Genuine Ah Long, or an elaborate car theft?

This happened to me in the wee hours of this morning.

As usual I finished work at 1:30AM (working UK hours), reached home at around 2AM and parked my car about 100 meters away from my condominium in Kelana Jaya, due to the lack of insufficient parking lots in the premises.

As I got out of my car and locked it, a BMW parked about 2 cars behind and a Malay man in his mid 20s got out of the car - at first sight I thought he was assisting the driver to parallel park, but as I looked again he was actually walking towards me, and signalling towards me to come over.

I stopped, thinking that he might be asking for directions. The following is what happened:

Me: Err.. bukan. Kenapa?

Man A: Saya Ah Long! Pandai-pandai pinjam RM18k, pastu batang hidung tak nampak! Kereta tu dah betul, WTH 2481! You cakap betul sikit, you nama Leong ke?? Tunjuk IC.

*I whip out my wallet and flash it to his face*

Man A: Ok. You ada kawan nama Leong ke tak? Kerusi kereta kain ke kulit?

Me: Tak kenal siapa Leong. Interior leather, semua Myvi SE memang leather.

Man A: Kau baik jangan tipu saya. Tunjuk.

*Walks back towards car and unlocks the car. At this point of time, Man B, a short retarded looking dude comse out of the BMW. Man A takes the carkeys from my hand and unlocks the steering wheel.*

Man B to Man A: Apamacam?

Man A: Dalam kereta lain. Luar sama je. Dalam kerusi kulit, radio pon lain. Tapi dia boleh tukar, bende camni.

Man B: Meh bawak steering lock. (takes my steering lock and holds it up) KAU CAKAP BAIK SIKIT MANA LEONG??

Me: Sumpah tak kenal bro! Kereta memang saya punya, nak saya tunjuk geran saya boleh tunjuk!

Man A to Man B: Relek, bukan dia. Yang aku nak tau, dia ni kenal tak si Leong tu. Masuk kereta!

*I hesitantly enter the front passanger seat, because Man B was getting all frantic and was eager to crack open my skull. I did not attempt to fight back, as it would make things worse (them thinking that I DO have relations to this LEONG = endless harassment even if I manage to escape). Man A drives off towards Damansara Utama with the BMW following close behind*

During the journey Man A tried to convince me to not be afraid, "kau tak apa, saya nak selesaikan kes ini saja. Bos dah mengamuk ni!" and that he wanted to take me to see his 'boss' to convince that this is a case of stolen/mistaken identity. He introduces himself as "Jefri", saying that he is from Seksyen 26 Shah Alam. He stops after reaching "The Ship" at Damansara Uptown, apparently his Boss is drinking there. After pausing awhile he winds down the window and asked the guys in the BMW to park and hop into my car. While the BMW was parking he asked me to look at his rear windshield, saying that its all shattered because of his failure to collect the money owed. Out came Man B and Man C - at least 6 foot tall, built like Johnny Bravo. He the driver of the BMW. (I was extra glad I did not fight back earlier, he would have broke me into pieces with his fingers).

Off we went. Back to the LDP, and towards the Sprint Highway. Man A was looking for an ATM machine, supposedly to withdraw money to buy his Boss some drinks to soothe his mood. Stopped at Public Bank at Bangsar. Man C (Bob - thats what they called him) got down of the car to find out that the ATMs were out of service (DOH!). Man A asks me if I had RM2k with me. I said no, and Man C asked me for my wallet, wanting to check if I was lying, and to check if I had any connections to any LEONG guy. I obliged. He asked if I had the cash in my bank account, I said its the end of the month, I'm broke. Cards are maxed out and the bank is empty. Fortunately, he believed my words. He returned my wallet, and did not take any cash from it (I had bout 30 bucks in the wallet).

I should mention, that throughtout the journey Man B and Man C were eager to do lotsa nasty stuff ie. kerat badan buang dalam sungai etc. while Man A calms them down, repeatedly saying that I am not the person they are looking for.

The drive continued, from Bangsar, to Tropicana, to unknown places (Man A was lost), and all the while they were taking turns asking me random questions, supposedly to see if I am genuine. Man A was looking frustrated throughout the whole journey, repeatedly saying "iiiisshhhh macam mana niiiii...". He said that if I was brought to see the boss, I'd be dead. Out of the blue, he asks if he can borrow my car for two days. I said I can not do that, as I had no other means to go to work. He asked me to take MC for 2 days. I refused. His reasoning was that he wants to show the car to the boss, and explain that this is a case of mistaken identity, to not harm either me or my car.

