Piracy an excuse for not making PC games

I recently made this post on KGM speaking about piracy and how Developers are making it thier main excuse for not developing PC exclusive titles anymore.

Have a read at this Link its a page long so I don't wanna post it up here again.

Leave your comments and opinions on that site rather as well so people who visit it can see what your thoughts are.

Hijacked Steam account Precaution notice

Precautions and Protection against Hijackers

Hi all,

About Myself

I've been a regular on Lyn for awhile now, however still not considered a Senior poster on these forums.

I'm also part of the KGM community and have regular gaming sessions with them every now and then.

I was also part of the DOW2 malaysia community which isn't really functioning at the momment sadly...

Introduction and Purpose of this notice:

This notice is basicly a precauion and Guide to handle a Hijacking incident involving 'your' own steam accounts.

I've used steam for several years now (since Hlf2) and I've never really encountered such incidents before recently.

Around 4 days ago, my younger brother encountered a Hijacking incident on his Steam account, having no clue to how to handle this issue I went around seeking help from most of my contacts across my own steam account and also sought out steam support.

I then went further as to seek other people's own experiences across the Steam forums.....only finding them full of complaints and pointless arguments...

I then shared the whole experience over a chat session with a couple of guys on the "KGM" chat room and was suggested to post up some kind of guide or notice to help others when they face this issue or can protect from it. Since as we all know as Gamers...."Information = Power" more than any bullet.

Before we get into the precautions and notice, I'll try to explain alittle bit more about these issues.

What is Hijacking?

I'm not sure whether I got the definition correct or not, however from my understanding it means. Someone who hack forcefully taken over something and your forced into submission due to that takeover.

Hench imagine your playing GTA and you just for car jack......In a online client however, your car would be your account.

This however is not to be confused with Hacking....I believe thats something else (if not nvm).

Reasons of Hijacking

The 'Reasons' aspect of these incidents vary from people to people, some of them want 'money' so they take your account as hostage to receive some kind of ransom.

Another reason would inflicting a form of 'Revenge' for some kind of wrong doing....most likely from an ingame experience that person isn't very happy about (however can vary yet again).

Finnaly the last reason which I found quite common is, Public Nuisance. Some people are demented....when these demented people get thier hands on some form of internet pleasure.....they will become a 'Public Nuisance'.

So what does that mean ?

Basicly, they hijack your account to get a kick out of annoying the crap outta you...they don't want money, no emotion of inacting some fom of revenge....nor do they have some kind of morale value....they just do whatever they want to get a kick outta the experience by making your life a living hell.....For me I give them a nickname called "Serial killers"

Thats basicly some of the definitions which I picked up from reading on the forums over at steam. I'll now get into the important stuff.

Protecting yourself and your steam Account/Client

Precautions READ ME 1st

Read this section before moving on....no point having precautions if you already are infected or have your account in someone elses hands.

Identifying the Threats.

Sometimes when usng steam, we don't Understand what are the threats to our accounts as Steam doesn't really emphasize on the importance of "knowing your enemy"

These 'Threats' are some of issues which I've picked up over the course of my experience in dealing with the issue. I've decided to split them up into two Categories called "Common" and "Rare". They are pretty self explanatory an don't requir a PhD in Com Sci to understand lol. Further more I've decided to include a special tag called 'Rumoured' for incidents which might not be true however is always good to know atleast.

Common Threats.

Blog Sites/Websites

This Threat is similar to any other form of virus or trojan you can get from visiting a Blog or random website that isn't secured....Best to avoid them all entirely (unless you have a really good reason for visiting) Usually Internet protection programs or Anti Virus softwares can pick up these things before they cause harm...however I suggest don't bother going into them unless you know who the owner of the Blog is and what he or she does on thier blog.
Similarly, other sites that allow for downloading software can be just as dangerous....be warned....

Adding Unknown Players "Rumoured"

This is a simple Threat, basicly what happens is you just add someone you don't know into your friends list on steam and suddenly that person tells you that he/she hs taken over your account.
This isn't proved though as in my experience, this wasn't how my brother got jacked.
However it's always good to know who your adding into your steam friends list....after all its not a Social Networking website.

