Group Lotus is sole owner of “Lotus” name in F1

It's all a very long story, but long story short, Lotus Renault GP has the rights to the Lotus name, and Team Lotus gets to keep their Team Lotus name.

Group Lotus, which sponsors the Renault team, retains the right to use the "Lotus" name on its own.

But the judge ruled it cannot enter F1 using the name Lotus for a team, a decision Group Lotus has announced its intention to appeal.

Fernandes bought the rights to the Team Lotus name from businessman David Hunt - brother of 1976 world champion James Hunt - before the start of the 2011 season.

The team boss was keen to stress the links between his new team and the historic Lotus, which was founded by Colin Chapman and won a series of six drivers' titles and seven constructors' championships through the 1960s and '70s.

But a dispute over the Lotus name began when Lotus Cars, who are owned by Malaysian manufacturer Proton, agreed a sponsorship deal with the Renault team for 2011 and as a result wanted their team to be referred to as "Lotus Renault".

The matter was also complicated by the details of a deal Fernandes had struck with Lotus Cars to use the Lotus name in F1.

And the saga deepened when both Team Lotus and the Renault team decided to race in the iconic black and gold Lotus livery - only for Fernandes to ultimately decide to stick with the original green and yellow colours.

The complex issues of the so-called "Lotus versus Lotus" row was finally resolved in London's High Court, with both sides counting the verdict as a victory.

In short, Team Lotus were allowed to continue running under that name while Group Lotus will keep the black and gold livery, but cannot use the famous badge in F1.

The judge also ruled that Group Lotus was entitled to end that licence agreement in 2010 and that, consequently, Team Lotus must pay damages for breaching that agreement.

"We are all pleased that it has been clarified that we are the rightful owners of Team Lotus," said Fernandes.

"We have always been confident that the factual evidence we presented would lead to this decision and today's judgment confirms that belief.

"We are delighted that we can turn our attention to ensuring success for Caterham Cars on the road and Team Lotus on track.

"Now our main aim is to add more history to the incredible story of Team Lotus over the coming months and years."

Group Lotus head of legal, Sarah Price, commented: "Group Lotus is pleased that its right to race under the Lotus name in F1 has been upheld and that the defendants' attempts to stop that have failed.

"The ongoing dispute with Team Lotus and associated companies has been a cause for concern for all at Group Lotus.

"Despite the detailed judgment there are issues which still require clarification and we remain committed to obtaining this much-needed clarity for the many fans of the Lotus marque - we are extremely grateful for their continued support.

"The decision to appeal has not been taken lightly."

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has been named by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the world’s 10th largest consumer of alcohol despite its small population and size.

Statistics by the international body this year also showed that Malaysians spent over US$500mil (RM1.5bil) on alcohol with a per capita consumption of seven litres.

Beer consumption in Malaysia is 11 litres per capita.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kie said the problem of alcohol consumption in the country was getting serious.

“Alcohol is not only causing a lot of health issues but is also contributing to a significant number of accidents,” she said here yesterday.

Heng was speaking to reporters after launching booklets and seminars on “Promote Healthy lifestyle: Reduce Alcohol Harm” organised by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) and supported by IOGT International, a worldwide community of non-governmental organisations, and the National Association of the Prevention of Drug Abuse (Pemadam).

She said the ministry, through the National Population and Family Development Board, would hold a campaign to create awareness on the danger of alcohol abuse.

She said 10 seminars would be held nationwide this year.

They would be conducted in Mandarin, Malay, English and Tamil and were aimed mostly at those from the Chinese and Indian communities, which had a high alcohol abuse rate.

“The public has to understand that alcohol is not part of our culture and it will bring harm if it is abused,” she said.

Earlier, in his speech, KLSCAH secretary-general Yong Yew Wei said the Road Safety Council estimated that drinking and driving caused 30% of road accidents nationwide, with 38% of these resulting in fatalities.

“A study also shows that absenteeism from workplace among alcoholics is 16 times higher than others,” he said, adding that non-governmental bodies played a vital role in promoting a healthy lifestyle.

However, before the mosaic was finished, the completed picture was posted on facebook.

And Bane looks more than a forbiddable opponent for Christian Bale's Batman.

While not grotesquely pumped as in the comics, Hardy's engorged muscles and muzzled face still retain iconic elements of the character combined with Nolan's moderating realism.

During this weekend's Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza, Ferrari will debut its special one-off Superamerica 45, a vehicle built exclusively for collector Peter Kalikow. Hello, gorgeous.

The Superamerica was designed, engineered and built in-house, and the car incorporates things like a carbon fiber rotating hardtop, as well as a completely redesigned boot in order to house the roof while it's removed. This appears to be similar to the mechanism used on the Ferrari 575-based Superamerica, as well as the (significantly cheaper) Renault Wind. Body-colored rear buttresses mold into the wide wheel arches. Other unique touches include brushed aluminum A-pillars, wing mirrors and a chrome front grille.

This special Superamerica 45 is painted in Blu Antille, which is designed to match the 1961 400 Superamerica cabriolet that Kalikow has in his collection. The 45's wheels are body-colored with a contrasting diamond finish, and a darker blue is used on the front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser.

This isn't as bad as it could have been -- Sony's PSN hasn't exactly been hacked again -- but what can only be described as a glaring oversight looks to have forced the company into hastily switching off PSN logins on its websites. The issue? If you legitimately forget your password and need to reset it, previously all you had to do was type in your e-mail address and date of birth, then choose a delightfully cunning new password. Sounds good? The problem is that if you were a PSN member before the hack then both your e-mail address and your date of birth (plus a lot of other frightening stuff) is known to the hackers. So, whoever has the millions of rows of data that were exposed could, in theory, re-exploit any account. Sony was made aware of the issue and those pages are now offline again, which should make the Japanese government feel just a little big smug.

Tekken: Blood Vengeance

A new Tekken movie has been announced by Namco Bandai. Due out this summer, Blood Vengeance is being produced by Digital Frontier (Resident Evil: Degeneration), with a screenplay by Dai Sato (Cowboy Bebop).

Talking at the Namco Bandai Level Up event in Dubai, Tekken-creator Katsuhiro Harada urged fans to forget about the recent straight-to-DVD Hollywood movie, as this is the first film project his team has been officially involved with.

The film is directed by Youichi Mouri, who directed opening animatics for both Tekken 5 and 6, as well as the above trailer.

Tekken: Blood Vengeance will hit screens this summer, with a DVD/Blu-ray release to follow.
