Roma was founded in July 1927. At the time, the city of Rome had several teams in the Italian football league: S.S. Lazio (1900), Roman F.C. (1901), S.S. Alba-Audace Roma (founded in 1926 through the merger of Alba (1911) and Audace) and Fortitudo-Pro Roma S.G.S. (founded in 1926 through the merger of Fortitudo (1908) and Pro Roma (1912)), however most of them were weak financially and uncompetitive. Spurned on by the government's desire for each Italian city to be represented by one major club (as was done in Florence, Naples and Bari), Alba-Audace, Fortitudo-Pro Roma and Roman merged to form A.S. Roma. After a short use of the Motovelodromo Appio stadium, the yellow-red team settled in the working-class streets of Testaccio, where it built the extraordinary all-wooden homonym ground. The area still remains the club's spiritual heartland. Other grounds that have been used by A.S. Roma are the Stadio Flaminio and the Stadio Olimpico (the latter was built in 1952).

1920's-1950's
A.S. Roma took part in their first national league in the 1929-30 season and won their first Scudetto in 1941-42. However, they would have to wait a considerable 41 years for their second triumph in the 1982-83 season and 18 years for their third in 2000-01. They were runners-up in 1930-31, 1935-36, 1980-81, 1983-84, 1985-86, 2001-02, 2003-04 and 2005-06 (after the final verdict on the match-fixing scandal). A.S. Roma have been relegated only once in their 80 year history: this came at the end of the 1950-51 season, though they made a swift return to Serie A the following season.

1950s to 1970s
After returning to Serie A in 1952, Roma spent the remainder 1950s and early 1960s in the top half of Serie A. From 1963 to 1979 AS Roma endured a period of mediocrity with 3rd place in 1974-75 being the best they could manage, punctured by either mid-table mediocrity or flirtation with relegation. Notable players in this period include defender Giacomo Losi and midfielders Franco Cordova and Giancarlo De Sisti.

1980s and onwards
Roberto Pruzzo was Roma's most effective striker in the 1980s.With talented players including Bruno Conti, Agostino Di Bartolomei, Roberto Pruzzo and Falcao, Roma would begin the 1980s in its best position to challenge for the title since 1942. After narrowly (and controversially) missing out in 1981 to Juventus, they broke through in 1983 amidst joyous celebrations in the capital. They reached the European Cup final the following year, only to lose to Liverpool on penalties. In the 1990-1991 season, Roma reached the UEFA Cup final in which they lost to Inter Milan 2-1 on aggregate.

They have more or less remained in the top half of Serie A ever since, occasionally mounting a serious challenge for the title, which they won again in the 2000/2001 season by beating Parma 3-1 on the last day of the season, edging out Juventus by two points.

Francesco Totti was one of the main reasons for Roma's victory that season and has since become an icon of the club equal in status to Pruzzo and Conti before him. He is a hero to Roma supporters, even more today thanks to Italy's 2006 FIFA World Cup success. Since then Totti has become Roma's top scorer beating Pruzzo's previous tally of 106 goals.

Roma came close to a successful defense of their title, but lost out as another title race with Juve went to the wire. They missed out by just one point and had to settle for second place and an automatic UEFA Champions League spot. Since they won the scudetto Roma have finished second every season in either the Serie A or the Coppa Italia. They lost out to AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final in the 2002-2003 season (losing 4-2 on aggregate), and again in the Serie A in the 2003-2004 season where they finished second.

2004-2005 was an abysmal campaign where Roma flirted with relegation before finishing in 8th place. They managed to secure a UEFA Cup spot by reaching the Coppa Italia final which they lost to Inter Milan 3-0 on aggregate. Their Champions League campaign was even worse as they only managed 1 point from 6 games before finishing last in their group. Their first game was a 3-0 victory for Dynamo Kiev as they got penalized because an object from the stands hit the referee. The match was called off, victory was given to the Ukrainian outfit, and Roma had to play 2 home games behind closed doors. Their only point came from the 1-1 draw at home with Bayer Leverkusen thanks to a late goal by Vincenzo Montella.

AS Roma also made to the final of the 2005/06 Coppa Italia to face Inter Milan. They drew the First leg 1-1 but lost the return leg 3-1, losing 4-2 on aggregate. This was the second year in a row they lost to Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia final.

AS Roma beat Olympique Lyonnais to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League in 2007, but after taking a 2-1 lead over Manchester United at home and being undefeated in 10 games in all competitions, they suffered a 7-1 defeat in the second leg at Old Trafford (8-3 on aggregate). This was their first defeat in Europe since losing 1-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk in the group stage. It was also the biggest margin of victory in a quarter final match of either the European Cup or Champions League, since 1957-58, when Real Madrid beat Sevilla 8-0 (10-2 on aggregate).

