Built-in NB DVD-ROM spoilt, how to reformat HDD?

My notebook DVD-ROM is spoilt and I want to reformat the HDD. I have an external USB DVD writer (requires main power supply not from nb) and a USB flash drive. I can't use the external DVD writer to run the recovery disk as it won't boot from it. Changing the BIOS boot sequence seems not to won't work. I think there's no boot option from USB only floppy as it's an old nb. And I don't have a floppy disk. How to reformat and use the recovery disk that comes from the nb manufacturer? Can use the USB flash drive? How? Thanks.

Recovery & Application CD used on another nb model

I'm thinking of using the existing 'Recover & Application CD' that came with old existing nb on a new same brand but different model nb. This sole CD contain applications & drivers and Win XP Home Edition.

I'd like to know if the XP can be installed on the new nb as on the CD readme.txt it indicated that the CD may only be used on the model of nb for which it was designed. It cannot be used on other models. Can someone clarify if if works?

Also, would there be problem if I use XP for new nb that is sold with DOS version but which I believe is geared for Vista? I'll use applications & drivers meant for XP downloaded from manufacturer site per the new nb model instead of the existing nb.
