[Power Tool] Screw driving

Since there is no topic about this type of power tool, I want share my 'limited' experience using it. I already posts some messages related to impact driver in my Rotary hammer thread, and I want to dedicated this thread to impact driver.

To be clear, impact driver is NOT impact drill. Main purpose of the impact driver is for driving screws or bolt. With drilling bits, it also can drill small holes into wood, plastic or steel.

For many years, I was using hand tools, such as screw drivers and wrenches for my home DIYs, Most of us know how hard or exhautive when using screw driver to drive screw into wood, especially the long screws.

In about year 2000, I tried, Black and Decker's cordless screw driver for PC repairing, then I realized how convinient the power tool is. So, I bought Bosch iXO compact screw driver. It works well and really make things easy, driving screw into wall plug for cuitain rail anchoring. It was slow and easy to drive the screw, but much in torque to drive a long screw into wood, so, still I need to use hand tool. I moved to new house, and it need lots of drilling and anchoring. The iXO battery failed, while lots more to go, and I don't have time to go to service center for battery replacement. I decided to get a corded power tool, and I got this Makita TD0101F impact driver. I don't mind the corded power tools because, I have 2 units of 10m extension cable, which will cover every inch of my house. BTW, I never used impact driver before, and very suprise of the result. Most of the screws driving were quick and not going into the 'impact' mode at all.

I did some experiments with this impact driver, by driving longer (3 and 4 inches) screw into wood. As we can see, when the impact mode is engaged, you can hear the familiar sound like at the tire workshop when removing/installing wheel nuts, the shaft turn slower, just like it was on very low gear. If I maintain to push it at certain force, it never slip at all, and the screw's head/slot is not going to be damaged.

I published a video clip in youtube, demonstrating the power of the impact driver.

Enjoy

Update 1: 20120221
As we already saw in the youtube clip, the 'impact' mechanism is the secret to get more torque from small motor.
There are 2 types of impact driver.

1) Typical impact driver.
The one the most popular and available. Its come as corded and cordless type, in several size.
The cordless impact driver usually small, lightweight and compact. The torque range from 90Nm-165Nm

2) Soft impact driver
This new type of impact driver uses hydraulic oil to soften the impact, and make it more silent. The torque is around 30Nm. I never saw this type, but you can find it from Makita and Hitachi Japan.
Makita 6963SPK : From latest Japanese Makita catalogue
Hitachi WP12VA : http://www.hitachi-koki.co.jp/powertools/p...2va/wp12va.html

There are even higher torque impact driver, which called impact wrench. It can take a larger socket diameter with torque between 200-2000 Nm.

Updates, 2012-03-04
[attachmentid=2719194]

Demonstration screw driving using several hand tools and power tools. For details, go to page 4 in this thread.

To be continued....

Thank you.

LYN Power Tools Discussion

Hi, want to see how good is the rotary hammer, compared to impact drill ?

[attachmentid=2459676]

I just published a simple video clip showing the performance comparison between typical impact drill and rotary hammer to youtube, for educational purpose.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ6BZI27gSg

BTW, please follow the safety precaution while handling and operating power tools. I was very lucky because no injury occurred during the making of this video clip.

I used Exceed brand 550W impact drill which I bought some years ago. The drill bit is moderately used, but still in good condition. The size of the drill bit is 6mm, which I bought from local hardware store. For rotary hammer, I used 2 SDS+ drill bits, 6mm and 12mm. The concrete block looks small, but is also quite awesome, because, it is quite heavy, at 39.4 kg. From the density calcution, the concrete block density is 1800 kg/m^3

The first cut, I drilled with impact drill, and you can see it took about 1 minute to drill to the depth for inserting typical plastic wall plug (wall anchor). What we cannot feel from the video is the 'pain' caused from the vibration.

The 2nd cut, showing the drilling with rotary hammer with 6mm drill bit, it tooks about 3 seconds. Since it finished quite quickly, I tried with 12mm drill bit, and you can see yourself the result in the 3rd cut.

