Demodex (Eyelash mites) and 101 Hair Care.

Hi all,

I just want to share an experience about 101 Hair Care. Please take note that this happened about 3 years ago. Before I start, I would like make a disclaimer. I'm not accusing 101 Hair Care of anything as I can't prove it was caused by them on the thing I'm about to share. I am also not an expert on demodex (aka "Eyelash Mites'). So, let's start rolling.

Roughly about 3 years ago, I got a hair care treatment voucher from a roadshow they had at my company. I had quite bad dandruff problem. Can't remember whether I got it for free or I bought it for cheap price. So, I made an appointment for the treatment. I went to the Queensbay branch in Penang.

I met a lovely lady who explain to me everything and checked my hair and talked to me about the problems with my scalp. Then, she went to explain about demodex. According to her, it could cause baldness if not treated. So, she proceed to take some tissue of my scalp by using some tool which look like forceps. That tool was kept inside some liquid solution. So, she pressed it on my scalp at several area and looked through a microscope with a camera attached to it. She was going around the sample and finally there was 1 little organism which wasn't moving at all. She said I have demodex. I was a little bit worried about it. Then, we proceed with some treatment a hair wash. Of course, they tried to persuade me to take more treatment to fix my dandruff and demodex problem. I was convinced to buy shampoo. I must say, the treatment felt really good.

But the issue isn't on their service or the treatment.
It was the demodex. I went back home and searched more about demodex. I couldn't find any reference by any research that It causes hair loses on head. Only hair treatment centers (like 1010 Hair Care) claims that it cause hair loss. The best part is, it is know as Eyelash Mites. Why?

Demodex lives in your eyelash and eyebrow hair follicles. Not on your head. That's why they are known as eyelash mites. Other places it lives at are your face, forehead and other places other than your head. It eats dead skins and oils not the follicles. Only in a very serious case due to low immune system, it could cause problem to your eyelash.

So, few days later, my eyes started to feel itchy. I wasn't really concerned much about it. About 2 week later, guess what, I had inflammation on my eyelash. I had demodicosis. It wasn't very serious, but I always felt itchy and every morning when I woke up, I started to have those gluey sticky yellow stuff stick on my eyelashes. Even during day time, a small amount of those yellow stuff will appear. I have to wash my eye very frequent. Only after a month it disappeared.

Was the demodex introduced to my body during the check at 101 Hair Care? If yes, they are very unethical for doing so. To say it's just a coincidence, I doubt it. Their claim that demodex can cause hair loss is baseless. So everyone, please don't fall into their trap.

If you do have demodex, first thing to do is scrub your eyelash and wash with water. If it persist and look terrible seek treatment from the doctor. Usually our body immune system would able to reduce it. I didn't seek doctor and it disappeared by itself. It must have been my immune system took a month to deal with it.

Do you guys have experince similar like me after visting 101 Hair Care or any other hair care centers? If yes, please do share it here/

FYI, There are over 65 species of demodex. Of those, only 2 lives on human. Dogs also have it, but it's a different species, so don't panic.
The riskiest groups are women (or some men) who wear a good deal of eye makeup and people with oily skin. Elderly people and those with weakened immune systems may be more prone to high eyelash mite populations as well.

Arrogant rude True Fitness consultant

I had the worst experience at True Fitness on 27th July 2013 (Saturday).
It's all started with a phone call by a cute girl, Julie from True Fitness, Jaya 33. I was offered a 1 week free trial and asked me have I been to their fitness center. I told her the truth, that I have received a 1 month free trial before, but unfortunately I couldn't to even once during the 1 month period. Then, she told me that I can still try it out and she can give maximum of 2 weeks free trial. So, I agreed and met her on Saturday. She did the usual thing as all other consultant will do. Asked my goals, showed me around the facilities and their packages. I told her that I am currently looking for a gym and have been going for free trials at several places before I decide which one to choose. Btw, I am currently going to MuayFit. Their classes are great, but their gym is a bit sucky (depending on your goal). So, after talking to her a while, she asked me to wait for a while she get me the free trial pass.

Then, she came with her manager, and he asked me few questions and what I'm looking for to choose a gym and what they can do to get me to signed up today. I just told him I need to try 1st. Again he asked whether have I been to True Fitness before. I told him about the 1 month free trial story and also about me trying it out 5 years ago. Then, he just said, okay he'll print the 1 week trial pass. I told him I was offered 2 weeks, and he looked at that Julie and she said, she did offer 2 weeks. So, he left with the girl.

