Paddington 2 Scores 100% on RT

‘Paddington 2’ is the Fourth Film to Score 100% on Rotten Tomatoes With Over 100 Reviews

The year has just begun, but one film has already netted the coveted “best reviewed film of the year” classification: Paddington 2. The film currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 196 positive reviews. This makes Paddington 2 the second family film in history, and the fourth film overall, to remain at 100% with over 100 reviews. Find more details on the Paddington 2 Rotten Tomatoes score below.

Look out, Lady Bird – Paddington 2 is gunning for you. The sequel to the utterly enchanting 2015 family film is sitting pretty with 196 positive, or “Fresh,” reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. This distinction makes Paddington 2 the first critically acclaimed film of 2018, and also the second family film in history to remain at 100% with over 100 reviews and the fourth film currently at 100% with that many reviews. The first film to hold the title was 1999’s Toy Story 2, another sequel. The only other films to have a 100% rating with over 100 reviews are 2008’s Man on Wire (157 reviews) and 2016’s Things to Come (130 reviews).

This news likely won’t come as much of a surprise to those who have seen and loved the first Paddington, a lovely, charming, heartfelt movie that also featured Nicole Kidman trying to murder a friendly bear. Paddington 2 appears to be more of the same, in the best possible way. In his review for /Film, Josh Spiegel wrote of Paddington 2:

“Any film critic worth his or her salt will tell you that January is a pretty rough month for new releases. It’s a month marked by high-profile films from the previous year expanding around the country as they aim to get awards attention. Rare is the January release that rises above the status of being forgettable. But rare too is the sequel that improves upon its predecessor, and yet, here we are with the North American release of the utterly delightful Paddington 2. Bringing together many of the key players from the delightful 2015 original, Paddington 2 doubles down on the previous film’s many charms, introduces a cheeky new villain, and is thoroughly giddy fun.”

Here’s the obligatory section of this story where I have to remind readers that there’s a lot more to movie reviews than a Rotten Tomatoes number. At the end of last year, a mini-controversy broke out when Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed coming-of-age film Lady Bird had its perfect 100% rating tarnished by a single reviewer’s “Rotten” review. The reviewer, who I’m not even going to bother to name here, was clearly on a trolling mission to bring the film’s score down – he admitted as much on Twitter. That said, his act of Rotten Tomatoes sabotage does not make Lady Bird any less-good if you personally enjoy it. Rotten Tomatoes is a review aggregator, and should be used as a guide, not a definitive statement on a film’s quality.

Still, it’s nice to see critics taking so well to Paddington 2. Sadly, this high critical praise doesn’t seem to be translating to box office dollars: the film is underperforming slightly at the box office, which might stall any future Paddington sequels. This would be a true shame, since this series is proving to be a real gem. In other words, go out there and see Paddington 2, folks.

Beauty and the Beast not shelved

‘Beauty and the Beast’ not shelved, but fate still in limbo

PETALING JAYA: The fate of Disney film Beauty and the Beast is still in limbo although it has been given the all-clear by the Malaysian Censorship Board (LPF).

The film’s Malaysian release date, originally scheduled for March 16, has been postponed indefinitely.

The Walt Disney Company (Malaysia) reiterated that the release date is merely postponed and the movie has not been “shelved,” as reported by an international news agency.

“Our stand remains that the movie release is postponed. (The) release date is undergoing internal review,” a Disney representative told The Star on Tuesday.

The Associated Press reported earlier that Disney had shelved the movie in Malaysia, but did not name its source.

LPF has given the green light for Beauty and the Beast to be shown in Malaysian cinemas with a minor edit.

“The film has been approved with a P13 parental guidance classification, with a minor cut,” LPF chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid told The Star on Monday.

The minor cut concerned a “gay moment” in the film, said Abdul Halim.

He added that the release date is not decided by LPF.

“Once a film receives approval, it means it can be screened. However, the date of screening and where the screening takes place is not under LPF’s jurisdiction.

“We only look at the content and give a decision on whether the movie gets approved or not,” Abdul Halim said.

Starring Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast and Luke Evans as Gaston, Beauty and the Beast is a live-action remake of Disney's classic animated feature, which became the first animated film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 1991.

In an interview with UK magazine Attitude, Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon said that the character of Le Fou, played by Josh Gad, would have a “nice exclusively gay moment” in the film.

“Le Fou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston.

“He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realising that he has these feelings,” Condon said.

The “gay moment” has become the centre of controversy. Russia has imposed restrictions on the film, with children under the age of 16 banned from watching it.

A drive-through cinema in Alabama, United States, also banned the film from its screens because of the gay character.

In Singapore, Anglican Bishop Rennis Ponniah issued an advisory urging its clergy and deaconesses to alert their congregation about the homosexual content in the film.

Golden Screen Cinemas and TGV Cinemas in Malaysia are offering refunds for customers who bought Beauty and the Beast tickets following the announcement that the film’s local release date has been postponed indefinitely.