Finally, here is the behind the scene, when making this video clip.

[attachmentid=2459682]

If Makita HR2810 is my favorite power tool, then the 'Keep' brand ball head tripod is my favorite photography tool.

BTW, I am just an IT guy, and DIY or home fixing is just my hobby. I am not a professional photograher, movie maker or trade man. So, please excuse me for the video clip quality.

Update: 2011-12-02
I just published another youtube clip demonstrating the rotary hammer's power. Yes, it is possible to drill into wood, but, the hole is not as clean as when drilled using proper wood bit. :

Camera: Ricoh GXR P10.

Update : 2011-12-10
Quick review: Boyai BY2.24R. Cheap China mad 24mm rotary hammer.

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f...2051914&st=140#

Update: 2012-02-27
Change the title from Impact drill vs Rotary Hammer. (Video) to [Power Tool] Masonry/Concrete Drilling to generalized the methods to drill into concrete or masonry.

Thank you..

Reference:
Correct way to handle power tool
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGphjIuyDg4

Cordless impact drill vs cordless rotary hammer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKDIggpbXqU

YTL launches nex-gen TV service in Malaysia - APB

Yesterday I read Asia-Pasific Broadcasting (APB) Dec 2010, circulation.
On the front page there are few articles related to Malaysia's next-gen TV broadcasting. This time they will integrate WiMAX too. FYI, RTM still doing the DVB-T testing since some years ago, and I am enjoying it very much. Especially, I can records P. Ramlee's films in better resolution (704x576) MPEG-TS video and 48kHz@192kbps MP3 sound format using Pinnacle Hybrid TV Pro USB Stick (PCTV 340e). Not to mentioned, I also enjoying listening to Klasik Nasional broadcast in digital stream too...

I know, Malaysia is quite late in the Digital TV brodcasting ... but, hopefully it can improved quicker.

YTL will sell setop box for the reception..I am looking for DVB-T built-in HDTV in Malaysia... but, unfortunately... nothing.. Or I jiist can to get DVB-T module for my current HDTV (Toshiba Regza 42ZV600E) and installed it myself ?

Here the same article in their website.
http://www.apb-news.com/news/494-ytl-to-la...n-malaysia.html

Thank you.

Speakers improvement.

Straight to the point, I have a cheap HT speakers system which I bough 7 years ago (I think) for MYR399. Originally they sound bassy and lot's of mid-bass. As a person who love clarity and high, I think I can do something to improve it. Then I attache a Ribbon (Planar) Tweeter, Fostex FT7RP which I bought in early 1990's.Now, the high sound more toward to my preference.

But, the tweeter were lost during moving back to Balakong. So, as a replacement I bough cheap Pioneer branded piezzo tweeters for car audio, and stick to the original tweeter. The high was better than original dome tweeter, but they exaggerate certain frequency range and not as airy and linear as ribbon tweeters. By that time I upgrade the amp to proper HT AVR amp, the Yamaha RX-V361. But who cares, I am not listening to my speakers much... Most of my listening are with my custom IEMs and portablke DAC/AMP.

Anyway, after reading some of the topics in this forum, especially from the Swan Hivi speaker's owners such as jkleejk and bernie7, I think I want to start back my speaker journey, after I stopped for 20 years. But, I am will not drastically upgrade my speakers system. Then I think why not I buy another ribbon tweeters. Then after some considerations, I bought 3 Swan RT 1.3 and 3 Solen MKP 10uF caps.

I started with with center speaker, by just put the RT on top of it. Now, the center sound. ie, vocal is clearer and cleaner. Before that, the 10uF Solen MKP cap is used as simple 6dB/octave crossover filter which the RT will take 2.5kHz and over of the frequency range. This is enough for treble and upper mid clarity. Since the cap is big, it can be used as a stand too.

Now, the hardest part is to get the RT fixed to the L/R speakers. I removed the original dome tweeters and had to hack the opening to make it fit. After several hours of 'hard' working, finally, I completed the simple DIY to improve my cap ayam speakers.

