ASUS Malaysia Online OverClocking Challenge - Chinese New Year OC Quickie

ASUS Malaysia is glad to announce the Lunar New Year OC Quickie challenge, specially made for Local OverClockers. It has been quite some time since there's a OC Competition held locally. We sincerely hope that the community will look beyond it as a competition, but rather as a platform to "comeback" to have some fun in OC.

Since it's a "Quickie" OC Challenge, I personally handpicked Super Pi as the challenge benchmark. Although Super Pi is based on the legacy x87 instructions set (subset of the x86 architecture), but it is still considered as the "main" OC Benchmark in the world. Most of the World OverClocking Championships still make use of this benchmark for its CPU Stage. Let's forget about how Super Pi is relevant as a benchmark/indicator to the real world performance but rather having fun with its characteristic. It scales pretty well with CPU/DRAM/IO performance as well as the wide possibility in "tweaking." And most importantly, it's our favourite benchmark. Mine at least.

23th July 2011 is the way we are waiting for a very long time, i mean the MSI Gaming Tournament (DotA) Crews. Once again, we got to meet some old friends from the gaming community we met last year in our very own MSI DotA Tournament 2010. This time, the first kick-off took place in FTZ ASiA.net, Penang. Here i would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to the FTZ ASiA.net management for the venue sponsor. We departed from MSI Malaysia Office around 1PM the day before the event. Our "Unser" was packed and loaded resulting in a 6 hour journey. We received plenty of calls regrading registration issue in the trip, as expected. Upon touch-down, we checked out FTZ ASiA.net and NZ World to have a idea on the setup for the tournament. Due to work commitment, Chan "Winter" Litt-Binn arrived around 2AM in the morning. If you are not aware why Winter is part of the MGTD 2011, he and Mushi is spearheading a group of enthusiast, the "Malaysia DotA Hideout" to conduct a DotA Workshop throughout MGTD 2011 State Qualifiers. In the DotA Workshop, themed "If we can't beat the best, we want YOU to do it," MDT will be giving tips on laning, ganking, supporting, farming, drafting, etc.

For the first kick-off leg, we hosted a 1vs1 Showmatch, featuring MSI very own Gaming Ambassador, Tan "Shizuma" Lyn Xhin versus the renowned DotA Strategist, Chan "Winter" Litt-Binn. During the showmatch, Shizuma used MSI's latest Gaming Notebook, the GT780.

Almost everyone has a USB flash drive now, ever since it was first introduced. Of course such useful technology will evolve naturally. The current mainstream USB flash drive is still version USB2.0 mainly due to the pricing. Although USB3.0, which claims to offer almost 10 times faster than its predecessor has been launched for quite some time now, the purchase volume is still considered low, at least here in Malaysia. MGT Facts:
MSI Gaming Tournament (MGT) is a self-organized event by MSI Malaysia, a local representative of Micro-Star Int'l CO., Ltd. MSI, is a world-renowned mainboard and graphics card manufacturer, which also produce its own Notebook. The MGT first started in 2010, known as MSI DotA Tournament 2010. The main theme of MSI Gaming Tourney will always be the same, "Game for Fun" and therefore it will be a tradition that in any of MSI Gaming Events, there won't be any registration fee.

Showmatch:
In the coming MGTD 2011, MSI will be holding a showmatch with their newly appointed Gaming Ambassador, Tan "Shizuma" Lyn Xhin in the 1st kick-off qualifier, FTZ ASiA.net Cyber Cafe, Penang and also the Grand Final. Two renowned local DotA player will be featured in 1 vs 1 showmatch against Shizuma.

DotA Workshop by "Malaysia DotA Hideout":
One of the biggest sub-event offered in MGTD 2011. This DotA Workshop is a cooperation between MSI and "Malaysia DotA Hideout" organization led by Chan "Winter" Litt-Binn and Chai "Mushi" Yee Fung. Both has their own strong point with "Winter" as one of the best drafter while "Mushi" is considered as a carry second to non. this DotA Workshop, themed "If we can't beat the best, we want YOU to do it," will be carried out during the end of each qualifier in the Cyber Cafe itself. Free to everyone, participants will be given tips to improve their game competitively. The topic includes laning, ganking, supporting, farming, drafting, etc.