The team secured second place in Serie A with three games to go, behind Inter Milan. Although the nerazzurri dominated the championship, they lost the match against Roma 1-3 in San Siro. The two clubs also faced each other in the two legs of the 2007 Coppa Italia final. Roma won the cup after an impressive 6-2 in the first leg, while lost 2-1 the second leg. It was the eighth Coppa Italia in Roma's history.

25th September 1927 - the 1st ever AS Roma team that play in the league.

The Superga Disaster, 4th May 1949

* yesterday 4/5 was the 60th anniversary of the Superga disaster. initially i posted these in the Serie A thread, but as i read up more and more abt the disaster, i realized that its virtually unknown to much of the poeple out there. i believe that for whoever that is a fan of the beautiful game, should have the chance to get to know more abt 1 of the most tragic events to not just the Italian calcio, but the football world as a whole, as well as the interesting story of the Il Grande Torino.

* all the information that i gonna post next are gathered and collected from various sources (credits to all of them), and edited by myself. feel free to point out and correct me for any mistakes or wrong info that i made.

The Superga Air Disaster

4 May 1949, the plane - a Fiat G.212 - carrying the almost entire Torino A.C. football club team, including staffs and coachs, as well as some journalists, took off from Barcelona. The Torino team had been to Lisbon upon invitation to play in a farewell match against Benfica for the retirement of their captain, Jose Ferreira. The plane made a stop at Barcelona to refuel, and proceed to took off for Turin at 14:50 local time.

It was a cloudy and foggy wednesday, and eye-visibility was low. Upon reaching the Turin airport, the plane lost its course, and by local time 17:04, it crashed into the Basilica of Superga, which situated on the hill of Superga. There were a total of 31 persons on the plane, 27 passengers with 4 crew. There were no survivors.

Out of the 31 victims, 18 of them were the member of the 1st team of 'Il Grande Torino' - 'The Great Torino' - which was the most dominating and conquering club team in Euro at that time. They were leading the league by 16 points with 4 games left to play, having already won the championship 4 times in a row before this. It was destined that they will win it again that season and make it their 5th consercutive title.

After the disaster, Torino was left with virtually no senior members on the roster. They went on to play the remaining 4 matches with the Primavera (youth) team, who as the matter of fact, were now their 1st team. Out of respect, their opponents - Genoa, Palermo, Sampdoria, and Fiorentina - all fields their own respectively Primavera teams too for the games. The young Torino did well, and won all the remaining matches, took the title which was rightfully theirs.

The news shocked the nation, that parliament was immediately suspended. Rumours had it that a woman commit suicide upon hearing the news. 500,000 people turned up for the players' funerals. The Italian football federation even went as far as refused to let the national team to travel by plane to Brazil for the 1950 World Cup.

Torino never ever again able to back on its feet fully and regain the glory of the great 'Il Grande Torino' days again. They were relegated to Serie B by 1959, and although they did rise up and won the title again for 1 last time in 1976. Now in 2009, as I was typing this, they are fighting for survival in Serie A with just 4 games left.

Il Grande Torino

It all began when Ferruccio Novo took over as the club president in 1939, just right when the world were about to be plunged into the chaos of WW2. A free and modern thinker of his time, Novo had eyes like eagle of finding the right man for the right job. He brought in Franco Ossola, Guglielmo Gabbeto, Ezio Loik and some others who went on to become the core the now legendary team. But the most important buy that Novo had made, is no doubt the captain and the greatest of them all, Valentino Mazzola.

until today, Mazzola remains as the symbol of Il Grande Torino, their greatest captain and player, and holding some still standing club records. He is regarded by many as 1 of the greatest players of all time, as well as being dubbed as the "1st ever modern all-round player", some years before Johan Cruyff and his 'Total Footbal'. Played mostly as a trequartista (2nd forward), he can shoot and tackle equally outstandingly, as well as inspirational and motivtional for his team. Mazzola was famously remembered that whenever the team is not playing up to his standard, he would rolled up the sleeves of his shirt over his elbows as a signal of his dissatisfaction, and proceed to lead the charge himself. He was only 30 when he died. His legacy lives on by his son, Alessandro, who is a legend on his own as part of the La Grande Inter team that dominate the 60s.

Il Grande Torino was first taught of the WM formation by Andras Kuttik, the Hungarian manager who lead the team in 1940. The WM formation, pioneered by Herbert Chapman of Arsenal in 1925, was a revolutionary tactic at that time. Torino players adapted to the tactic well, and that became their regular formation throughout the domination period.

