I started this post two years ago because of COVID-19 outspread, and that time Folding@home by Stanford University announced they are taking up the fight against COVID-19. After two years people come and go, but the fight is never end. While GPU price is getting lower, I would like to welcome you all to join the fight.

What is Folding@home?
Folding@home is a distributed computing program launch by Stanford University since the year 2000, aimed to study the folding of protein to find causes and cure for multiple diseases. The simulation of protein folding is a very computational heavy task. Instead of getting gigantic cost supercomputer, they distributed this program to the volunteers around the world to donate their PC resources to help. In return, donor will receive points for ranking purpose. [Folding@home Homepage]

A word of warning though: if you choose 'Express Install' the program will install in a manner that will automatically start it whenever your PC is running. If you are happy to donate a bit of power and your computer's reserves to solving this problem, go ahead and select that option. Setup Identity:
Name: For name, you can use any unique name to represent yourself, or a common name to remain anonymous.

Passkey: Passkey is not a must, but I highly recommended you all to get one for yourself. Passkey is a unique key that identified it's you when two or more person uses the exact same name. In addition, using a Passkey granted you bonus point. All you need to do is fold 10 work unit with your Name & Passkey. After that, you will start to receive bonus point on your following work unit. Things to know before start folding:
1.) This is a beta program, you might encounter bugs, hang, restart, or even BSOD while folding. Don't panic, if you find your PC is not stable for it, just stop it.
2.) Since it uses your idle CPU, or GPU, or both CPU & GPU resources, it can heat up your PC, and raise your electricity bill.
3.) It might not necessary to get a work unit related to COVID-19 for you, but other diseases. In other word, you were still contributing your effort towards other diseases.

It's all about volunteering. Okay, don't get discourage, we have member folding strong here (our team is generating 9M points per day (PPD), when I'm writing this post). after browsing the folding@home official news blog:

an idea come out to promote folding@home to lowyat forumer, as illustrated below:
create a small folding@home section/widget to show the Current PPD of our folding team on lowyat forum page, and a folding@malaysia forum link.
(rough design at the first stage)

the main aim of this suggestion is to let more forumer aware about the existence of the folding@home project,
and hopefully more volunteer can join and help out the medical community to find cure for certain diseases.

the main suggested location to place the section/widget is indicated in the red rectangle:

hi, sifu there, i m helping a friend searching for recommendation for his budget RM4k rig + LCD screen + speaker.
his usage are online, movie, music, some 3D rendering and video editing job.
didn't play overclock and rarely gaming.

dameged blocks on harddisk, anyway to rescue?

because previously got error when trying to copy some files,
it stated that cannot copy files, data error or cyclic redundancy error.
so i scan for error and this is the results.
it is a 6 months old WD caviar blue 500GB HDD.

this question is apply on both Intel (LGA775, LGA1156) and AMD (AM3, AM2+, AM2) system.

want to ask, when we push the base clock up, will the PCI clock rise too on both system?
or the motherboard will auto locked it at 33.33MHz?
since PCIe clock can be manually locked at 100MHz.

for example, using Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 (rev. 2.1) on AMD system,
and Asus P5Q Deluxe on Intel system.

because i can't found the PCI clock synchronization mode on these motherboard.
but i can found the PCI clock synchronization mode on Asus P5B Deluxe.

now the situation is like this, there are 2 setup here:

setup 1:
2 x Intel Xeon E5506 Quad-Core (2.13GHz, 4MB, 4.8GT/s QPI) [not support Intel Hyper-Threading Technology]
Asus Z8PE-D12 dual LGA1366 socket server mainboard
6 x 2GB DDR3 1333 = 12GB RAM

setup 2:
1 x Intel Core i7 950 Quad-Core (3.06GHz, 8MB, 4.8GT/s QPI) [support Intel Hyper-Threading Technology]
Asus P6T
6 x 2GB DDR3 1333 = 12GB RAM

other components assume is the same.

setup 1 is something like workstation with 2 lower clock speed cpu.
setup 2 is desktop setup with 1 higher clock speed cpu.

now i want to ask which setup is more powerful for some engineering work?
such as using matlab to do 10000*10000 matrices calculation,
and solving 2000 nonlinear second order PDE.

currently i m using OEM creative x-fi xtremegamer fatality pro series sound card with beyerdynamic DT231.

when i didnt play any music file in pc, and i increase the windows volume to 100%,
then i heard got the noise sound: shiiiiiiiiii.......... in the background,
is it normal or got problem?
it not suppose to be 100% silent?
