Indonesia to offer free vaccines

[JAKARTA] Indonesia has decided to offer free Covid-19 vaccines to people after considering the state budget, said President Joko Widodo.

Jokowi, as he's commonly known, has ordered the finance minister to reallocate spending from other matters to fund the free vaccines, he said in a Cabinet secretariat statement. He will also be the first to be inoculated as a way to show people that the shots are safe.

"So there is no longer any reason for people not to get it," he said.

It's unclear how much the programme will cost and which of the vaccines ordered by the country, which include China's Sinovac Biotech, Novavax and AstraZeneca would be covered. A shipment of 1.2 million doses from Sinovac arrived in Jakarta this month and is being evaluated by the local drug regulator before the government can start what's set to be Southeast Asia's earliest vaccination programme.

The country that's home to the world's fourth-largest population previously laid out a plan to pay for nearly 74 million doses through its national health coverage, while the rest of its 270 million people would have to shoulder the cost themselves. The expense is a key concern for Indonesians, with only one-third of those who want to be vaccinated against the virus saying they would be willing to pay for the shots, according to a government survey in September.

Giant Virus, Awakened From 30,000-Year Slumber, Is Still Infectious

Credit: Julia Bartoli & Chantal Abergel, IGS, CNRS/AMU Scientists in France have awoken a gigantic, ancient virus from its 30,000-year-long slumber in Siberian permafrost — and found that it's ready to infect again. There’s no need to scour eBay for a HAZMAT suit: the virus, dubbed Pithovirus sibericum, only infects single-celled amoebas. However, the discovery has scientists wondering what other microbes are hidden in melting permafrost awaiting another chance to infect. “The revival of such an ancestral amoeba-infecting virus … suggests that the thawing of permafrost either from global warming or industrial exploitation of circumpolar regions might not be exempt from future threats to human or animal health,” scientists wrote in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

A Giant Virus

Evolutionary biologists Jean-Michel Claverie and Chantal Abergel discovered Pithovirus sibericum under 100 feet of coastal tundra in the far northeast of Russia. Their search was inspired by the earlier discovery that a 30,000-year-old plant could be resurrected from fruits buried in permafrost. Wondering if a microbe could perform the same feat, Claverie and Abergel started hunting for ancient viruses in thawed permafrost samples, using amoebas as bait. When the amoebae started dying, they found the Pithovirus inside them. Pithovirus is the oldest virus to ever awaken from dormancy and remain infectious. It measures 1.5 micrometers long, about the size of a bacterium, making it the largest in a class of giant viruses that was discovered 10 years ago.

Potential Danger

If a 30,000-year-old virus can maintain its infectious abilities, Clevarie wonders if other microbes are capable of revisiting humanity in devastating fashion. He told the BBC:

"If it is true that these viruses survive in the same way those amoeba viruses survive, then smallpox is not eradicated from the planet — only the surface. By going deeper we may reactivate the possibility that smallpox could become again a disease of humans in modern times."

However, University of British Columbia virologist Curtis Suttle, not involved with the study, said we shouldn’t hit the panic button yet, since thousands of viruses enter the human body each day by simply breathing. He told Natureit “stretches scientific rationality to the breaking point” to think melting ice would hold enough microbes to affect humanity’s health on a large scale.

Serbian President Labels European Solidarity ‘Fairy Tale’, Says Only China Can Assist in Coronavirus Response

Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić on Sunday blasted the European Union for refusing to export medical equipment to Serbia in the midst of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic.

Serbia is currently applying to become an E.U. member.

“European solidarity does not exist. That was a fairytale on paper,” Vučić said after proclaiming a state of emergency in his country. “As of today, as you know, we cannot even import goods, according to the European Union’s decisions. [European Commission president] Ursula von der Leyen said this a while ago, we cannot import medical equipment from EU countries.”

Vučić said that because Serbia was unable to bring in E.U. medical equipment, the country could only seek the help of China. The president asked China to send “everything…even to send us doctors, [because] our doctors are already tired.”

“We will be begging [Chinese citizens] to come and help us with everything,” Vučić said.

The E.U. has placed a ban on exports of certain medical equipment to non-E.U. states in an attempt to guard medical supplies.

“Such medical goods [protective equipment] can only be exported to non-EU countries with the explicit authorization of the EU governments,” von der Leyden said on Twitter. “This is the right thing to do because we need that equipment for our health care systems.”

Serbia has confirmed 55 cases of coronavirus with no deaths as of Monday, according to the New York Times. However, the country announced a state of emergency on Sunday and mandated a 14-day quarantine for all Serbian nationals and foreign residents returning from abroad, banning the entry of anyone not authorized to live and work in the country.

European Union countries including Italy, France, and Spain have imposed lockdowns in order to contain the spread of the outbreak.

A recent flight in Canada has made an emergency landing due to a mysterious, strange odour in the cabin.
It proved so strong that the pilots on Flight ROU1566 had to put on oxygen masks and issue a Pan Pan, the second-highest level of emergency.
The Vancouver-bound Air Canada Rouge, carrying 245 passengers and 8 crew, turned around after 37 minutes back towards Montreal.

On landing, the crew finally discovered the cause of the stink - a shipment of durian in the forward cargo compartment, reports Flight Global.

The fruit is most commonly found in south-east Asia and is known for its incredibly bad smell. It's banned in some places, including Singapore's subway system.

It is not the first time that durian has created a stink.
In 2018, the odour of a cargo of durian caused passengers of an Indonesian flight to demand crew remove it before departure.

The Sriwijaya Air flight at Bengkulu had been carrying about two tonnes of durian. Travellers weren't satisfied with advice from the flight crew that the smell would dissipate after take off, with one man reportedly starting a protest chant with other passengers that they didn't want to fly on the plane.

Some passengers were so angry there was almost an altercation with crew, the BBC reported.
However, the airline agreed to remove the fruit.

Earlier this year, a library in Australia had to be evacuated "following reports of a strong smell of gas".
Approximately 500 students and teachers were evacuated from the RMIT campus on Latrobe Street, Melbourne as a precaution.
After a comprehensive search, firefighters identified the smell was not chemical gas, but gas generated from durian, which had been left rotting in a cupboard.
