A bank’s chief cashier has pleaded not guilty to stealing RM910,000 from the bank at Bishop Street on Oct 18.

The accused, Mohd Nasir Ismail, 46, was released on a RM8,000 bail on Wednesday.

Deputy public prosecutor Pang Chun Keat had initially called for RM10,000 bail but the accused’s counsel, R.S.N. Rayer, asked to reduce bail to RM5,000 as his client had four school-going children.

The magistrate’s court settled for RM8,000 and fixed Nov 22 for submission of documents

The suspect, along with an administrative assistant, was detained by police on Oct 20 for allegedly stealing a total of RM1.5mil from the bank’s strongroom.

The plot was uncovered midway when bank officials discovered the missing money and lodged a police report on Oct 19.

A packet containing RM90,000 was found on the lower ground floor of the bank while another packet of RM500,000 was recovered on the second floor.

Another RM860,000 was later retrieved from a bowling bag at a bowling alley in Sungai Petani.

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...5948&sec=nation

Arab to invest Billions in Aluminium Projects

PUTRAJAYA: Billions of ringgit in investments are in the pipeline from Abu Dhabi, and are set to flow into two major projects in Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak.

The emirate’s investment unit, Mubadala Development Co, is teaming up with the Government-owned 1Malaysia Development Bhd to participate in property and aluminium ventures in the two areas.

At the signing of two agreements yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the first would pave the way for Mubadala’s involvement in the Kuala Lumpur International Financial District (KLIFD) real estate development, which is estimated to cost more than RM26bil.

In the second tie-up, Najib added, Mubadala, through Mubadala Industry, was looking to commit up to US$7bil (RM21.7bil) in long-term projects in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

“We are happy that 1MDB and Mubadala see each other as partners in driving strategic initiatives for the long-term sustainable economic development of their countries,” he said.

Mubadala Real Estate and Hospitality (MREH) has agreed to work with 1MDB to explore the potential joint development of key strategic projects within the 34ha KLIFD, near Jalan Tun Razak.

“The full scope of MREH’s participation in the projects to be located within the KLIFD will be finalised in 2011, following completion by 1MDB of the KLFID master plan,” Mubadala and 1MDB said in a joint press statement.

KLIFD will provide a state-of-the-art home for important banking and financial entities.

It is meant to further cement Malaysia’s position as a leader in global Islamic finance.

“The KLIFD is critical in the development of a globally competitive financial sector that will promote economic growth, attract foreign direct investment and create jobs,” Najib said.

“We will invite, encourage and persuade the local and international financial community to work with us, not only in shaping Kuala Lumpur as a global financial centre but also to benefit from what the KLIFD has to offer.”

Najib said the potential investment in SCORE, which is for the development of a major initiative in the aluminium sector based on hydro power, was expected to generate spillover economic activities in multiple sectors and create more than 10,000 jobs during construction and 2,000 specialist jobs.

Specific details of these projects, all of which would be led by 1MDB, would be available in due course, he added.

Mubadala and 1MDB said they were starting preliminary assessment work on the SCORE project.

In his speech, Mubadala chief executive officer and managing director Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak said Abu Dhabi viewed Malaysia as an ideal investment platform linking the emirate to this region.

“The Abu Dhabi government is very optimistic about Malaysia’s prospects as an investment destination of choice,” said Khaldoon, who is also special envoy to the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

At the same event, Najib, who is also chairman of the board of advisers of 1MDB, announced that 1MDB posted a net profit of RM425mil for its first financial year ended March 31.

Source : http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...2866&sec=nation

God creates animal for experiments!

A Malaysian minister has defended an Indian company's plans to build an animal testing medicine lab in his state, saying that God created monkeys and rats for experiments to benefit humans.

The plans by India's Vivo BioTech Ltd. to set up a biotechnology centre in southern Malacca state has come under fire by activists because it will conduct tests on dogs and primates to make medicines. The activists say Malaysia has no regulations on animal research, which could lead to test subjects being abused.

But Malacca Chief Minister Mohamad Ali Rustam said the lab had received state approval, and animal testing was necessary to make drugs. The project is still in the planning phase.

"God created animals for the benefits of human beings. That's why he created rats and monkeys ... We cannot test on human beings," he said. "This is the way it has to be. God created monkeys, and some have to be tested."

He said Malaysian agencies, such as the wildlife department, could monitor that the animals were not abused and proper procedures followed. He said eating animals could also be seen as cruel, and yet it was widely accepted.

Vivo inked a 450 million ringgit ($141 million) joint-venture deal in January to build the biotechnology centre, including laboratories where trial medicines will be tested on animals. Its partners are state government-owned Melaka Biotech Holdings and local firm Vanguard Creative Technologies.

In a joint statement last month, Malaysia's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection and the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments decried the project because Malaysia has no laws protecting the welfare of animals used in experiments.

The group opposed the proposed facility for "both ethical reasons and the lack of scientific validity of using animals in testing."

The groups has submitted a protest letter to the government, urging it to halt the project.

