Problem connecting laptop to TV

Hey gurus,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop and I'm trying to hook up my laptop to my LCD TV for enhanced visual experience

Previously I managed to hook up the laptop to the TV with a 4-pin S-video cable (laptop has 7 pin s-video output though) --> yellow RCA for TV, with audio coming out from the laptop. However it's an old cable and it's now not showing colour on the TV anymore.

I've just bought a 7-pin S-video-->3 RCA (yellow, red and white) but the same problem occured! The picture display is fine, but it's all greyscale. Just wondering if it's the cable problem or am I missing something? I've tried adjusting settings on the TV and laptop after doing some research online (apparently quite a common problem) but nothing works. I'm guessing it's the cable because previously it worked but now it doesn't

PS: The old S-video cable was bought by my friend in Singapore and looks like it's of good quality- gold-plated and made in Japan. The current one I bought is the normal cable found in computer shops..

Any help will be much appreciated!!

Multiple virus/trojan attacks

Hi guys,

I just got back from Melbourne and my dad's oldie is getting various virus attacks due to poor housekeeping etc (also rather IT illiterate). Anyhow the comp has Avira antivirus installed and Zone alarm as firewall. Avira did pick up a few trojans which keeps returning as a different name affecting the computer. Hotmail doesn't work on IE now but works fine on Firefox.

I've done a hijackthis scan and hopefully someone can shed light on pointers to resolve the issue. Many thanks in advance!!

Big problem with comp

I'm currently having a lot of problems with my computer that has been abused by my dad. He has never updated anti-virus or performed any checks for 9 months! And lately he complained he couldn't open any attachments on hotmail. 2 days ago I updated all anti virus programs and did a thorough check- AVG detected 3 viruses and deleted them while Spybot and Ad Aware also managed to detect lots of malware which I cleaned as well. The computer worked well for a day (managed to open hotmail attachments) until yesterday night when it suddenly started to become really really slow- the CPU usage is always at 100% and it takes ages for IE to open up as well.

I can't even do a HijackThis scan cause it hangs halfway and I couldn't access SafeMode as well to perform scans. I remember scanning twice with AVG before this problem started and the system was clean.

I'm open to any suggestions but please do not suggest reformatting until absolutely necessary. Thanks a lot!

IE7 problem

Hi all,

Lately I've been having some problems with my IE7- one page hangs and I can't do anything do any other tabs until I close all running tabs. And there are times when my IE will mess with my volume control- I won't be able to open up my volume control to adjust settings.

I've ran scans with Spybot and Avira antivirus but nothing significant came up- although the volume control problem was solved, but not the IE problem. I've done a hijackthis scan as well so hopefully some sifu can run through the log to see if there's any big problems.

Thanks a lot!

Problem with Internet connection

Hi all,

Been having some problems with my wireless Internet connection lately- whenever I download a file from sites like sendspace, megaupload, filefront etc, halfway through the download I'll get disconnected and reconnected, and so my files stop downloading halfway through which is really annoying (doesn't work with FlashGet either), so I'm just curious if it could be a virus infecting my computer or something else? The disconnections are usually brief, about 3-5 secs, and my downloads are dead if I get the limited connectivity message.

I did virus scans but nothing turned up....any ideas?

Unsure if PC's infected

So this is what happened-

A friend wanted to send me a ZIP file over MSN and sent it through the shared folders option, which I accepted without thinking twice (my bad). And halfway through the transfer my laptop starting acting weird- I opened a video (with Real Alternative) and when I opened up my volume control an error popped up saying that the driver was missing- then my computer wouldn't show up when I double click on desktop. The interface looked different as well, so I was a little freaked out.

Finally decided to restart my laptop and all seemed fine again. Still I did virus scans- Spybot, Antivir and BitDefender Online Scan- all came back with positive results. Thing is I still feel my laptop acting up, like ZoneAlarm doesn't autostart up when I turn on the laptop and suddenly my wallpaper disappears.

Hope any sifus here can take a look at my HijackThis log

Possible Soundcard Problem

I'm just helping a friend to post up here, she wanna know if her soundcard has fried since she can't use a mic (headset) and the speaker won't work when she turns on music on WMP.

I asked her to check the drivers under Device Manager and it seems that the drivers needed have been installed..does this mean that most probably her soundcard is faulty?

RAM problem

I just found a RAM during spring clean recently so I decided to test the RAM if it's faulty or not, but now I can't determine if the RAM is faulty or the RAM slot for the PC is faulty because it can't seem to detect the RAMs at times. One question though, if CPU-Z manages to detect the RAM does it mean it's functioning properly?

Anyways I have 4 RAMs (actually 3 but I found one cleaning up) and 3 RAM slots on my old comp so I had to switch the RAMS. First try was-

Slot 1- Kingston PC133/128MB
Slot 2- Kingston PC133/256MB

Checked System and it came out as 384MB. RAMs checked.

2nd try-
Slot 1- Unknown brand(the found RAM) PC100/64MB
Slot 2- Infineon PC133/128MB
Slot 3- Kingston PC133/128MB

Checked System but the results showed 256MB only. Checked CPU-Z and it says 320MB and all RAMs could be detected.

3rd try-
Slot 1- Kingston PC133/128MB
Slot 2- Infineon PC133/128MB
Slot 3- Kingston PC133/256MB

Tried to boot up the comp but it just beeped loudly 5 times. Hit the restart button and the same thing happen but when I attempted to shut down the CPU by holding on to the power button it managed to boot up. Curious I shut down the comp and turned it on again to find it booting up successfully. Then I checked System and it states 512MB.

Well my main concern is to know if any parts are faulty, and if CPU-Z manages to detect the RAM does that mean the RAM is functioning?

PC can't detect thumbdrive

Recently got an A Data thumbdrive as a gift and wanted to use it yesterday but my desktop couldn't detect it. I then plugged it onto my laptop and it worked so I tested it again on the desktop, same problem. Shouldn't be my desktop's problem cause I tested two other thumbdrives (Transcend and Toshiba) and both of them worked on my desktop.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Quick question with wireless networking

Personal equipment
Modem:
Router: Prolink 9000G
Firewall used:

I have a Prolink 9000G at home and I'm aware that if other PCs share the internet connection both PCs should share the same IP address, correct? I'm just curious because lately when I connect my Dell 6400 through wireless the IP address shown (danasoft.com) is different than the main computer...so far internet connection have not been affected but I'm just curious since I've been told that PCs using the same connection should share the same IP address.

Hi sifus,

Just about 2 days ago this message popped up when I started my comp-

"Cannot load C:\Windows\System32\drivers\qy6ai.sys" I didn't think it was anything important so I ignored the message (just clicked ok) and it doesn't pop up everytime I start up my computer.

Oddly when I was gonna update definitions for my spyware programs I couldn't start up Spybot. Is it related and any ideas how can I fix the problem?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Thumbdrive infection

My Transcend thumbdrive got infected by a Trojan in school's computer sometime back. I didn't really bother because I could access my files, but now I have to right click-->open everytime I wanna browse files in my thumbdrive through My Computer.

AVG first detected it as a Trojan horse PSW.Delf.2.Al under sxs.exe, and today it detected the same file (sxs.exe) but the Trojan changed into a virus named Win32/PE Patch.

I think the virus is residing in one of my folders which self created a folder 't#' and duplicated the files in that folder. I tried deleting it but an error popped up.

Any ideas how can I clean it?