Registration:
Registration of MSI Gaming Tournament (DotA) 2011 is through the Official Registration Site only. There's not other registration alternative. Each qualifier is open to 16 teams only, therefore first come first serve.

Kuching State Qualifier:

On 23th June 2011 MSI Malaysia announced the appointment of Tan "Shizuma" Lyn Xhin as their official local MSI Gaming Ambassador. Tan, or better known as Shizuma in the gaming community is regarded as one of the best female DotA gamer with international recognition. Her intriguing perfomance in the Iron Lady DotA Tournament 2010, Shanghai where she played alongside with PMS|Asterisk* to victory propelled her to instant stardom. With numerous achievements locally, namely Perak FTZ Invite Tournament 2009 Champion, World Cyber Games - DotA 2099 1st runner-up and SMM Kuala Lumpur Qualifier 2009 1st runner-up, she is no doubt a fast rising star to watch out for. Although competitive DotA is a male dominated arena, Shizuma is often seen in local DotA tournaments alongside male teammates. The skill and talent that she has honed in playing the game is widely recognized by fellow competitive gamers as being on par with her male counterparts.

Lately Shizuma has ventured into games other than DotA and is also fast making a name for herself there. At the recently concluded SMM Penang Qualifier Leg, Shizuma Played Counter Strike Online with Team SYT. It was the first time Shizuma was seen competing other than DotA. According to her manager, And Loh, Team STY picked Shizuma after a few trials with different players. The team captain, Khor "daemon" Wen Jian, who is a well-know Counter Strike player in the local scene, acknowledged her gaming talent and subsequently became her mentor.

On the 18th June 2011, Shizuma started her day with high hopes. It was the SMM Penang Qualifier Leg and she was participating in the Courter Strike Online Qualifier. As usual, her manager, Andy Loh picked her up for breakfast and a short prep before heading to the battlefield.. As it was pretty early in the morning and keen to avoid crowded areas, we had our breakfast in a quiet restaurant in Prangin Mall, Taihe Restaurant. This restaurant actually offers "Maggie Goreng Tomyam," and it was GOOOD!

It has been quite sometime since we had LN2 session on a VGA. If i recall correctly, the last round was coolice OverClocking his Gainward V-MODed 9800GT on LN2. So i guess it's about time to polish up our skill on VGA LN2 OverClocking. But if you are reading this Overview, which i guess alot people doesn't, this report is not about how high we could clock the VGA. The interesting part is that we insulated the VGA with vaseline, and WE WASH IT. We didn't aim high for this session of LN2 OverClocking as the amount of LN2 was very limited (left over from the Kingston Power User Gathering). I believe we will be doing another round of LN2 on the MSI N480GTX Lightning end of the month. Hopefully in Lowyat Plaza, another OverClocking Demo. Seems like Year 2010 is an OverClocking year for Malaysia.

MSI Mini OverClocking Gathering
Since there has been quite a 'few' requesting Mini OC Gathering recently, your request has been granted. As usual, "coolice and gang" is ready to serve the community. The only difference this time is that coolice will not be around and the location is not Sunway. It in Sanko's lair in Setapak. Fortunately after i made a call to my 'usual contact', MSI is willing to come out with 'prizes' for this round of Gathering. Ops, did i mention? There will be a mini competition. This time round i would like to gain feedback from the community what kind of challenge you all prefer. I'll follow the crowd. Do take note that i could only set up one AMD Based rig and one Intel Based rig. If you are a regular to "coolice and gang" gatherings, you should know that due to restriction budget/sponsor, we couldn't only provide 1 or 2 rigs for the OC Challenge. For bigger size OC Challenge it's not up to us, it's up to the manufacturers or big community websites (with income). We are only volunteering since there's hardly any OC Gatherings/Competitions in Malaysia.

