Reactivate HSBC account from overseas

Hi, quick question.

My Malaysian HSBC account has been deactivated due to inactivity and I want to reactivate it, but I live in the UK. I managed to speak to them on the phone and they said I need to reactivate it in person at a MY HSBC branch. Is there any way to reactivate it from abroad as I won't be in Malaysia for several months, and I can't renew my existing time deposits online as my account is inactive.

How long is your commute?

I've just accepted a job which means a commute of almost 2 hours each way. I was wondering how long people on here commute on average. I'm guessing for KL folk it's going to be 1h-1h30 with the state of the roads in the mornings and evenings.

BTW apparently commuting over 90min each way is officially an "extreme commute".

Import tax rate for musical instruments

I'm looking at importing a saxophone as the local prices are ridiculous. I assume that there's a 99% chance I'll be asked to pay tax on it so does anyone know what the tax rate is? I have a figure of 30% in my head but can't remember where I heard that.

Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this.

I've got a Maxis fibre (10mb) connection (the type that is bundled with Astro IPTV). I've got a DNS subscription which I use to access geographically restricted content on the internet. I want to set up the router with the DNS settings so I can access the content with all the devices connected at home, but I can't find the right settings in the router menu. Could someone offer me some assistance on how to do this?

Also, would it be worth getting a static IP with Maxis? How do I go about getting one?

XBMC recommendations

I'm looking for an XBMC device or something similar to help me watch the following:

Netflix (US)
Hulu (US)
BBC iPlayer (UK)
ITV (UK)

I've got a DNS subscription which works fine for all of these on my computer. I now want to find a device that will allow me to watch them on the TV instead. After some research I reckon I need an XBMC box (I would use an Apple TV but I won't be able to get UK and US apps on the same device) which I assume I can install the above apps on.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a device which will work for me? If it has Wifi it would be good also.

Left my iPad at Ho Chi Minh City Airport

Unfortunately I left my iPad in a coffee shop in the departure area of Ho Chi Minh Airport on Friday. I doubt I will get it back, but does anyone know who I can contact regarding lost and found at the airport? I have tried e-mailing tsnairport@tsn.com yesterday but haven't had any response yet. The only airport website I can find is all in Vietnamese so not much help.

I appreciate any advice!

Internet security for online banking/shopping

I have never paid for anti-virus. Recently I installed Avast free on my computer and had a look at it's paid Internet Security package. It says it offers protection for online banking and online shopping, both of which I do on a regular basis.

Is it worth paying for a comprehensive security package to protect me when banking/shopping online or am I probably fine just sticking with the bog-standard free antivirus? I'm tempted, but think I might just be falling for the clever advertising...over to you.

How to setup Netflix/online streaming on my TV

Hi all, I'm planning on setting up Netflix on my TV but want to find out the best way to do this. Currently I have a laptop connected to my TV with a VPN installed which lets me watch BBC iplayer and other uk tv catchup websited but it isn't a very elegant solution.

Is there a device I can buy which can be setup with Netflix/iplayer apps etc which connects to my TV and can be controlled by a remote? I also need to somehow get my VPN installed on it (I am using StrongVPN). Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm hearing things like XBMC and AppleTV but I don't know how they work.

Also if I can stream my ripped DVDs/music from my PC to the TV that would be excellent too.

Personalised number plate on car

Hi,

I want to change the number plate on my car. I've got a WSJ-plate but I'd like to change it to a BHA-plate. I don't really mind what the numbers are, I just want BHA.

Does anybody know what the procedure is for this? I've only got experience of doing this in the UK. In the UK the DVLA (equivalent of the JPJ) have a database of de-registered number plates you can purchase from them. They then run you through the process of de-registering your current plate and registering the purchased plate onto your car. Is it a similar system in Malaysia?

Have the JPJ decided what the new series of plates will look like after WYY xxxx? I'm guessing they will just swap the numbers and letters around (i.e. xxxx WYY) to keep it at 7 digits.

Wireless connection between laptop and TV

I've been doing some research into how to connect my laptop to my TV without involving wires. I don't have Intel WiDi so unfortunately can't use that, but I've stumbled across these devices which transmit your video signal wirelessly (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/streamhd_wireless_pc--tv_1080p_display_adapter_review).

My question is, has anyone on here used such a device? If so, does it really work as advertised? I've subscribed to a VPN to watch UK television but need some permanent way to connect my PC to my TV.

More importantly, where can I pick up one of these (or similar) in or around KL? I'm planning on taking a visit to Digital Mall or Lowyat Plaza but I wouldn't even know where to begin trying to find one of these in there.

Would some kind soul mind helping me out?

After doing a bit of research I'm interested in buying a Yamaha RX-V371 amplifier and a 5.1 speaker set to go with it (thinking of the NS-P20). On the Yamaha Malaysia website the two items are listed at MYR 2,290 (http://my.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/hometheater-systems/home-theater-package/home_theatre_in_a_box/htb-371p20/?mode=model#tab=product_lineup).

ould someone recommend a reputable shop in or around KL which I could buy these items from?

The Malaysian Yamaha site price also seems a bit steep (i.e. a fair bit more expensive than abroad; the same equipment is about MYR1,700 in the UK) so anywhere that sells the equipment at a lower price would be great too.

Hi,

I bought this box set at Speedy's in Mid Valley a few days ago for serious money. I was quite disappointed with the way the DVDs were stored inside, which got me thinking. Could these DVDs be fake? I've uploaded some photos so you can have a look:

There are extra empty folders inside the case too which seems odd. And the actual discs don't have a standard picture printed on them. It's like they've been taken from different single boxes.

What do you people think?

Help me choose a company car

Hello,

I've put so many miles on my current Camry in the past 2 years that I'm required to get a new company car (poor me ). My budget is "Camry 2.0 G or equivalent" which according to Toyota's website is about MYR 162,000 (including options).

I'm totally happy with my current camry 2.0 G (WS plate) and am tempted just to get another one (this time with that new GPS thing) but wouldn't mind some input as to what else is out there in my price range.

My criteria are:
It is comfortable in the rear.
It seats 4 comfortably.
Decent boot space.
Has decent pickup (around as good as a 2.0 camry).
It isn't French.

Any suggestions? Cheers.
