Kesal cadangan pindaan RUU ditolak

KUALA LUMPUR - Pembangkang kesal dengan beberapa cadangan pindaan mereka terhadap Rang Undang-Undang Akta Pengangkutan Awam Darat (Pindaan) 2010 ditolak oleh Speaker Dewan Rakyat.

Ahli Parlimen Serdang, Dr Ong Kian Ming berkata, antara pindaan dikemukakan beliau ialah penubuhan tribunal bagi menyelesaikan pertikaian pemandu e-hailing dan teksi dengan syarikat pemegang lesen mereka.

"Jika pemandu disenarai hitam, mereka hanya boleh membuat aduan kepada syarikat. Ini tidak adil sebab kalau syarikat menolak aduan, mereka tak ada tempat lain nak pergi.

"Sebab itu saya cadang pindaan agar tribunal untuk pemandu e-hailing dan teksi yang lebih kurang sama dengan tribunal pengguna ditubuhkan. Malangnya jawapan diterima daripada Speaker ialah pindaan saya ditolak," katanya dalam sidang media di bangunan Parlimen, hari ini.

Sehubungan itu, kata Kian Ming, beliau menyeru semua pemandu e-hailing dan teksi membuat desakan sama kepada Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (SPAD) dan menteri terlibat.

"Pertikaian pemandu dengan syarikat pemegang lesen ini mesti didengari oleh pihak ketiga yang bebas di bawah satu tribunal yang dicadangkan itu," katanya.

Sementara itu, Ahli Parlimen Kluang, Liew Chin Tong turut kesal apabila cadangan pindaan agar SPAD diletakkan di bawah Kementerian Pengangkutan turut ditolak Speaker Dewan Rakyat.

"Kementerian Pengangkutan tidak ada dalam pengangkutan awam, perkara ini tidak berlaku di tempat lain hanya di Malaysia," katanya.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yang sebelum ini sering dikecam kerana melakukan penahanan beramai-ramai semasa menjadi perdana menteri suatu ketika dulu, kini menjangkakan Datuk Seri Najib Razak akan melakukan langkah sama.

"Dari episod ini kita dapat jangkakan yang Najib akan bertindak untuk menghancurkan pembangkang dan menakutkan rakyat semasa pilihan raya umum ke-14.

"Terdapat beberapa tanda atau usaha untuk membina kes bagi menangkap dan menahan pemimpin pembangkang. Penahanan pemimpin pembangkang akan mengucar-ngacirkan parti.

"Memang tindakan itu akan menyebabkan rakyat marah tetapi ramai yang akan berasa takut untuk mengundi pembangkang.

"Mereka percaya yang Najib akan dapat tahu dan tindakan akan diambil terhadap mereka. Tanpa pemimpin mereka tidak akan tahu apa yang harus dilakukan," kata beliau dalam blognya hari ini.

Dalam keadaan begitu, kata Dr Mahathir, undi untuk pembangkang akan merosot.

Semasa ketiadaan pemimpin, kata pengerusi Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia itu, Najib boleh merasuah rakyat dan pekerja parti semahu hatinya.

"Mereka akan melakukan semua perkara yang melanggar undang-undang menurut kehendaknya. Duit akan mengalir tanpa batas.

"Pekerja pilihan raya dan juga pegawai mungkin akan menyalaharahkan pengundi, dan undian akan dimanipulasi. Ramai yang tidak akan boleh buang undi sama sekali," kata beliau lagi.

Bekas perdana menteri selama 22 tahun itu juga mendakwa Malaysia kini sudah menjadi "negara polis".

"Ketua Polis Negara mungkin tidak bersetuju tetapi Malaysia telah pun menjadi negara polis atau “police state”. Tidak ada peraturan undang-undang.

"Sama ada arahan itu bertentangan undang-undang negara atau tidak, polis telah menunjukkan yang mereka bersedia menjalankannya.

"Mereka akan tahan pemimpin pembangkang walaupun sedar yang mereka ini tidak pun melakukan apa-apa kesalahan.

"Mereka akan menganggu gugat orang, memanggil untuk disoal siasat dan diancam. Kesemua ini telah dilakukan dan ianya dilakukan dengan persetujuan ketua polis negara," katanya.

Dr Mahathir kemudian menggesa rakyat untuk menolak Najib pada PRU ke-14 ini walaupun tokoh pembangkang ditahan.

"Saya sedar yang pemimpin-pemimpin pembangkang sedang dijerut. Tetapi saya merayu kepada semua rakyat Malaysia; Melayu, Cina, India, Iban, Kadazan, Murut Bajau dan lain-lain tolaklah Najib di pilihan raya umum ke-14 walaupun pemimpin pembangkang dimasuk di dalam penjara.

"Ini adalah negara negara kita. Kita dilahirkan di sini. Kita dibesarkan di sini. Kita telah merasai kehidupan yang baik di sini, mendapat pendapatan yang halal dari pekerjaan yang dilakukan dan perkhidmatan yang diberikan.

