Advice Regarding Home Theater System

Greetings people.

A friend of mine has expressed interest in purchasing a home theater system for his PS3 and HDTV set. At the moment, he is using the TV speakers for audio.

We went to survey around Lowyat Plaza and after several test drives of various combination of amplifiers and 5.1 speakers, we came across a pair which particularly struck our fancy, namely the KEF KHT2005.2 (RM3999) paired with the Harman Kardon AVR 255 (RM2999). We were thoroughly impressed by the performance in respect to the relatively diminutive stature of the speakers. I have a few questions for our resident experts to help in our decision.

1) Are these equipments priced reasonably in respect to current local market prices? If not, what is the proper price range and where can such prices be attained.

2) Does THX certification warrant additional cost? Does it make a difference in respect to overall sound reproduction quality?

3) Are there any other known combination of speaker/amplifiers that perform equally/superior to my stated system at equal/lesser price? If so, please list the name, price and location of these systems.

4) Is there anything else that I have overlooked? Please advise.

These are the questions that I have at the moment. Thank you for your time.

Networking Issues

Greetings,

I have come across a rather odd issue with a recent network that I have set up.

My previous experiences in setting up networks have so far been ridden with a few bumps here and there. Automatic IP configuration had always worked like a charm when a router/modem is plugged into a switch, as all the connected computers would then be assigned the proper gateway and respective IP address. All PC's are able to communicate with each other as well as the internet.

In the current network however, I have attempted something different.

There are 4 computers, each connected to their own separate internet connection, with routers of varying models. LAN routers, not the USB sort.
Thus each computer has 4 separate Network Interface Cards, all built into their motherboards.

I then attempted to network these 4 computers without disturbing their individual connectivity to the internet. I installed 4 additional network cards, and linked these computers together using a 5 port D-Link 10/100 switch and Cat5e cables.

Automatic configuration did not work as it simply did not assign any IP to the 2nd network cards. I then manually assigned the IPs according to the 172.32.118.X IP range as not to conflict with the 192.168.1.X range used by the routers on each computer. The networking subnet is also set at 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0. I then altered the priority in the advanced networking option, increasing priority to the routers on each computer.

I then added all the computers into the same Work group, made sure all computers are able to ping each other, and ensured that file sharing is working flawlessly. No apparent issues so far.

I then attempted to run a LAN gaming session, and this is where the problem occurs. The games simply do not show up on every PC's LAN list. Some are able to view it, while others are devoid of it. Every single PC is using Windows Firewall and it has added the game to the exceptions list. However, certain games like Dark Crusade allow direct hosting. In this case, where the IP is manually added, it achieves flawless connectivity. As not every single game allows direct hosting or manual IP listing, this is a problem. In the event that the game does indeed show up, upon clicking on the server in the list, it promptly disappears followed by a 30 second pause in the connecting to server window, then followed by a "server not found" error message.

If there any one who understands what is occurring, kindly inform me. I appreciate the help.

Thank you for your time.

mIRC Problems

Greetings, fellow forumers. I would first like to thank you for spending the time to read this thread. It is my hope that a solution can be found for this problem.

For years I have been been a heavy user of mIRC file transferring, and problems rarely arise. That is, until several months ago.

While I am still able to transfer at excelent speed, a rather annoying problem has plagued my broadband experience - that is the inability to resume broken downloads to mIRC.

If the file had somehow disconnected regardless of the means, it would be unable to resume no matter how many times I try. I would have to delete the original file fragments and redownload the entire file.

While this was only a minor annoyance with small files, when it comes to large files spanning hundreds of megabytes, it starts to become a major problem. I am also unable to directly transfer files to other people through XDCC.

I have tried to tackle the issue through various means; scripts, different client versions, openings ports, reconnecting, restarted, reinstalling, reformatting all to no avail.

At a complete loss at how to proceed further, I now seek the community's advice.

I am currently running Sysreset 2.53, behind a router.

My broadband connection is rated at 1024/512.

Your advises are greatly appreciated.

Thank you once again for your time and effort.