MSI N450GTS Cyclone OC Edition
Different from the reference N450GTS, MSI released the MSI N450GTS Cyclone OC Edition sporting factory overclocked 850MHz GPU /1000MHz Memory clockspeed some time back. Designed for the price/performance-minded market, this graphic card can be found in Lowyat Plaza at the price around RM500. According to the official specification, this card is equipped with 9cm PWM Fan for 50% more airflow and 17℃ cooler than reference design. I did some simple testing on this card and here it goes. Let's see how it rivals with MSI own factory-overclocked Radeon HD5770 Hawk graphic card.

It has been very long since i meet fellow local OverClockers to OverClock together. So last week i managed to loan some hardware from MSI Malaysia for our mini event. The idea is to do a HWBot OC Marathon. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out as we would like it to be. We had quite a handful of hardware to bench and submit to HWBot but we only have 1 day to do that. So minus some hardware/software problems, we only managed a few scores to be submitted. Too bad the recent concluded Gigabyte Mini Competition champion, xixo_12 couldn't join us as he had to attend a oral test. And our beloved dblooi has some personal issue that day. But it couldn't be blamed as it was kinda a very rush event. They were notified few days earlier only.

For this MSI-HWBot OC Marathon, we managed to bench the AMD Phenom II and Intel Core i5-655K on Dry Ice. As Lacus and verdict has only 1 day time to spare, we only managed to bench Super Pi 1M and Super Pi 32M for the both processors. While other Futuremark benchmarks was done on air cooling on the Intel Core i5-655K. As it was a very rush effort, we didn't spend to much time on taking pictures. Everyone of us is helping each other in setup, benching, tweaking, etc.

[Mini-OC Test] i5-665K ES and N465GTX

Overview
Last week i had the opportunity to play with some of the latest hardware in the PC Industry. I was given an engineering sample of Intel Core i5 665K ES cpu and a Nvidia 465GTX graphic card to play with. Due to my busy schedule, i was unable to provide full-length review on both the cpu and graphic card. So i decided to run some simple benchmarks targeted to OverClockers. As always, let the pictures to the talking.

UPDATE 17-07-2010
After looking at the benchmark scores i obtain were kinda slow, i sent a feedback to MSI Malaysia. And after discussing with their engineer in Taiwan, i was told that the official BIOS v1.1 used does not fully utilize Intel K-Model processors. Therefore i decided to use the Beta Bios for another round of re-bench. For this round of re-bench session, i tried out Super Pi 32M first on Windows XP SP3 environment followed by Everest Ultimate Cache and Memory Benchmak, 3DMark 06 and finally 3DMark Vantage on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit environment.

Intel Core i5-665K Introduction
Recently Intel just released the K model processors with unlocked multiplier. Currently there are two LGA1156 models, Core i5-655K and Core i7-875K. No doubt that these K model processors are now the main interest in the OverClocking Community. OverClockers now do not need to spend large sum of money to purchase the Extreme Series processors to enjoy the fun of OverClocking an unlocked multiplier processor.

Malaysia HWBot Super Pi 32M Online Challenge
Just 2 months back, clon22, currently the Top Ranking OverClocker of Singapore organized the Team Group's Singapore Online Super Pi 32M Challenge to promote the local OverClocking Community. As the Malaysia OverClocking Community is deteriorating day by day, maybe it's time for a simple challenge to heat things up once again.

As this is a very small-scale community OverClocking Challenge, we decided not to involve any sponsors so that everyone can participate regardless of what brand of Mainboard or Memory used. We feel that this is the best way to promote local OverClocking Community. So how do we come out with the prizes? Same as our previous approach, once again we would make use of review samples and prizes won from various competitions. It's better this way than selling it in garage sales. We hope that the prizes come second to the fun of OverClocking.

3. Optional Memset/CPU Tweaker information if you want to share your settings which is highly recommended.
4. You can submit as many result as you like, as HWBot Competition Engine (HCE) will automatically take your best score as the final result.
5. Winners will have to submit an additional photo of your benchmark/rig setup and a video record of the Super Pi 32M after the competition. (Details will be given to winners after the competition.)