"Selamatkanlah negara ini daripada dihancurkan dan diranapkan sama sekali oleh Najib dan ketamakan kleptokrat-kelptokratnya," kata Dr Mahathir menamatkan catatannya.

Pada 1987 lebih 100 orang termasuk sekutu Dr Mahathir ketika ini ditahan mengikut Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri dalam Ops Lalang.

Antara mereka ialah pemimpin veteran DAP Lim Kit Siang.

One woman's passionate account of the part Muslims played in raising the alarm and helping to save lives during the blaze, in which at least 12 people died, has gone viral on social media.

Those of Muslim faith are currently observing Ramadan, and Muslims were coming home from Taraweeh prayers at a Mosque or waking up for Suhoor, which is a pre-fast meal, when the blaze broke out, according to several reports from those involved in the incident. If it wasn't for the religious practices being observed, they wouldn't have been awake in the early hours of the morning when the blaze broke out.

Throughout the day, hundreds of concerned local people, without anyone asking, have turned out to help since Grenfell Tower was engulfed in flames.

The Maxilla Social Club has been turned into an impromptu donation drop-in centre since 2am.

It has been flooded with people taking clothes, bedding and food. Some residents just showed up and said "do you need a hand, I have not brought anything but I can offer my time and help".

Joe Walsh, who runs the Maxilla Social Club, said that volunteers had been on hand collecting donations, making cups of tea and been available for a chat since 2am.

He said these included youngsters who stopped to go and sit their A-level exams before rushing back to help.

Mr Walsh said: "We have been here since 2am and we will probably be here all night.

"We have accepted food and clothing. The only thing we are not accepting is cash. We are sending them to the Christian centre for that.

"It has been the community who did all this.

"I am only surprised by how much the community have helped, but the community have always been good around here."

Man gets 14 days for sitting at magistrate’s bench

SIBU: A 30-year-old man who went up to a magistrate’s bench and sat there for a while ended up getting a 14-day jail.

The man, Kuo Tai Ta, is the one who allegedly smashed the glass doors and showcase panes at two Digi service centres here in March.

He arrived at the court compound around 8am, and parked his car right in front of the main entrance of the court house.

When told to remove the car, he was said to have obliged, albeit angrily.

Kuo later entered Court 1 of the magistrate’s court and took to the bench.

He sat there for a while until a policeman told him to come down.

The court was not in session then.

Later, when he appeared in Court 2 to answer a charge of allegedly smashing the Digi centre, Magistrate Sofia S Sawayan asked him to explain his conduct.

Kuo did not explain, and was sentenced to 14-day jail for contempt of court under the Third Schedule Para 26 of the Subordinate Court Act, 1948.

Kuo was at the court yesterday to answer a charge framed under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing damage amounting to RM20,000 and a charge under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for drug abuse.

Section 427 of the Penal Code provides for at least one year in jail and not more than five years or with fine or with both.

He allegedly committed the offence about 2pm on March 13 at a Digi centre in Keranji Road.

He smashed three smartphones, mobile phone alarm system and the glass wall of the premises using a golf club.

The centre has claimed loss of RM11,497.

The drug abuse case carries a fine of RM5,000 or a jail term up to two years and to undergo at least two years of supervision after serving the sentence.

According to the charge, he was found to have abused Methamphetamine and Amphetamine about 2.20pm on Aug 9, 2015 at the central police station here.

The court adjourned the hearing of the two cases to June 16.

Meanwhile, Kuo faces another charge under Section 427 for allegedly smashing the glass wall and door of the Digi centre in Wong King Huo Road using a golf club at 1.45pm on March 13.

The centre has claimed loss of RM23,364.71.

The case comes up for trial today.

These past few days, reading all sort of news and putting my own experience dealing with some convicts and ex-convicts. There are certain stigmas being attached to these group of people.

I tried to understand why these stigmas are there, but thinking about those give me quite a headache because in every group of people, there will always be at least two sides that contradict each other, for better or worse.

How should we treat them?

Why do we treat them as such?

Should they be treated like that?

Do they deserve any chance?

MELAKA, 20 Mac — Seorang pemimpin kanan DAP dan seorang ahli perniagaan direman tiga hari bagi membantu siasatan kes penipuan membabitkan pajakan tanah di Kelantan, melibatkan anggaran kerugian RM976,300.

Perintah reman bermula hari ini dikeluarkan mahkamah majistret terhadap kedua-dua suspek berusia 29 dan 54 tahun, lapor Utusan Online.

Kedua-duanya yang memakai baju lokap berwarna oren hadir ke Mahkamah Ayer Keroh di sini pagi tadi disiasat mengikut Seksyen 420 Kanun Keseksaan.

Pada 14 Disember lalu, laporan polis dibuat seorang pengadu yang juga pengusaha kebun sayur, mendakwa membuat transaksi pembayaran wang tunai ke dua akaun penama suspek berjumlah hampir RM1 juta untuk mendapatkan tanah pajak itu.

