rewiring the whole car

hi, normally when it comes to restoring performance of a 10 year old car, we send the engine for overhaul, but has anyone "overhauled" the wiring system? after 10 years, the wires got wear and tear - lights dimmer, power window slowed down. the wires especially in the bay are hardened by the engine heat.

so im looking to rewiring the whole car, the same way we restore the engine. anyone can recommend a place, share their experience or gives any comments?

thanks

oil light slow to go off

hi, the mechanic told me that the check oil light of the car going off quite slow, around 2 seconds after engine started where it should goes off immediately after engine started.

there are noticeably loud tapping noise during this time, then the noise goes down to normal after light goes out. he said this indicates oil being pumped from the sump very slow that during start up the head does not receive oil which induces the noise, and this maybe due to sludge or as he said "sumbat"

he said this could lead to engine jam and offered me to clean them by tearing down the engine.

how true is this statement? is it as dangerous as he said?

if this is true, will engine flush works? i do this regularly but lately i have been slacking in this routine due to tight budget

thanks in advance

hard engine break in worked

hi, i just want to share the result of hard engine break-in on my car which some of us may have read over the internet. It sounds controversial as compared to the traditional method of slow drive for first 1000km,

I decided to do hard engine break-in as recommended by motoman, i was convinced by the explanation and evidence provided thus i proceeded.(http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm)

recently i did compression and leak down test at N1 racing, sunway and the result was excellent. i didnt think of taking photo proof and detailed recording since i only wanted to check the status of the engine, so i only did rough and general recording for personal reference. i only thought of sharing it days after i have done the tests, otherwise i would have prepared proper recordings with photos

Compression test result:

i got an average of 180 PSI across all 3 cylinders (kelisa)

in general, results may be interpreted as below:

135 PSI and above indicates excellent compression,
below 100-120 PSI means bad,
below 85 PSI is extremely bad (severe engine mechanical problem)
but most important is to have almost same readings across all cylinders, less than 15% variation of pressures are acceptable

references to the above are below:

http://www.gregsengine.com/cylinder-compression-testing.html
http://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford/compre...sion_test_2.php

based on the above guide, the engine excelled the compression test which underwent hard break in method.

Leak Down Test result:

all were below 5% leak. But human error (mistakes in reading meter) may happened, therefore to be safe, i will say that im very sure that the leaks for all cylinders were below 10%, this is because i did not look carefully, just needed to know that the engine is ok

leak down test result interpretation:

1. Less than 5% - You either did something wrong or have one hell of a nice tight engine.
2. 5% to 10% - Great to good. You should have no worries.
3. 10% to 20% - Your motor may still run ok, but it isn't at it's best. Parts may be starting to wear out....keep an eye on it and test it more regularly.
4. 20% to 30% - It may be (and probably is) time for a rebuild.
5. Greater than 30% - You have some major engine issues that need to be addressed.

reference:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-e...wn-testing.html

Conclusion:

the engine compression were superb, i needed the compression to be 135 PSI to excel and i got 180 PSI. They were way beyond the minimum baseline of being "excellent".

therefore, judging from the excellent compression, i can safely say that it is also possible that all cylinders were below 5% leak in leak down test, otherwise it may be hard to achieve 180 PSI if the leaks were high

the engine was overhauled and broken in on july 2011, and it ran both tests above in april 2014, means after 2 years 9 months, the engine is still tight.

Although, since i did not do testing for traditional breaking in method for side by side comparison, it is immature to conclude that hard break-in is better than the traditional.

But one thing for sure is hard breaking-in the engine will give you promising results and there is no harm in trying it, this is the main reason i posted this topic, to remove doubts on engine hard break-in method

My engine never makan oil till today, although to say that my engine performed better than those being traditionally broken-in are baseless as i have no proof of that.

knowing that hard break in method worked wonder is enough for me

Credit goes to mr. motoman for his daring ideas and ballsy statements, and to N1 racing for providing the tests.
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

hope this benefits

Alternator & Starter Overhaul Shop

hi,

i recently had problems with my alternator not charging consistently and i wanted to save money from buying new one. I stumbled upon this workshop in Jalan Ipoh where they rebuilt and replace faulty alternator parts.

It is a good place to overhaul your old alternator and starter just the way we all overhaul our old engine

The boss is a silent old chap but very polite, i monitored his work and he was thorough and do things orderly, not very common in younger workshops we see these days where everything is about profit and fame, but working attitude kaput.

Due to his excellent work and experience, i decided to share his shop info here, FYI i am not taking any sort of commission, just a chap who praises a good old school workmanship and working attitude

The worker told me almost all alternators can be fixed without buying a new one as the fault is usually due to malfunctioning parts only, replacing it will make it as good as new.

replacing old whining, squealing alternator bearing with new one:

the brushes of my 10 years alternator has worn off, no wonder it causes electrical inconsistency, compare below between new brushes and the worn ones:

i decided to refurbish my starter as well, the brushes was ok but the bush has worn out causing it to vibrate, u can see the scratch black marks on the plate due to scuffing from the starter body when it vibrates, this happens when we crank the engine, anyway they replaced it:

Cost was RM90 for alternator brushes and bearing including labour for removing and reinstalling the altenators, RM45 for starter bush including labour, not bad.

Location:

it is located nearby kem batu kentomen, jalan ipoh at the side of the main road

those coming from roundabout jalan kuching:
a) at roundabout, enter jalan ipoh
b) proceed straight passing through several traffic lights, u will find a caltex station
c) proceed further ahead until u see a signboard going to kem batu kentomen on the left, proceed straight but drive slow after this junction as the shop is nearby already, most people missed it
d) the shop is located besides furniture store, u can see a lot of batteries at the workshop front

Hope this helps

Rear on-wheel balancing

Hi,

i want to provide information for those looking to balance front and rear wheels using on wheel balancing method. I have been going to this workshop for sometimes now and it is excellent. The boss is a friendly chap, I paid RM60 for alignment and front-rear on wheel balancing

They provide rear wheel on-wheel balancing which is quite rare to be found in tyre shops in KL. Check out the pictures and videos below for reference.

This is the machine being used to balance rear wheels, the round steel at the bottom of the machine is used to spin the rear wheels:

Rear wheel being spun by the spinner:

Rear wheel balancing in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVDVnO5sSLc...feature=mh_lolz

I forgot the name of the tyre shop but the approximate location is:
32 Jalan Sri Selayang
68100 Batu Caves

It is located next to spare parts shop and taman selayang post office, u will see there is only one tyre shop on that row

hope this helps
