayyaf ditahan dalam serbuan di kawasan paya bakau berhampiran Taman Sri Arjuna, Beaufort, 8 Mei lalu.

Susulan daripada itu, siasatan terus giat dijalankan polis sebelum lima lagi ahli kumpulan pengganas terbabit berjaya ditembak mati dalam insiden berbalas tembakan di lokasi sama, 17 Mei lalu.
