OLED from Chinese screen maker failed Samsung's ❤️

Samsung was considering using screens made by Chinese firm BOE on their new smartphones. The change comes as it's believed that BOE’s OLED panels are cheaper than Samsung’s in-house screens. However, it is reported that the panels supplied by BOE couldn't make it to become the screens of the next Galaxy S series as they have failed in quality tests.

The panels are usually installed on a phone after they pass quality testing and mass-production testing. Sadly, BOE’s screens have been defeated in the first round before they make their way to being installed on the Samsung Galaxy S30/S21. However, it's suggested that there’s still time for the panel to pass the testing. Both screen manufacturers BOE and China Star have “failed to get into Samsung”, this could be signaling that the company has already rejected the alternatives to Samsung display.

Just two weeks ago, Sony launched the pre-order campaign for its new flagship - the Xperia 1 II. It included a free pair of Sony WH-1000XM3 noise cancelling headphones but the phone started showing as out of stock in most markets yesterday. As of now now most Sony stores and its partners have altered the promo bundle.

It appears that the headphones stock was actually the problem as the pre-order campaign continues with a new bundle. This time around, you get the Sony Style Cover View XQZ-CVAT case, which usually costs €59.99.

Alternatively, the company might be looking to reach a different audience with its new bundle - those that would rather have a case out of the box than the headphones. We'll be hoping to get a clarification from Sony in the near future.

In this modern internet age, one might think that it's almost impossible to get scammed online if there's a too-good-to-be-true deal. Not for these two Malaysians though, who recently got conned and lost a total of RM6800. How in the world did this happen? Well, take a read below.

According to the police report, the two victims are a 16-year old teenage boy and the other a 46-year old man. For the first case, the teen saw an iPhone 6S Plus ad on an Instagram page for just RM450 per unit which too good to be true. Your mind is probably screaming "It's a trap" by now but not to this kid, who proceeded to buy 2 iPhones and transferred RM900 to the designated bank account. Here's the worst part, the teen was asked to pay the seller RM1000 for the transportation fee which is a total loss of RM1900.

Then onto the second case, the man first saw a Sony Xperia XZ3 on sale for just RM1100 on some online shopping platform. Obviously, this is too cheap for a flagship even if it was selling as a secondhand, but it didn't register this boomer's brain and contacted the seller on WhatsApp. After some arrangements of transferring the money to the designated bank account and "various fees", he lost RM4900. Oof.

With this, both victims have yet to receive their phones and made a police report. The moral of this story is obvious but we urge everyone to be careful when buying products online, no matter how enticing the sale and image is.

AMD could be developing a smartphone chipset with the Ryzen branding. Codenamed Ryzen C7, the chipset has two Gaugin Pro CPU cores (3GHz), two Cortex-A78 cores (2.6GHz), and four Cortex-A55 cores (2GHz). The Gaugin Pro is based on the Cortex-X1 that was announced recently alongside the Cortex-A78.

Ryzen C7 also packs a GPU based on an RDNA 2 Mobile architecture, this GPU will perform 45% better than an Adreno 650 GPU, which is the GPU found in the Snapdragon 865 chipset. Besides that, the chipset is also supposed to support 5G, 144Hz refresh rate, LPDDR5 RAM, WiFi 6, and more.

Looking for a new job is pretty tough during these current circumstances, and you'd be crazy enough if you want to resign right now. According to their poster, the company is looking to add new blood and fresh talent from all over the world. As long as you're a post-graduate or you got a masters degree who graduated from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2021 (yes, until the end of next year), you are eligible to join and the company will provide with world-class challenging topics that include computer software architecture, semiconductor and chipset technology, and more. Besides that, they will also provide mentorship and 5x the salary (most probably in their China Yuan currency).

From their recruitment poster, the indirect translation reads:

The tech giant is aggressively recruiting engineers to work on its future SoC and most of the engineers come from well-known companies.

Oppo ropes in MediaTek, Qualcomm and HiSilicon engineers to work on its own chip
Most recently, Oppo recruited a couple of top executives from MediaTek and Unisoc. Jeffery Lu, MediaTek's co-chief operating officer is on the list of new employees along with an executive involved with MediaTek's 5G chip development has also agreed to Oppo's offer. Xiaomi also gave away one of its executives.

But that's not all, the company has poached employees from Huawei's chip division HiSilicon as well as the US-based chip maker Qualcomm.

In an interview with Oppo representative said that it's investing heavily in chip-related R&D to strengthen and simplify its supply chain. So far, the Chinese firm has been heavily reliant on MediaTek and Qualcomm and doesn't want to fall into the same trap as Huawei.

Obviously this venture will cost a lot of money and take at least a few years of development. An actual product release is certainly not coming in the near future.

Samsung manufacturing 5nm Exynos in August ❤️

Samsung has been developing its 5nm EUV process for the past few months, Samsung is ready for mass production to start. The next chip will be called Exynos 992, and Samsung Electronics has the final say whether the platform will arrive with the Galaxy Note20 smartphone lineup in August.

The Exynos 992 will use ARM’s Cortex-A78 CPU cores and Mali-G78 GPU architecture. In theory, this would mean 20% more efficiency of the processor, compared with the existin Cortex-A77 on the Exynos 990, while the graphics unit will offer 25% better performance than the Mali-G77. ARM confirmed the Cortex-A78 will be used in chipsets built on a 5nm process that is also being developed by the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

Samsung might use the Exynos 992 chipset only for Galaxy Note20 smartphones at home, while pushing all overseas models with Snapdragon chipset. That way Samsung will demonstrate its powers in the Foundry and System LSI divisions in an attempt to lure companies to switch from its Taiwanese rival.