Joining Unknown Steam Groups "Rumoured"

Similar to adding unknown people on your friends list....Joining random groups that you got invited into may also lead to having yourself hijacked.

I'm entirely unsure how this works, but just be sure to find out why a group wants to invite you and who is incharge before joining.

Trainers/Hacking programs

Sometimes using programs such as trainers can have other files attach to them...these include keyloggers which track your typing. Easily avoided....Don't use them.

Rare Threats

Brute Force Hijacking (credits to H@H@)

It involves the person forcefully breaking into your password and literaly destroying the Steam password system to get thier hands on your Account ...an Example would be in watching Die Hard 4.0

My personal opinion is....why the hell would someone even bother with a steam account...just go and hack the US Goverment, they are after all overrated. Plus you have to piss someone greatly off for that person to go through all that trouble.

Operating System Outdated

Some people believe that having an outdated OS can lead to your account being jacked....I personaly don't believe this however I thought I just include it inside th rare section.

I'm unsure of any other Rare threats, however the ones I do have was spoken and argued quite alot on.

Giving away your Username and password

This would be a common mistake, however the person who does this would be a great idiot (some of you may argue that someone young would be capable of doing this....I argue that point by saying...theres something called 'Parental control'....and afterall...if the kid knows enough about games I doubt he be stupid enough to give away his own details willingly)

hench it belongs in the Rare section.

Using Protection

As always, when you use the net...make sure you bring along something to protect yourself with...having a Good anti-virus detector maybe the 1st line of defense....moving from there your have other spyware detectors. However certain spyware detectors are spyware themselves...choose wisely.

Recommendations:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

These are the stuff I use and has kept me safe so far...(hopefully forever until I stop using the net)

Avira Antivirus. (suppose to be the best in the World atm, I use it so I think its good..premium cost 90 RM last time I check..could be cheaper)

Spybot: Search and Destroy (checks for malware, spyware, keyloggers bla bla and its free)

Windows Defender (I have it swtch off most of the time however Sometimes I leave it be)

Firewall (its free, Avira also comes with a firewall that is more sensitive depending on how your set it)

These are the common stuff, which everyone uses including myself....however theres more stuff which can be used however I won't post them as I don't really know how they all work...(I'm gonna leave it to someone who actually does.)

Reclaiming your Steam account through Steam Support.

If you have reach this part of that notice and your actually experiencing a form of Hijacking involving your steam account.....My 1st piece of advice...

*DON'T PANIC*

That sentence has been used in the Book "Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy"...So I'm borrowing it for this guide as well.

Cause its the worst thing you could possibly do at this time.

To begin this guide I'll try to split up the processes in stages, these stages are slightly different from the information you will see on the Steam support page and hopefully speed up the process altogether.

Pre-Analysis Stage:
Try and get a heads up on your current situation by understanding "what has happen?"
Ask yourself these questions.

Do I own another PC/Laptop that has my auto login enabled ?

Do I have a Family/Friend who also uses my account?

Did I leave my login information on someone elses Steam login and set it to auto-sign in accidently ?

These are just some questions you should ask yourself and they basicly follow the simple rule of "Who, When, Why and How?"

If your analysis is presumed to be more severe than a simple "Auto Login" incident, please continue to the next step.

Reporting Stage:

You basicly believe that someone has hijacked your account as none of the above questions make any sense or they do not have a good conslusion attach to them.

So what do you do now ? Follow these steps

Step 1:
*Get on google and search up "Steam Support". If not you can always use this link Steam Support

Step 2:
*Get in there and create an account if you haven't done so (your steam and Steam support accounts are different)

Step 3:
Follow the instructions on that webpage and read carefully. (failing to read all the instructions will delay your response from Steam...so becarefull)
*You don't have to rush anything at this point cause as the control of your account is in someone else's hands now.

Once you finish reading, Click on the "link" called 'Ask a question'

This will bring you to the ticket submission page.