How, the impressions.
BEFORE : To be honest, I got what I bought for MYR399 , so I am not complaining. Just something, I felt not 'puas' with vocals when listening to musics or watching movies. The bass, epesially the mid-bass is very strong and IMHO, good for movies with lots of 'boom' boom boom.. I need to cranked up a bit to hear the voices, because the mid was too 'laid' back, but at the same time, I also increased the boom-boom-boom bass . The FT7RP or piezzo tweeters can help to make the vocal much clearer, but, not enough, because the default crossover frequency (fs) for FT7RPs were 4kHz. Ie, the treble is better but, still lack of mid

AFTER : the Swan RT 1,3s take 2.5kHz and above at 92dB/W/m, which enhanced the upper mid and trebles. Now, the best thing about ribbon tweeters is, to treble is very linear without any sibilant. The J-pop female singers sound very sweet and silky soft. The vocal or mid is getting much forward, and the treble extended naturally. No frequency bumps or exaggeration of certain frequencies which I normally found in horn or certaion dome tweeter. But, the mid-bass still dominating, and due to the my speaker's placment. What to do, I have small living room . But, audio is about the enjoyment of sound. The mods make me enjoying more than before. I can consider this DIY is a success. BTW, I still need to 'burn-in' the tweeter and the caps first... I know, it will NOT sound as good as MYR57k or vir_killer's audio systems, but, enough for me enjoying good treble clarity. BTW, I am listening without any EQ of FX at the moment. Hey, I ggt what I paid for .

Conclusion:
For those who want a good treble's linear response, ribbon tweeter is the solution.

Did you know that, in high end system tweeter driver is the most expensive part. So, the cost for 3 Swan RT 1.3 + Solen 10uF + courier from China was around MYR400. Almost the same as my initial cost of the original cap ayam speaker's system.

Finally, enjoy the pics... Actually I am quite 'malu' with my 'low-end' speaker's system ... Anyway, I am enjoying them very much.
1) Physical size comparison of the RT1.3 and the Solen cap. Actually it is big in real world
2) Wiring. Sorry for my NOT so skillful soldering finishes
3) RT13 on the center speakers
4) How it looks like from the behind... See the cap as the stand.
5) This how the original main speaker's looks like with piezzo tweeter
6) Now, the cap ayam speakers with Swan RT1.3., Not bsd looking....

References:
Swan RT1.3 : http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_i...roducts_id=1483
Fostex FT-7RP : http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_i...products_id=289

[addedon]March 22, 2010, 1:21 pm[/addedon]Any comment are WELCOMED.

Phonak Audeo Perfect Fit Earphone (PFE)

I said earlier in my first post, I am not an audiophile BUT I do appreciate a good sound.

After spending couple of months browsing head-fi.org, and decided to buy Phonak Audia PFEs. After 2, and almost 2 dozens of emails corespondent with Phonak Asia-Hub Singapore, I received my PFEs, 4 days ago. First impression: It is very comfortable and the highs/treble and mids are excellent. Eventhough bass (or mid-bass) felt less than Nuforce NE-7Ms, but PFEs produce deeper bass and sometime it feels like moving air. Without any bass boost squalization, PFEs is not suitable for bassheads . After more than 20 hour burn-in, bass is getting clearer and better.

The main strength of PFEs is the clarity and accuracy. It also means bad sound/recording will sounds bad , no brainer. Its sound beautiful and it will take sounds to another level, which I feel being hugged by the sound/music. I prefer PFEs to be used with headphone amp where it provides a more energetic and stronger sounds.

Isolations also very good with the standard silicone/foam tips. You can listen to your DAPs/PMPs better with relatively lower level in KTM Komuter, without scarifying music details. It is so comfable that I can fall asleep when drifted by the beautiful sounds.

I will keep PFEs as long it can be, and it is my new reference IEMs/headphones, replacing aging, 17 years old Sony MDR-CD3000.

TQ