Akagi Nyugyo Co. is apologizing for increasing the price of its long-selling ice treat Gari-Gari Kun. Starting April this month, each popsicle’s price will be raised from 60 yen to 70 yen. This is the first price hike in 25 years.

As the Mainichi News points out, Akagi isn’t the only company raising prices (Suntory whisky, for example, will also be more expensive) this spring, but so far, the company is the first I’ve seen to apologize like this.

Playing in the background is Wataru Takada’s wonderful folk song "Neage" (値上げ), which means “Price Hike.” The lyrics talk about not wanting to increase the price, while the text reads, “We held out for 25 years, but [the price is increasing] from 60 to 70 [yen].” That’s a price increase of ten yen, which is around 9 cents. The reason for the hike, Mainichi News explains, is due to an increase in the cost of ingredients and labor.

Then the staff, executives and all bow before the camera. Apology culture can be seen through Japanese corporate culture, especially when there are fuck-ups, but here, this is different. It’s also a very smart way to introduce a price increase and drums up publicity.

Gov't mulls increasing fines for traffic offences

14.6 million outstanding traffic summons worth RM1.46 billion were unpaid from 2010 to 2015, disclosed Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today.

Out of the 28.43 million summons issued in the past six years, only 13.83 million summons totalling RM1.58 billion were paid by road users.

He said this based on the statistics of the Compound Online Payment System as recorded by the police.

The government is mulling increasing the maximum amount of traffic compounds as the current amounts are unable to inflict fear in the road users, said Zahid in his capacity as home minister.

The government has never reviewed the maximum compounds of traffic summons since the Road Transport Act 1987 came to force 29 years ago, he said.

"However, the matter is still under review. (We are) getting feedback from various stakeholders before implementation," he said.

The proposal was brought by the inspector-general of police as an effort to make road users more careful. It is also to educate the community that the offences can lead to accidents, he added.

These offences include speeding, crossing double-lines, cutting in front of queueing traffic and beating traffic lights, he explained.

Najib's son didn't force anyone out to perform

The premier’s son Norashman Najib did not ask to perform at Zouk Singapore, but came to the club on an invitation.

This was clarified by Rizal Mansor, the aide to Norashman’s mother, Rosmah Mansor.

“So how could Norashman force anyone (so that he could perform)?” Rizal said in a Facebook post last night.

The 26-year-old, he said, was invited by the club’s management to perform as the finishing act due to his turntable skills.

“Taking into account that it was an acknowledgment of his talent and hobby, Ashman agreed to do the performance,” said Rizal, referring to Najib’s son by his nickname.

Claiming that Norashman only started performing after the contracted time of the deejay before him had ended, Rizal said there was a misunderstanding between the deejay and the club’s management on the timing of the performance.

“The misunderstanding was between the two parties, it had nothing to do with Ashman. Reports that claim Ashman had forced the club management or the deejays to stop the performance are simply not true.”

It was reported that the popular club had allegedly interrupted renowned Egyptian deejays Aly & Fila's set so that Norashman could play his own set.

The alleged incident, which occurred last Saturday, was circulated on social media, and a video relating to it was posted on Facebook and YouTube.

In a statement issued yesterday, however, Zouk denied that the deejays were interrupted midway during their performance.

However, the brief statement made no reference to Norashman.

In the video, an infuriated Fila (Fadi Wassef Naguib) told the crowd: "[…] It seems that Zouk here wants someone else to play."

This elicited loud jeers.

"Not only because of that - because apparently he's the son of a prime minister. Thank you so much, enjoy my last track.

"I'll see you somewhere in the future. Not in Zouk anymore! Because I won't play in Zouk anymore. They've insulted me, but I love you guys," he added.

How fast is your internet? How much does it frustrate you? Although you likely have a few options for your broadband and mobile data plans, the answers to those questions are largely dictated by which country you’re in.

Data for the latest broadband and cellular speeds across Asia-Pacific reveal that Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan come out ahead in the home broadband race, but the picture is very different for those out of the house on their smartphones. It’s actually New Zealand, China, and Taiwan that surge ahead in mobile data speeds. The web speed data comes from Ookla’s Net Index, and then we’ve turned all those facts and stats into the infographic you see below.

While Asia beats the global average on broadband speeds, there’s still a huge difference between the haves and the have-nots. Singapore is blazing ahead on an average speed of 118.8 Mbps on broadband, but the Philippines is limping along at 3.6 Mbps. Even worse is that while Singapore’s fixed-line speeds have nearly doubled in the past year, the speed in the Philippines inched up a meager six percent in the past 12 months.

It’s a similar story of woe when it comes to Asia’s cellular speeds. While mobile data in New Zealand and China zooms along at an average of 27.7 and 27.6 Mbps respectively as 4G has caught on in a big way in both nations in the past year, people in Vietnam are staring at blank white pages on their smartphones as data trickles out at just 1.9 Mbps.
