Taylors College Partners With Top Law School In Australia

"2+2" Bachelor of Law from Queensland University to be offered in 2007From 2007, students aspiring to study law can opt for a 2+2 degree twinning degree offered jointly by Taylor's College and the University of Queensland, whose Law School ranks among the top three in Australia.

Established in 1909, the University of Queensland is the largest and oldest university in Queensland and is one of only three founding Australian members of the Universitas 21, a select international network of comprehensive, research-intensive universities committed to world-best quality and practice. Academically, the University of Queensland is ranked 47th among the world's best universities, as per the UK's Times Higher Education Supplement 2005.

The partnership between the Taylor's College and University of Queensland was sealed with signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on 3 October at Sheraton Subang Hotel & Towers, Subang Jaya. Taylor's College was represented by its President Mr Ooi Chee Kok while Professor Charles Rickett, Sir Gerard Brennan Professor of Law and Head of TC Beirne School of Law signed on behalf of the University.

Guest-of-honour Mr Peter Doyle, the Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia, and alumnus of UQ's TC Beirne School of Law, was also present to witness the momentous occasion. He took the opportunity to commend both Taylor's College and the University of Queensland for their efforts and initiative to better strengthen bilateral ties between both countries.

"Last year, we saw 35,000 Malaysian graduates from Australia, 15,000 of whom studied overseas while the remaining 20,000 did an off-shore Australian course in Malaysia. These are encouraging numbers as they represent a supportive and rewarding relationship between both Malaysia and Australia. So long as both nations continue to work hand-in-hand, I have no doubt the numbers will continue to grow in the many years to come," said Doyle.

In his welcome address, Mr Ooi said the partnership represented an innovative new venture for both Taylor's College and the University of Queensland, as Taylor's College is partnering with one of the most prestigious of Australia's 39 universities, to offer a 2+2 twinning programme in law.

"The signing ceremony represents a milestone for both institutions as it signals an unprecedented partnership between Malaysia and Australia in forging new frontiers. In the long run, I believe this will pave the way for further collaborations between top institutions in both countries," said Mr Ooi.

Mr Ooi added that the new affiliation with the University of Queensland also opens up greater opportunities for Malaysian youth to read Law, as Australia is a country synonymous with the provision of world class education but at a more affordable price.

"Through this partnership, we aspire to promote legal studies in Australian universities to be on equal standing with its UK counterpart. The University of Queensland's law degree is recognised by the Malaysian Legal Qualifying Board, while East Malaysian students who complete this programme have the added advantage of side-stepping the need for a CLP," added Mr Ooi.
