ATI 5850 over GTX 460

Hi all, I'd just like to know your opinions on whether it's worth paying about RM160 more than the RM740 a GTX 460 costs to get the ATI 5850? I've read reviews and the 460 is pretty much the mid-range king now, and going the 5850 is kind of like moving into the lower-top end of cards already. I've got RM900 budgeted, but that doesn't mean I have to spend it all if the step up in performance is not really justified

Currently have a 4870 running on a E8400 rig used mainly for medium gaming (SC2, MW2 etc) and HD movie viewing. Problem is, the 4870 is acting up a lot lately and the warranty is already over So just wanna suss out my options first hehe... Thanks a lot for your input!

P.S. Yes, I'm aware of the upcoming ATI 6000 series cards but I'm not considering them... so please don't ask me to get them instead

[WTA] GPS device

Can anyone out there recommend the best bang for buck GPS sat-nav device around? I'm looking for something towards the lower end of the price scale Will be driving to lots of new areas so I think it will be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

[WTA] Parts recommendation

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a new 23" lcd monitor and a hsf for my cpu. My budget is RM600 for the lcd and RM100 for the hsf.

What I'm looking for in the lcd is best bang for buck since I will mostly use it for watching movies and very light gaming.

The hsf is going to be a replacement for my Intel C2D stock hsf. I intend to oc my cpu which is housed in a CM690 casing.

Hope you guys can recommend me good parts within my budget. Thanks!

Moving PC

Hi all, just wanna ask if anyone has tried bringing their PC overseas before? Do you check in as luggage (with LOTS of padding) or try to lug it as hand carry? What were the outcomes?

FYI my PC is housed in a CM690 which is kinda big so I seriously doubt I can carry it onto the plane.

One way I was thinking is to just dismantle the internal parts (CPU, mobo, GC, RAM, HDD, PSU) to bring with me, sell off the rest and buy a new case when I arrive. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Internet problem

There's something weird going on with my PC just a few days ago. It can technically connect to the ISP, but can't get any bandwidth transfer for browsers (FF, IE, Opera), Yahoo Messenger and Bitcomet. Only Windows Live Messenger and Skype seem to work ok. My PC is running on Vista 32 bit, and I've tried System Restore and updated LAN drivers to no avail. Also ran a full virus scan and it came up clean. I haven't installed any other new programs or fiddled with settings within the past few weeks so not sure what's going on...

I'm pretty sure it's not the ISP's fault, because now I'm using my old laptop (Win XP) and everything works fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

New XP install help!

I just built a new rig and was trying to install XP on it but I keep getting a BSOD error code Stop: 0x0000007b (0xf78d2524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Been trying to adjust the BIOS boot priority settings but still no progress. Using a Pioneer 216D SATA dvd drive and a WD 10EADS hdd if it helps...

Please help me! Thanks.

Blinking cursor

My laptop has this infuriating habit of not be able to start windows AT ALL. This only strikes every few months or so, but seems like it happens after being put in hibernation... dunno if that's actually the cause.

When booting my laptop, I get the usual Toshiba starting splash screen then just a black screen with a blinking MS-DOSesque cursor on the top left. It will stay this way indefinitely. I've tried changing boot priorities to no avail. It doesn't even respond to the usual F8 to get into safe mode.

If it helps, my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A-50 which is 4+ years old and runs Windows Xp Home with SP2. The only solution to this so far is to do a complete reformat and reinstall windows with all programs again, which is a huge waste of time. Let's not forget lost data as well.

Anyone out there can help me out here?

[addedon]February 9, 2009, 9:09 pm[/addedon]Anybody out there? there... ere... *echoes*

Dual boot

I'm building a new rig for the first time and am wondering whether it is worth doing a XP/Vista dual boot on my HDD? The HDD will be 1tb so there's ample space to go around. I was thinking of putting Vista just to be able to enjoy DX10 for gaming and use XP for most other stuff.

Are there any downsides to this configuration? If i install drivers through one OS will the other OS automatically 'understand' that the drivers have been installed? If anyone has done this, please tell me what your experience has been like so far!

Thanks for all your help techsperts!

Hi all,

I'm planning to build a PC for the first time, and would love to hear what more experienced people think about it. here's the parts list:

Motherboard:
Asus P5Q Pro

CPU:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

RAM:
Kingston 4GB Kit-800 (2x2GB)

GPU:
Asus 512MB 9800 GTX+

HDD:
Western Digital 1TB SATAII

Optical drive:
LG GH22NS30 SATA

Casing:
Coolermaster Centurion V (with 460W PSU)

Monitor:
22" LG W2252TQ-PF 2ms

I guess my main concern now with this configuration is whether or not 460W is sufficient to power this system. Should I feed it more power? What's a good alternative casing/PSU combo?

Thanks for your thoughts!