Source : http://www.whatsonxiamen.com/news12510.html

Dazzling meteor showers from tonight

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR: There will be a dazzling display of shooting stars between Thursday (midnight) and Friday (dawn) as a meteor is expected to streak across the sky.

The Perseids Meteor Shower might also create a fascinating light rainfall not to be missed, said Prof Mohd Zambri Zainuddin of Universiti Malaya's department of physics.

He said meteor observers could spot about 100 streaks of meteor light across the sky hourly, at or near the shower peak which could well be after midnight. Mohd Zambri said that many were unaware of this event, adding that some were even ignorant of the Perseids Meteor Shower.

"The people should come forward to view these shooting stars as they could learn the process of how and why this shower happens," he said.

Mohd Zambri said various campaigns and seminars should be held to create awareness on the meteor streak. He explained that a meteor showered the sky when comets got closer to the Sun and fragmented into small particles, which in turn, created many bright meteors.

According to a statement issued by a resort in Bagan Lalang, Sepang, observers could watch the Perseids meteors after midnight tomorrow until dawn. "The sky conditions will be excellent for observing the meteor shower after midnight when the waxing cresent moon is already set," it said.

A member of Star Hunter Astronomical Society, Chin Wei Loon, said the two-day activity by Perseid meteors would be interesting because only northern hemisphere countries such as Malaysia, could experience the event.

"Actually, we can see meteors daily, with five to 10 streaks an hour, but not as much as the Perseids meteors which burst into streaks all over the sky," he said.

Chin said there were another two major meteor showers, namely Leonids and Germinids. Leonids lights up the sky every 33 years while Germinids occurs every December.

And when asked when can i check, they say it will be only available next week because "the system" is down and will take 1 week to repair (this time the tone a bit "gertak")

System down or people maintaining it down? is it because of Puasa time???

Proton vs Perodua

QUOTE

Once, there was a family known as Malaysia. In 1985, they were blessed with their first born, Proton. The family loved Proton all they can.

They gave Proton everything. They protected Proton from the bigger boys in Kindergarden. They told Proton, “You’re young, you need protection from them. It’s okay to make mistakes, you’re young. Even if you don’t learn from mistakes…it’s okay…you are young.”

Proton became spoilt. He always depended on parents and used up all his allowance on useless things. When he had to do his chores, he paid people to do it and the work is lousy, causing the parents having to call repairmen to fix all the mess that he made.

Anyway, when Proton was 10 (but he still acted like he is 1 or 2 years old), he had a younger brother, Perodua. At first, everyone thought.

This younger brother will be like Proton. Anyway, this new baby was more handsome and looks smarter than Proton. Malaysia knew there is a possibility Perodua could be smarter than proton. Since they love Proton so much, they decided that Perodua can only learn a few things. Cannot learn the same thing as Proton. This is so that Perodua wouldn’t Beat Proton at what Proton is doing.

Although Perodua was also protected by Malaysia, he learn to be independent very fast. He made good friends with Daihatsu, who had An elder brother Toyota. The two of them helped Perodua in everything. Perodua, being independent and smart, learned a lot and in a short while, was becoming as good as, if not better, than Proton.

Malaysia realized that Perodua was becoming better than his brother.Although proud of Perodua, they still love Proton best. They paid Lotus which is older and well known worldwide) to be friends with Proton.

Using this advantage, Proton mentioned Lotus every time he wanted to Tell people about himself. On this own, he was still the same.

Moreover, Proton is always not updated. When doing his work, he Still uses the typewriter and refuses to use the computer. Perodua, so much younger, used the computer, with broadband for his work. Perodua was improving so much that Toyota has assigned him with his work, codename Avanza.

2005. Proton is 20 years old, Perodua only 10. It was obvious that Perodua was the more successful of the two siblings. What is worse,Proton said he still need his parents to help him for another 10 years.

He still need to protection from the big boys. In May 2005, Perodua was about the show Malaysia his best work so far…codename Myvi. Proton, being jealous…quickly came up with an unprofessional remark about Perodua’s work and show his work at the same time as Perodua on purpose.

The future of Malaysia and her two kids are still unknown. But it would be obvious that Perodua will shine, leaving Proton crying. It would be wonder if in 2015, Proton will ask Malaysia for another 10 years of Help and protection…maybe this time…protection from Perodua as well

……….THE END

Thanks - http://ahkong.net/proton-vs-perdua

Google Wave

Google announced that it is shutting down the Google Wave service due to lack of enough patronage.

Google Wave, the online software application which was described as a new web application for real-time communication and collaboration, was launched by Google in May 2009. But Wave didn't get the user adoption they desired.

On Wednesday, Aug 4 Google announced the suspension of standalone Wave development and the intent of maintaining the web site at least for the remainder of the 2010.

"Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. So we don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects," said Urs Holzle, Google’s senior vice president of operations.

The Wave technology will be gradually included in other Google projects and the company will also release tools to 'liberate' user content from Wave.

Google Wave was a web-based service, computing platform, and communications protocol designed to merge e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking.

Google Wave, which created waves in the way people communicated online, was no doubt a great concept. Inspite of its usefulness and capabilities, the number of active users dropped drastically and finally Google announced to axe on Wave.
