she said during a presentation of the findings here yesterday.<br /><br />The study titled &quot;Delayed marriages and child bearing among the young and mature and its implications to marketing and advertising&quot;, also revealed that while the current generation women are getting married later than their parents, they have not lost faith in marriage altogether.<br /><br />Yong said faith in the institution of marriage remained, but the urgency and importance to be married has declined.<br /><br /><br />&quot;Although most of the participants in the study seemed to agree that singlehood is good, an overwhelming 84 per cent of the people polled still long for a family of their own.&quot;<br /><br />Yong added that Malay women tend to get married earlier, with the average age for marriage at 24 years, followed by Indians at 25 and Chinese at 27.<br /><br />The study also revealed that women are fast outgrowing gender stereotypes as compared to men, with half of the women participating in the survey expressing their intent to voluntarily share household and children related expenses.<br /><br /><br />But at the same time, they expect men to share responsibilities and household chores including cooking and childcare, which are traditionally categorised as women&#39;s tasks.<br /><br />Couples are also delaying the age of when to have their firstborn due to rising costs of living.<br /><br />It was reported in April last year that Malaysia was likely to reach an ageing nation status by 2035, with the number of people above the age of 60 years reaching 15 per cent of the population.<br /><br />Welfare Department deputy director general (operation) Halijah Yahaya had said statistics showed that the percentage of ageing people here was on the increase.<br /><br />&quot;In 2000 the number of elderly people were 1.45 million or 6.2 per cent of the total population, in 2009 the number increased to 2.03 million or 7.1 per cent of the total population,&quot;
