Malaysian Horse at Melbourne Cup

QUOTE

The race that stops two nations?

MELBOURNE, Nov 1 — With a name like So You Think, there are all sorts of scintillating permutations when it comes to clever newspaper headlines.
But to the cognoscenti and mug punter there is no doubt that the headline the day after tomorrow’s Melbourne Cup race will be “Think Again, And Again”.

Not since the New Zealand gelding Rising Fast in 1954 would a thoroughbred have won three Group 1 races in one season. And the handsome black stallion So You Think would be the first that is majority Malaysian owned.

Far from Melbourne, in Kuala Lumpur, the National Cancer Society Malaysia will be holding its own “Day At the Races” — a fund-raiser — at Doubletree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur.

“To have a Malaysian horse owner adds to the excitement,” says Clare Ratnasingham, board member and project director at the society. “Last year, the non-racing crowd at the (society’s fund raiser) got into the swing of the race when they knew a Malaysian was running.”

The Australian News Network will broadcast the race “live” over Astro. Kuala Lumpur-based Victoria government representative Tim Dillon relishes the prospect of “the race that stops two nations.”

Dillon loves The Cup for what it represents about the Australian way of life: “love of sports and the outdoors; quality time with family and friends; food and wine; multiculturalism — entrants come from all around the world; equality — every horse has a chance and more often than not an underdog wins; and of course the Aussie sense of fun and good humour.”

“It makes me proud to be an Australian, and I hope every Malaysian can one day experience The Cup live,” says Dillon. “The atmosphere is simply amazing and it should be on everyone’s bucket list.”

So You Think has been the talk of the town for the last two weeks. The feverish pitch started at the running of the Cox Plate in Moonee Valley on October 23 when it won its second consecutive Plate.

So You Think had been an unbackable favourite at A$1.50. Bookmakers invoked a rule that would permit those who choose to, to leave the stallion out of the betting. Those who took this option would pay out win bets on the second-placed horse should So You Think win.

After its second Cox Plate win, four-year-old So You Think had won seven of its 10 career starts and run two second placings, for total stakes earnings of more than A$4.6 million (RM14 million).

Fans snapped up the A$1.70 offered for the stallion in the Mackinnon Stakes as the Carnival last Saturday [Oct 23] arrived at Flemington, home of The Cup. In heavy going, the freakish galloper showed it was as much a mudlark.

Scepticism whether the galloper would be able to step up from the 2,000 metres of the Cox Plate and Mackinnon Stakes to the 3,200 metres of The Cup evaporated. Few would bet against the winning partnership of owner Datuk Tan Chin Nam and legendary trainer Bart Cummings. Together they have won four Cups, the last in 2008.

So You Think was promptly installed favourite at A$3.50. The second favourite is a distant A$7.50.

The weather forecast tomorrow is for sunny periods with scattered showers. Little will stop the plumage and high fashion in stiletto heels sinking into defenceless turf for the 150th anniversary running of The Cup.

The barrier goes up at 3.15pm — 12.15pm in Malaysia

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/feature...ps-two-nations/

anyone betting??
