Five perish in helicopter crash

The helicopter took off from an air base in Phitsanulok about 7.30am on Tuesday destined for Phu Phayak mountain in Nan's Chalerm Prakiat district, where the three officials were due to preside over a ceremony for a reforestation project, part of the Pid Thong Lang Phra river basin development project.

The helicopter took off in heavy rain. It lost contact with the air base and disappeared from the radar about 30 minutes after take-off.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti has expressed sorrow at the death of the five men.

He said the three officials had contributed significantly to the work of the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.

After searching for hours on Tuesday, search and rescue teams found the five bodies and the wreckage of the helicopter about 8am yesterday in thick jungle near Ban Nam Kwang in Na Muen district of Nan. Two of the bodies had been thrown from the helicopter. The others were trapped in the wreckage.

Adults battle kids for toys

The crowd was so unruly that soft-spoken singer Fauziah Latiff, who is part of the mission, had to shout in order to get herself heard.

The event was halted after more than 300 out of the 400 children had to go home empty-handed.

However, the local office of the Palestinian Red Crescent is making arrangements to have the toys delivered to them.

Putera 1Malaysia Club president Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said the incident had “shaken” the volunteers.

“On a lighter note, it proves that our humanitarian aid mission has received overwhelming response,” he said.

The Putera 1Malaysia Club had on Saturday also distributed 300 bags of aid to the Palestinians from the Red Crescent centre in the district of Dier Al Balah.

One recipient, Bashir Al-Farish, 55, said the aid would come in useful, especially during Ramadan.

“At least I will have some Malaysian cookies for Hari Raya,” said Bashir, who was among the locals who turned up in the afternoon on motorcycles, and even on horses and ponies, for the aid.

Malaysian set to be major stakeholder at Sheffield

Birch, a Liverpool player in the 1970s, was the Chelsea CEO who put together the RM706mil (£140 million) Roman Abramovich takeover in 2003.

It is understood that talks between United and their potential Malay sian partner have been going on for some time and a conclusion will be reached “in a matter of a few months”.

According to sources, the Malay sian businessman is expected to visit United next week.

The new possible tie-up will make the club’s first Championship One match this Sunday an “all-Malaysian affair” as United will be facing Cardiff City, owned by Berjaya tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan.

“What’s interesting about his (the Malaysian) involvement is that he is investing in a club that is rich in heritage and, more importantly, with strong financial credentials,” said Birch.

United is also known as “The Blades” due to the city’s worldwide reputation for steel production.

Rape on schoolchildren created all-round disbelief

PETALING JAYA: The remand order for an unlicensed school van driver suspected of raping schoolgirls in his vehicle has been extended for six days, as police feverishly run a tooth-comb through the "van of terror" for evidence of the man's heinous acts.

The 51-year-old suspect was brought to the PJ magistrate's court this morning for the remand extension, which was granted by Magistrate Aishah Hijriah Arshah.

The case has merely served to highlight the growing fears of parents and school authorities over the menace posed to schoolchildren.

The crimes involve the alleged rape of two 10-year-olds by the same suspect and the third, a 12-year-old, allegedly molested by another driver in his Kelana Jaya home.

Petaling Jaya district police chief, ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed said police were waiting for another victim, also a primary schoolgirl, to come forward.

There is growing fear the suspect could have sexually hurt more girls in his van of terror.

Arjunaidi said: “We are still questioning the school authorities to know if any other pupil or parent had come forward with complaints against the suspect.”

The cases have been described as “a crime of extreme violence and cowardice committed against defenceless victims.”

This is the nightmarish van (pic) in which the two terrified girls recoiled in deep shock as they were set upon by the alleged rapist-driver, their guardian to and from school.

One of the girls was his foster child who is believed to have been sexually assaulted on several occasions.

Questions are being asked why parents chose to use the suspect’s school van service when he was not registered with the Malaysian School Bus Operators Association.

Police have the suspect in custody and are now checking if more girls were sexually assaulted by him in his nine-seater silver Nissan Vanette.

Forensics are tooth-combing the van for clues into the two alleged sexual assaults to establish if there could have been more such cases.

The suspect, a married man with three children, was produced in a magistrate’s court here this morning to have his remand extended for another week. The 40-year-old suspect is believed to have committed the perverted acts at this secluded street in Jalan 1/12 off Jalan Othman (pic) at noon last Monday.

He was caught by members of the public after a kindergarten teacher who was passing by raised an alarm on hearing the girl’s screams.

Clarifying news reports on the Jalan Othman incident, Arjunaidi dismissed claims that the sex act took place in full view of other pupils.

“The driver took the girl to a quiet place before allegedly raping her. There were no other students inside the van when the incident occurred."

On the number of victims, he said: “We are still waiting for another victim to come forward and we can’t confirm how many have been raped as investigations are underway," he said.

Arjunaidi said the second victim was raped in the suspect's house, adding that the victims were not from the same school.