Il Grande Torino had set many still-standing record for Serie A. They won the league 4 times in a row from 1942-43 to 1947-48 (1943-44 and 1944-45 were interrupted by war), and the title of 1948-49, when the disaster struck, made it to be 5 consecutive champions. It is still a Serie A record today. During this period, they had never lost a league game at home - 93 matches, 83 wins and 10 draws, and only on 2 occassions they failed to score any goal. Again, this is another record that still stands today. In total of those 5 years, Il Grando Torino scored 471 goals and conceded only 163 goals, including 125 alone in the 1947-48 season. This is a totally undeniable outstanding achievement no matter how you look at it.

the Azzurri at that time was literally the Il Grande Torino team with blue kit, with most of the time consisted of 8 or 9 Torino players. In 1947, 10 Il Grande Torino players started for the Azzurri in a friendly match against the legendary Ferenc Puskas' Hungary. They won the match 3 - 2.

No one will ever know how far Il Grande Torino, or Italian football, can go if the Superga disaster didn't happen. Will Juventus ever be as successful as now if their local rival did not suffer this devastating event ? or maybe the great Real Madrid side on the 50s would find themselves a matching competitor since the introduction of European Cup ? how about the Azzurri with all the talents of Mazzola and co. ? whats left now to us, are just some 'what if' that will never able to be answered. But for now, Il Grande Torino had already achieve immortality in the history book, and they will always be remembered, as 1 of the greatest club team that ever play the beautiful game.

some good read about Superga disaster :

The Immortals - Channel4

Crash that toppled an Italian giant - Times Online

"Serie A is boring n too defensive-minded"

lol this is a question that i hav in my head for quite some times... here we go...

i guess for many of u guys here, the things that come into ur mind when speaking of Serie A or Italian football is that they are "boring", "lack of fast pace attacking", "too defensive-minded", bla bla bla...

i find it to be very amusing that whenever some Serie A matches turn out to b a goal fest or thriller, people wil come n say "wah, Serie A also got such attacking football ah?". n this happened tons of times to me, especially when Roma trashed their opponent 7-0 in a league game 2 weeks ago.

is it true that Serie A is really that 'boring' n 'lack of attacking' ? well of coz as u may know, i'm a die-hard fan of AS Roma n Serie A. i do follow Serie A closely - not juz read some report from website or papers. I watched Serie A games regularly for almost every week. n of coz, i do watched a lot EPL too. La Liga not that much, as i usually pick those big names clashes. n being to b as unbias n neutral as possible, I honestly don't think that EPL n Serie A is that far away in term of excitement.

i know a lot of people tend to brand Serie A as "defensive football". well is that true ? taken out some times, i had collected some statistic of the number of goal scored for both Serie A n EPL, for the past 5 seasons.

Serie A :
2001/02 - 806*
2002/03 - 789*
2003/04 - 816*
2004/05 - 960
2005/06 - 991

*Serie A only hav 18 teams til 03/04. it changed into 20 since 04/05.

EPL
2001/02 - 1000
2002/03 - 1000
2003/04 - 965
2004/05 - 975
2005/06 - 944

so lets see here. the grand total of Serie A's stats is 4362 goals, while EPL's is 4931. now here looks like EPL is far better, right ? but dont forget that Serie A only hav 18 teams for 01/02 to 03/04. therefore the number of matches play is juz 306 per season, compare to EPL's 380.

so in the end, the average goal scored for Serie A for that 5 season is approx. 2.58 goals per match, while EPL's is approx. 2.60 goals per match. well, is the gap really justified the claim of Serie A being "too defensive-minded" ? of coz the stats wouldn't prove anything concrete, but its a point to consider anyway.

Serie A hav some of the world's best attacking talents such as Kaka, Totti, Figo, Toni, etc. n there are also those who are relatively unknow to people who dont follow Serie A, such as like Lucarelli, Di Natale, Di Michele n Bonazzoli. These guys are on par with Crouch, Darren Bent, Saha, etc, if not better. honestly i can't agree wif such thing as "Serie A doesn't hav great attacking plays".

one reason that i believe for Serie A being branded as 'boring' is bcoz of the limited covarges available here. n seriously, those that on Astro are terrible. Its not the game itself, but the commentators. damn those guys know nuts abt Serie A, n the way they talk can really make me fall asleep. n for unknown reason, they tend to 'cover up' the live sounds of the games, so u'll hardly hear the cheerings n shoutings out there. well if u happen to watch it thru some foregin channels, it will b a huge different experience.

lol sorry for the terriblely long post. well i hope u guys can come n share ur thoughts n opinions, like what u really think of Serie A football.

EDITED : to avoid any possible bash or flame or whatever, plz note that I'm NOT trying to argue that Serie A is better than EPL or La Liga or whatever. The point here is that : is Serie A really 'boring, defensive-minded, lack of attacking play" as it hav be branded by many ?
