Xeon5600 & x58 chipset = can mix or not?

Sometimes people would buy Xeon procs and put on home-user based mobo and it work as smooth as silk. For instance, during Core2 Duo and Core2Quad era. Processor like C2d E8400 is equivalent to Xeon X3110 or C2Q 9550 is equivalent to Xeon X3360. The Xeon W-3520 is workstation derivatives of i7 920 and pretty much works on x58 mobo (as seen on some forumers sig, Gigabyte listed this on its support list). In short, Xeon are work station derivatives of Intel Core processor and would slot in and RUN although motherboard manufacturers NEVER list down support for those CPUs.

Now that Westmere is coming out in form of Xeon E5600 series, I wanted to know whether it works or not when coupled with x58 boards.... Im planning to use the E5620... looking at this processor spec it should resemble 980X minus two physical core, slower QPI and lower clock speed. That means vast 12mb of cache and 32nm tiny weeny manufacturing process with the mighty LGA1366 socket. 980X is widely supported by X58 boards. Of course, Intel wouldn't speak much of Xeons processor support on x58 chipset since it would challenge other procs in the i7-9xx range. This is NOT AS SIMPLE as dropping at a manufacturer site and checking out the CPU support list. Its more on venturing according to intelligent guesses, geek impulses + some luck .

So, anyone with superior technical knowledge out there can point out WILL IT WORK? Any Intel engineers would be kind to respond under anonymity that this thing can be achieved? BTW, im planning to use Asus x58 mobo, which model, its still under consideration. You guys may suggest one.

Thanks in advance

My fren PC refuse to shutdown, but screen blank

Hello guys. My friend is having a trouble which me myself cannot troubleshoot, and I hope any lyn forumers may have the best solution.

My friend PC refused to shut down. After clicking start>(right arrow)ShutDown, the usual shutdown procedure happens. The Vista teal splash screen with 'shutting down' accompanied with the spinning ring. Later the LCD goes blank as if the shutdown is successful

Instead, his rig is still radiating light, fans is spinning and harddisk activity is still on. I tried to kacau the maus and KB to ensure the PC is not in sleep mode, yet, it never wake and LCD keeps being blank.

I've tried:-
1- opening up his rig and cleaning all the parts from dust, including the proc fan, graphic card fan, PSU fan, case fan and everything in between
2- Detaching and reattach the power cable to most components (graphic card, harddisk and 8-pin CPU ), tightening his modular cables.
3- Went into BIOS and disable the wake-up by KB or maus, setting BIOS to S3 Sleep State, setting ACPI to S3,S1 Enabled
4- Entering 'regedit' to quicken the shutdown time from 20000 (20sec) to 13000 (13sec)
5- Updated to the latest Catalyst Driver available from AMD. (10.2)

Yet, all my effort resulted in nothing fruitful, his rig still has fans spinning, LED blinking and HDD activity indicator blinking.

Is there a button I forgot to press, ritual that I've missed or chant I forgot to mention...any help?

His specs

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz, no-OC
Gigabyte X58-UD3R
Kingston Value RAM DDR3 3Gb
Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X 1Gb DDR5
640Gb WD Harddisk
Vista64 Ultimate
ion2 640watt modular PSU

Artificially Inflated

With Core i5 and i7 800-series OFFICIALLY coming out within a few days, many are looking forward to upgrade their platform to these new toys.

Regarding a few post I've read that current price for i5 mobos and procs will be lower after OFFICIAL launch leads me to speculate whether the sellers are raising the price to take advantage of knee-jerk reaction/high-anticipation of those who seriously wanted to adopt to these platform super early.

Frankly I do not want to shun anyone out there with intention to go P55 in next 2-3days neither attack sales thread offering i5+P55, I just want some facts (which evetually would benefit others here too ). Could anyone out there with their sets of data and streams of exchange rates (US$ to RM bla...bla....) , those who are familiar with product distribution etc. etc. justify the price. Is it artificially inflated or launch price itself. Perhaps... who knows? lower?

Thanks in advance!!!

WTA - Corsair Dominator or Kingston HyperX?

Err.... I hope I post this in the right section of LYF

I have decided upon upgrading to quality, performance RAM... from my survey; I had 2 shortlisted RAMS im vying to acquire, they are

First, the Corsair Dominator TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF ( 2 X 2GB ) DDR2 1066 ( included with triple fan airflow kit )

Second; Kingston Hyper X T1 Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 ( Blue colour, with tall heatsink 'finpin' )

Please, I need your suggestions and recommendation on which one is slightly better. Which RAMs gives value for bucks, and gives lesser headache. If so, I appreciate any views in technical aspects as I heard about Kingston using memory chips so-called 'elpida', I also heard about 'd9' chips, and I needed clarification of all these. If u have any other brands of RAMs that are excellent/ on-par with these two, please bring fourth and state their advantages, I might consider. But, dun need to gado-gado in this thread la..... hehe

I know, I could just ignore and pick one and feel happy... but, u know, I had habits of making informed decision....

Thanks in advance!