Steam Support Ticket Page

Step 4:
In here, Choose your preffer language, Email address (different from your hacked account), Subject (which is Stolen account or Hijacked account), Category and sub category (Which is Account question/ Hijack or Stolen account)

Make sure you write in something like "Hi, my name is Leo. My account has been stolen...please help bla bla"

Remember be polite, I don't know if steam support uses automated bots for these support stuff however its always good to be polite "especially when your asking for help"

*Submit a Ticket and wait for your turn.

When submitting a Ticket remember to include your:

*NAME

*TIME of Theft (approximate if your unsure)

*LOCATION (timezone difference)

I'm unsure if location is needed however its to make sure they atleast understand how long of a time has passed since they read the ticket....I posted this when I submited the question so its optional if you want to do it ornot.

Steam has been kind enough to share these steps with you in Video. However its not entirely about Hijacking, just on how to use thier ticket system.

Heres the link.

Waiting Stage:

Patience....is required at this point, takes about 2 days for steam to respond...just follow thier instructions on what to do once they reply.

Remember, your not the 1st person to get hit by a Hijacker...so try not to blame everyone or yourself.....and don't submit to the Hijacker....

A guide to understanding what happens during a Hijacking

*The following information is in regards to 'your' account already hijacked by the assailant*

Worst Case Scenario:

As mentioned above, if the hijacker decided to hijack your account and not give any sort of ransom message as to why they have done so....your pretty much 'FUBAR' (if
you don't know what this means ask your parents/friends). If that is your case....quickly contact steam support....what would most likely happen is the hijacker is making use of your account to test out some kind of hacking software and have your Steam Acc banned.....(this is of course the worst case scenario)

Ransom Scenario

This scenario happened to my brother, so I'll try to explain the whole order of things.

Usually these Hijackers are targeting players who have high number of games in thier account (I suspect anything that is above 4).
As they believe that money is involved for them since the owner of the account has high number of games means they own a creditcard or something which allows them to purchase games on steam...(this will of course link to another scenario called Fraudulant purchase)

Once the account has been hijack...they will explore the account for information regarding everything before announcing a ransom....in my brother's case...this guy took about 1 day to identify roughly everything...(however he wasn't very smart to begin with).

After doing his/her short analysis....they will then begin setting up a plan to extract money from thier victim.

Its during this time you should quickly record everything that happens....if they hijacker is using another account to chat to you on steam...be sure to take note of it and submit it along with the chat log into your steam support ticket page.

Whenever chatting with the Hijacker, try to cooporate as much as possible...think logically and keep in control of the situation regardless that the person has already taken over your account. They may provoke anger at you...however do not give in because once they do provoke you into anger..it will just fuel thier wierd fetish even more.

Think Calmly, try to delay your ransom (I manage to delay my brothers for 2 days) and use your time wisely.

Alternatively, if your a smart person...maybe try and analyze your hijacker alittle...for example if hes an idiot...he may try and boast how many different accounts he has taken (those people who cannot bother reclaiming thier accounts) while hes/shes doing that...take Screenshots of them all....and post the up on steam support....sooner or later he will find he has lost maybe 4 or 5 of his stolen accounts.....( I manage to get 3 or 4 of his accounts stolen cause he was so busy boasting)

Or better yet....see if you can pin-point his area of stay...then send someone over and...."ahem" you know what I mean.

Finnaly remember, don't think about revenge until you have taken back your account.

Fraudulant Scenario

This scenario involves a hijacker using your account to cause chaos across your friends list....if you notice this happening...try your very best to contact most of your list and reduce the damage as much as possible.

This can also cause harm to them for example: A hijacker using your account and messaging your friends or group list about a website that is actually a keylogger site....

Recovery is the same as any hijacking incident, however the motive behnd this is for the hijacker to farm as many accounts as possible before stopped by steam support...

Another issue related to this is using your credit card or visa debit card for purchasing games for thier own accounts...this issue can be easily solved and the steps required are similar to the Hijacking steps.

Just make sure you go into gifts category rather than stolen account (better yet make tickets)

These are just some of the scenaio's I've read and encountered...if theres anymore Please feel free to post them up or PM me and I'll add them into this post...(with your creditation)