Earlier during the gym tour, I bumped into one of my good friend. He has been a member for more than a year and have been taking personal trainers. So, as I was waiting for the manager and that cute girl to get me the free trial pass, my friend came and sat next to after finishing his fitness routine. We had some chat. While we were talking, Julie came again with another guy.

His name, BEN (not sure if it's real name, thou).

He again asked me the same questions as what Julie and the manager asked. I was sort of annoyed and just asked him why are they keep on asking the same questions, but still answered some of the questions. Then, he said what's stopping me from joining it now. I told him I need to try first. Then, he offered me a very good deal, RM100 per month. Zero joining fee and zero admin fee.

I was really tempted, but then I know I should not rush into anything. Lessons I learned from previous mistakes. I told that guy, let me try the free trial first. He started the usual sales pitch that if I don’t join now they won’t be any more zero joining fee and admin fee. They’ll charge the usual fee. I just told them, this is just the usual sales technique, but I’m sure you guys will give me the zero joining and admin fee towards the end of the trial. He so arrogantly told me that he will make sure to put a note in the system that I should not get any zero joining fee and admin fee if I join later.

Then, he asked me why do you need a free trial since you have done free trial at other fitness centre. All gym also are the same. I told him that different fitness centre have different environment and feel to it. But, he was keep on saying that gym are still gym and you don’t need to try them if you are serious about health. He started to brag that he had worked at 4 different fitness centre, California Fitness, Celebrity Fitness, Fitness First and now at True Fitness. So, all the fitness centre are the same. I told him, it’s not the same. Fitness First have freestyle area, they don’t have it. Then, he asked Julie to show me the freestyle area which is just next to free weight area. I wasn’t bothered to check it out because I know they don’t have it and didn’t want to explain to him about the Fitness First freestyle concept.

I wasn’t so bothered about his arrogance or rudeness in his voice as I was thinking of the offer. My friend who is an existing member told me to try the free trial first and decide later. Don’t have to rush. So, I told Ben, I’ll try the trial first. He started to tell me, “why should I give you free trial?”. If he wants, he don’t have to give 2 weeks. He can just refuse to give. I was like what the heck he’s talking. I just told him, if he’s not going to give free trial, what the heck is he wasting my time here. Then he asked why do you need such long trial, even a one day trial is sufficient to know about the centre. I told him not necessary. Different people have different routines. What if a person separate his workout to chest, arms, back, leg, shoulder and abs? He would need some time to assess it..

Too make it short, I’ll go to the really rude and arrogant part of it, which occurred towards the end.

My friend:, “He should try first before deciding. There’s nothing wrong in trying out different fitness centre to decide.”
Ben: “You better don’t listen to your friend. If you get stroke, he’ll take his own sweet time to think which hospital is the best, and by that you’ll die”.
Me (pissed off): “Look here, he’s my friend, and I know him very well. Choosing a fitness centre and choosing a hospital is totally different thing. It’s common sense, to bring a person to the nearest hospital if a person get stroke and I know that’s what my friend will do”.
Ben: “Both also are the same. They are about health”
Me: “Your statement is a fallacy. They are not the same”.
Ben: I don’t care if it’s a philosophy or whatever crap.
My friend: Don’t be a jerk.
Ben: Who’s jerk? You are jerk.
My friend: Look here. I’m an existing member. I’m taking personal trainings sessions. Spent a lot of money here. Is this how you treat your customer?
Ben: I don’t care if you are a customer or not. So, what?
Me: Are you going to give me the free trial or not?
Ben: You people only know to do free trial here and there. You all won’t join any of the places. Even the story that you are a member at MuayFit might be bullshit.
Me: What do you care if I’m a member at MuayFit or not?
Ben: Gimme your phone number? I want to check with MuayFit whether you are a member or not. Oh, I have your phone number. I’ll call and check.
Me: Who are you to check?
Ben: I’m have been working at 4 different gym. I can call and check whatever detail I want.

Me and my friend just stood up and left the place. Before I left, I saw his manager was sitting somewhere behind us and I just raise my voice and told Ben,
“You have lost a potential customer”.

We left the place, and came back there as my friend wanted to make a complaint with the manager. He was like cool and wasn’t bothered about losing potential customer. He never even say sorry on that guys behalf. He just told my friend he’ll look into it and jot down his membership id.

If he can treat an existing customer like that, I wouldn't join True Fitness even if it's RM10.