Police are also anxious to contact Sabapati Siniah, 37, another school van driver to assist them with investigations into a molest case in the van involving a 12-year-old girl in Kelana Jaya.

Sexual attacks on schoolgirls have been on the rise of late. Prominent cases included two men who have been charged with the rape of five schoolgirls in Ampang.

In June, a taxi driver was charged with rape while keeping schoolgirls as sex slaves, also in Ampang.

Dutch court clears way for teen’s solo sail around

A Dutch court cleared the way Tuesday for 14-year-old Laura Dekker to embark on a risky attempt to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, an adventure that could begin in the next two weeks.

Judges at Middelburg's family court lifted a guardianship order imposed on Miss Dekker last year after she said she wanted to set sail when she was still just 13.

Her plan ignited a worldwide debate on how far parents should go in supporting or encouraging their children's improbable dreams.

“With this decision, the responsibility for Laura lies with her parents,” said presiding judge S. Kuypers. “It is up to them to decide whether Laura can set off on her sail trip.”

Both of Laura's parents, who are separated, say they support her attempt.

Miss Dekker was not in court for Tuesday's decision. Her lawyer, Peter de Lange, said she was on her boat, Guppy, and would be delighted by the decision.

“She will be unbelievable happy with this,” Mr. de Lange said. “Justice has been done.”

Miss Dekker could set off for her starting point in Portugal within two weeks, he said.

The Council for Child Protection, the Dutch government's umbrella childcare agency, had asked the court to extend for another year a guardianship order that had prevented Miss Dekker from sailing.

The agency will study the court's decision, spokesman Richard Bakker said. It can decide to appeal.

In a surprising difference of opinion, the youth protection group looking after Miss Dekker had disagreed with the Council and said she was ready to sail.

Writing on her blog last weekend, Miss Dekker was hopeful the court would lift the order, saying she took comfort from the fact that the welfare workers who have monitored her education and preparations for months believe she is ready.

“She is looking forward to making the journey,” Mr. de Lange said.

Since making headlines around the world last year as a 13-year-old, Miss Dekker has obtained a bigger boat and equipped it with modern navigation and safety equipment. She has also studied everything from how to stitch her own wounds, to how to cope with sleep deprivation and how to put out fires onboard her 11.5-metre twin-mast ketch.

“Laura has worked very hard in recent weeks on her survival techniques,” Mr. de Lange said.

“If everything works out the way I want, I can leave for Portugal sometime in the next two weeks,” she wrote in her blog.

In anticipation of a favorable ruling, she recently fitted the boat with new cushions and a new sail — both in her favorite color, red — and a sunshade.

Miss Dekker and her supporters have carefully plotted a nearly two-year route from port to port around the world — including an alternative path around Africa to avoid the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden if necessary.

Despite the meticulous preparations, the Council for Child Protection said it remains concerned about her mental and physical development during such a long and lonely trip.

Sailing is in Miss Dekker's blood. She was born on a yacht in New Zealand waters while her parents were sailing around the world and holds New Zealand and Dutch passports. While her father has always backed Miss Dekker's plan, her mother initially opposed it before giving her daughter her blessing earlier this year.

Miss Dekker could now become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, beating the mark now held by Australian 16-year-old Jessica Watson.

Miss Watson spent 210 days successfully maneuvering her 10-metre yacht, Ella's Pink Lady, around the world, encountering raging storms and 12-metre waves along the way.

But the risks of such solo voyages were highlighted in June, when a 16-year-old Abby Sunderland of California had to be rescued from her solo trip after a rogue wave snapped her mast in the southern Indian Ocean.

Miss Sunderland was rescued by a French fishing boat more than 3,200 kilometers west of Australia two days after the alarm was raised.

Miss Sunderland's parents faced fierce criticism for letting her attempt the trip and for the tens of thousands spent by emergency teams on her rescue. However, they faced no backlash a year earlier, when Abby's older brother Zac completed the same journey at 17, briefly holding the record for being the world's youngest solo circumnavigator.

Coal mine fire kills 28 in China

BEIJING: An electrical fire inside a coal shaft in northern China left 28 miners dead, a government official said Sunday.

An official with the State Administration of Work Safety said the accident, triggered when an electrical cable caught fire, happened Saturday evening at the privately-owned Xiaonangou coal mine in Sangshuping town in Shaanxi Province. He declined to give his name as is customary with Chinese officials.

All 28 miners working in the shaft were killed when the underground cable caught fire, he said.

The official Xinhua News Agency said rescuers had retrieved the bodies of five miners by Sunday morning and an investigation was under way.

Although safety conditions have improved in recent years, China's mining industry is by far the world's deadliest, with accidents and blasts killing more than 2,600 coal miners last year.