The request slowly sounded more like a demand. I gave in. So he decided to drop me home, while he goes off to 'settle the case'. He demanded for my iphone4 as well, to show his Boss that the car wasn't stolen, and that he has my handphone as further proof.

He asks to give him two days to solve this case, and then he will return both my car, and my handphone (drop off the keys and phone to the guardhouse) that I should not report this to the police. He said that by Wednesday, if the car is not anywhere in sight, I could do anything I want (report police etc).

Upon reaching home I immediately called by dad with my housemate's phone(lives in another town), to ask him what to do. We were both in a delimma. Are they just punks who just pulled a fast one, or were they telling the truth? We decided to call the police, fearing that my car would be used for criminal purposes.

5 minutes later a patrol car came and I explained the whole situation. Even the policeman did not know what to do. It was either to lodge a report (if they are real, I'd be marked down if they know that I made the report) or wait for two days (if they are carjacking punks then it'd be hard to track the car down by that time). I decided to report. Immediately the policeman went to his car, and radio-ed patrollers to be alert of my car.

I proceeded to the Kelana Jaya police station, to make my report. This is the part which pissed me off even more than the fact that my car was taken away!

The lady inspector seemed amused that I simply "handed" away my car without resistance. She asked questions like "Why didn't you run?" and "when you were sitting in the front passanger seat, why didn't you jump out of the car to escape?" "Orang kena ragut pun cuba tarik balik beg" "Orang kena rompak pun kejar balik perompak" WTF? ACTION MOVIE MEH? She was very rude throughout, and openly said that she does not believe my story. She said I must have "hutang banyak" or "dah jual kereta" or "dah sorok kereta" to fake an insurance claim.

It was about 6am, when she finally asked me to go to the bank, (Maybank Kajang) and ask for a photostated copy of my car grant, because she was suspiscious. She demanded it to be on her desk by 10am, not a minute late or else she won't follow up with the case. WTF? Not only I've no car and no phone, banks open at 9am and traveltime from KJ to Kajang etc OF COZ I CANT MAKE IT. I agreed nontheless and went home.

I was awakened at 1pm by nonstop housebell ringing. Went out to find a police officer holding a handphone, saying that the lady inspector wants to speak to me. Note that I do not have a house phone, and my handphone was taken, but I never thought they would go to the extent of coming to my doorstep to get in contact with me! She sounded really nice and polite over the phone, asking me to go to the PJ District Headquarters for a photofit at 3pm. I called my dad, (who was on the way to KL to help me out) and told him bout the new updates, and told him it was funny how she was so rude yesterday and suddenly all nice today. He laughed and explained that he sent a lil email to his ex-class mate to help him out. Guess who was it? Datuk Tun Hisan, the S'gor Police Chief. LOL. Good to have contacts in high places:D Did the photofit and now waiting for further updates.

SOOOOOOO after ALLLL that these questions are bugging me non stop;

1) Are they really Ah Long? If they are, and when they find out the police are after them, I'm screwed.
2) How do I ensure safety?
3) If I do get back the car on Wednesday, should I pull back the report?
4) Should I change the numberplate and sell the car? And move out?

Halp.

EDIT: After going through the posts I feel its only right to include the lessons learnt from this ordeal, so that a repeat of this can be avoided.

#1. Avoid parking outside the premises of your residence, and if you have to, park at a place where the guards/neighbours can clearly see/hear if anything's amiss.

#2. Ah Longs these days operate professionally, and if they are looking for someone, they rarely miss.

#3. Even people with luxury cars can be small time crooks.

#4. Unless you are with a group of friends - if suspecting something amiss especially after midnight, buy some time, plan an escape route towards closest safety, and RUN and create as much commotion as possible.

#5. If you are in a situation where you are cornered, toughen up, you do not have to get into a brawl with them but at least portray that you are not afraid of them.

#6. Do NOT attempt to fight back if you are outnumbered, unless you are armed/confident you can take them on/Chuck Norris.

There are many which I might miss, read up the replies!
