Formated windows. Need recover files in C drive

Before that i hibernated my computer and then I tried to boot up my windows it could not start.
My laptop is using windows 7 home premium and it failed to boot up even though i tried to open safe mode to try backup my files but and it didn't work.
So i hesitate and tried to recover my windows while remain my files on D drive so would not be affected.

I'm inexperience in format my windows on my Laptop before so i didn't know what to do. I tried boot up my Asus Windows Recovery and try to recover my corrupted windows.
There are 3 options available for me. I chose the 1st option that recover windows on first partition only.
After recovering my windows, I realize its too late and I notice that it formatted my C drive and my files are gone and back to factory default but except for my D drive files are still there.
There are no old.windows folder or anything, so i realized the files are already deleted.
At the end, i immediately shut down my laptop, and not sure what to do next.

My Question is:
Would it be possible to recover my old files from my previous Windows in C drive and
I need to know what powerful free software to recover my data back and what method i should do to recover my files.
Some people told me to use TestDisk but i'm not sure how to use the program.
Just a few files which is around less than 20GB and most of them are college projects.

Kindly advise me. Thanks