In a separate accident, eight other coal miners died when a blaze engulfed a mine in central Henan province Saturday morning, Xinhua reported. The incident at a mine operated by the Zhengzhou Coal Industry Group was also being investigated. - AP

A 23-YEAR-OLD woman was beaten up by her husband after he caught her semi-naked in a car parked outside his office.

Apparently, she had defied her husband by going out drinking at 11pm on Friday.

China Press reported that she later had sex with two men inside the car before she drove to her husband’s office and waited for him.

However, she fell asleep before he arrived.

When the husband arrived eventually, he saw her half nude in the car and beat her up.

Subang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Zainal Rashid Abu Bakar confirmed the victim had lodged a report.

“The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt,” he said.

He said the ministry was firm in its stand that nude scenes in films were not allowed.

“Something that is prohibited in Islam and is still done is a violation. So, we are not keen to discuss this matter,” Dr Rais told a press conference here yesterday.

He was asked to comment on actor Arja Lee, whose real name is Azharuddin Ramly, who went nude for a bathing scene in his lead role as a man who underwent a sex change in ... Dalam Botol, which is expected to be screened at the end of the year.

Arja Lee created a controversy when he admitted to stripping naked in the film.

Following his admission, the Universiti Sains Malaysia student was asked by his lecturer on July 12 to explain his actions.

In the film, Arja Lee shaved his body hair, wore heels and lipstick and performed a nude bathing scene.

The dancer-turned-actor plays the lead role of Rubidin, a gay who has a sex change operation to become a woman but is spurned by his lover who does not like the new “package”.

Dr Rais said going naked in films was not a culture in Malaysia but certain producers were probably influenced by Hollywood and even Bollywood, which has begun to have nude scenes in films.

“We are not for naked scenes in films. It should not be highlighted because it is unsuitable with our way of life,” he added.

Asked whether the film should be banned, Dr Rais said the matter rests with the censorship board.

The film’s producer Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman, when contacted, laughed off the issue, saying it did not arise as the scene was immediately erased on the day it was shot, on Dec 8 last year.

“It’s a joke. Arja Lee had asked me and the film director, Khir Rahman, if he could strip naked for the bathing scene. I agreed but after it was shot, Khir and I decided to erase it. Arja Lee did not know about it. We retained the scene where he wore tight hotpants,” she said.

She said the matter became an issue because the reporter who quoted Arja Lee about him appearing naked in the film did not ask her for clarification.

Seven army privates jailed 7 years for death of fe

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven Royal Malay Regiment privates were sentenced to seven years’ jail each after they pleaded guilty to causing the death of fellow private Mohd Shahrizal Mohd Shaffie after they assaulted him in a ragging incident in 2008.

The soldiers had pleaded guilty on Thursday to culpable homicide not amounting to murder over 27-year-old Mohd Shahrizal’s death.

They are Mahazir Hamad, Mohd Azman Jabril, Shahrin Mat Rabu, Mohd Khairi Abdullah @ Mohd Khalrie Abdullah, Syabramallisi Shahidan, Mohd Bukhari Shawal and Mazlan Awang Ngah, all in their 20s.

High Court judge Justice Mohd Sofian Abd Razak said he could not accept the men’s reason for assaulting Mohd Shahrizal whom they claimed was “lembik” (soft).

“There is no denying that the life of an innocent person has been lost. Because of the accused’s actions, a family has lost a loved one. I hope all of you will change for the better and become people who will contribute to the nation after this incident,” he told the accused here Friday.

Justice Mohd Sofian ordered them to serve their sentence from the date of their arrest in April 2008.

It was reported then that Mohd Shahrizal was punched, kicked, hit on the head with a wooden object and stepped on with spiked boots causing him to involuntarily urinate, among other assaults he endured before he fell unconscious and died.

A post-mortem report by the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia forensics unit certified that he had died of “blunt force trauma to the body.”

The seven accused were charged on April 22, 2008.

Suicide horror for three kids

ALOR SETAR: Following an argument with her husband, a 51-year-old babysitter took several plastic chairs, used a cloth cradle rope and hanged herself – right in front of three children.

Her husband, a diabetic who relied on crutches to move around, had stepped out of the house in Taman Seri Ampang here for several minutes and returned to hear the children aged between one and five crying.

He found Ng Ah Oon’s body in the living area of their house at about noon yesterday. He alerted their next door neighbour who called the police.

The couple took care of two of the children daily while another one stayed with them on weekdays. The two older children are boys and the youngest is a girl.

Kota Setar OCPD Assistant Comm Abdul Ghafar Rajab said that the woman used the cradle’s nylon rope to hang herself.

He said initial investigations showed that the couple had an argument before the incident.

He added that police would record a statement from the woman’s husband.

One of the children’s grandmother, who declined to be named, said Ng was a friendly woman who had taken care of her granddaughter since birth.

“I sent my granddaughter to Ng’s house this morning and she seemed happy at the time. So, I was surprised when my husband called me to say that she had died,” she said.
