Non-Academic Career Options for PhDs in NanoE

Hi All,

I am pursuing my phd in nanoelectronic materials in a public university in singapore.

Since there are limited positions/high competitions in obtaining a faculty position, i am looking at non academic jobs. Besides research related jobs, i hope to venture more into operation/sales & marketing of high tech industries.

Do you think it is possible? Any friends/colleagues of you who do that?

Hi,

From the offer letter of MyMaster scholarship, I am eligible to obtain a lump-sum RM3000 as my master thesis allowance. I have sent the hard-bound copy of my thesis to their office with the required documents and forms. I just feel like my stuff just gone down to the drain as I don't get any news/acknowledgement saying that they have receive my documents and my application is under process.

Izzit me who don't get any email reply/can't get through their office with phone calls?

why non-engineering degree cannot enter sales engineering field?

as sales engineer don sells consumers and small small product... how r they gonna expand their customer network?

lets say medicine and drugs sales rep they can walk-in into clinics...

like lets say sales engineers who sell lubricant oils for manufacturing machines

or heat exchangers, power transmission systems, machinery parts, or some aluminum/plastic raw materials/industrial used IC chips..

how they gonna find the customers? wouldn't it be more difficult?

UM and UPM provide MBA .. the class starts on weekdays 630, which is really unpractical ..

well unlike post grad in engineering, which I've done...
PhD in business needs like at least 12 credit hours fulfilment
normally, 630-930, which is quite impossible for working ppl to make it on time

investment banking job for engineering quali~

I am currently doing my master in engineering, but realized that I am more interested in investment banking related jobs (of course, lots of twists and turns involved before this decision was made)... I am afraid that they would question my ability... therefore I've thrown USD1270 to enroll for CFA level I... T.T... Exam june 2013

Would banking line accept ppl who has engineering master as trainees... I am afraid of those questions like "you have studied engineering till master level, why still consider banking line?"

Hi,

I previously ordered 2 daikin air cond (1.0 hp) and 1 hitachi air cond (1.5hp) from jaya jusco, taman maluri around 6th April 2010. I have paid cash of total amount nearly RM4200. i expect to take at most a week to complete the order and proceed to installation of air conditioner. However, I called almost everyday but always get the same answer, the 2 daikin 1.0hp have arrived but not the hitachi. Until 15th April 2010, which is around 9 days, 1 week plus, I received a call that the hitachi is still pending and the staff talking to me suggested me to change the model to daikin 1.5 hp. Without any options, I have to say yes and during that day itself i rushed to jusco after work to deal with the progress. The staff there arranged me the delivery and installation date on 21st April 2010. Besides, on the spot they call your air cond installation contractor, Ms Yap, to confirm with her the date, which I believe she has nodded with the arranged date.

This morning, I have called jusco once again, after nearly 1 hour of calling finally i got somebody to answer, saying that the daikin 1.5 hp is still out of stock! If they knew they couldn't get the stock on time, why can't they just call me earlier to make further arrangement? Why must wait until I CALL THEM then only they check and inform me? Please understand that I have already applied for leave to monitor the air cond installation.

The work quality, efficiency and attitude are highly doubted, not to mention I have waited for nearly 30 minutes in the air conditioner department on 930pm, 6th April 2010, I can't find anyone approach me. No one at all! I have to walk around and go around to the stationery department to ask for the handphone number of any staff from electrical department to help me, and every time I call the helpdesk number, 0392856700, 0392855700, it takes nearly 1 hour of continuous calling for me to get somebody to answer the phone. Helpdesk?

I used to believe Jusco is a Japanese oriented Shopping Mall which emphasis much about work quality, efficiency and services. I believe I have to think twice on that.

materials engineering?

I am a 3rd year materials engineering student doing my internship program... for my university, our materials engineering is more to electronic devices and semiconductors... ever since i have entered this course.. i search through jobstreet but non of the position there specifically asked for materials engineering fresh grads = =... when i tell my relatives about materials engineering their response was like.. erm... chemical materials?

now my question is....

where is our futures for materials engineering?

like what company or which industry we can enter...

any seniors here?

if i personally prefer civil and construction.. even M&E... can i apply it even i am not in that major?