Isu itu sebelum ini didedahkan wakil rakyat Bebas dari Duyong, Goh Leong San dalam persidangan Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) 9 Mac lalu.

Woman charged with slapping teacher blasts court photographers

NIBONG TEBAL: Furious over being photographed by the news media, a woman facing a charge of slapping her daughter’s teacher, lashed out at the press yesterday, threatening them with legal action for covering her trial proceedings at the Jawi magistrate's court here.

34-year-old Tan Seow Yen, immediately recognisable by her fire-red hair, also rubbed authorities the wrong way when she used her cell phone while awaiting a decision on her case, after being warned by a policeman on duty not to do so.

Magistrate Shamshol Azwa Martadza eventually postponed the hearing to Wednesday, while the prosecution files necessary submissions on the case.

On Feb 16, 2015, Tan claimed trial to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a 39-year-old teacher by slapping her on the face, after accusing her of pinching her daughter.

She is alleged to have committed the offence on Feb 2, 2015, and was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

During the trial proper, five prosecution witnesses testified, while two defence witnesses spoke.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiq Nazrin Zaharinan prosecuted, while Tan was unrepresented.

Mum gets 6 months' jail, RM2,000 fine for slapping teacher

NIBONG TEBAL: A magistrate's court has sentenced a 36-year-old mother of three to six months' jail and a fine of RM2,000 for slapping a teacher at a school in Sungai Bakap.

Tan Seow Yen was charged with slapping her child's primary school teacher L. Vanitha, 38, at SJK © Chong Kuang in Sungai Bakap at about 5.15pm on Feb 2, 2015.

Vanitha, who taught Bahasa Malaysia to Tan's child, has since been transferred to another school here.

Tan was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

Magistrate Shamshol Azwa Martadza ordered for the sentence to run from Wednesday.

DPP Afiq Nazrin Zaharinan prosecuted the case while Tan was represented by lawyer Mohd Ismail Mohamed.

Quebec mosque attack: Student Alexandre Bissonnette charged

Canadian police have charged a French-Canadian student over the fatal shooting of six Muslim worshippers at a mosque in Quebec. Alexandre Bissonnette faces six counts of first-degree murder and five of attempted murder. The 27-year-old briefly appeared in a Quebec City court over Sunday evening's attack, during evening prayers at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre. Vigils have been held across Canada to commemorate those killed and injured.

More than 50 people were at the mosque when the shooting erupted just before 20:00 on Sunday.
Nineteen people were wounded - all men - and of five people still in hospital, two were in a critical condition.

Mr Bissonnette did not enter a plea as he appeared in court on Monday, wearing a white prison-issue jump suit, his hands and feet shackled.
The suspect was arrested in his car on a bridge leading from Quebec City to Ile d'Orleans, where he called police to say he wanted to cooperate with the authorities. According to local media, Mr Bissonnette studied political science and anthropology at Laval University, whose campus is about 3km (two miles) away from the mosque.

The Montreal Gazette reports that the suspect dressed up as the Grim Reaper for Halloween, according to his Facebook page, which has now been taken offline. On the social network, he also reportedly "liked" US President Donald Trump and French National Front leader Marine Le Pen.
Francois Deschamps, an official with an advocacy group, Welcome to Refugees, said the suspect was known for his far-right views.
"It's with pain and anger that we learn the identity of terrorist Alexandre Bissonnette, unfortunately known to many activists in Quebec for taking nationalist, pro-Le Pen and anti-feminist positions at Laval University and on social media," Mr Deschamps wrote on organisation's Facebook page.

(Malaysia Outlook) – The embattled DAP councillor M. Satees has denied today that he had insulted the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, in a Facebook posting last week, claiming that the allegations spread online by certain quarters were untrue.

Satees also apologised to anyone who felt offended with his posting.

He said his posting had only referred to the Federal Constitution vis-à-vis the Johor Constitution, when he questioned the sultan’s command to ban demonstrations in Johor.

Ex-Selangor MB’s suit against news portal settled

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s suit against The Malaysian Insider (TMI) editors and its owners for allegedly implying that he misused his position as Selangor Mentri Besar for personal gain has been settled.

The case was settled after TMI chief executive officer and editor K. A. Jahabar Sadiq K. A. Abdul Kader and its Malay news editor Amin Shah Iskandar read out an apology in court before High Court judge Justice Nor Bee Ariffin on Monday.

Justice Nor Ber later recorded the apology and made no order as to cost.

In his suit filed on Aug 11, 2014, Khalid claimed that Jahabar had on July 24 written or caused the publication of a defamatory statement in its English commentary.

He claimed that Amin Shah had written or caused the publication of a defamatory Malay commentary on the same day.

Khalid said the words used suggested that he was of bad character, untrustworthy and not fit to hold the position of Selangor Mentri Besar.

Khalid said that TMI had also published a series of commentaries between June 9 and July 24 allegedly exposing his misconduct.

He said his reputation as Selangor Mentri Besar, Port Klang assemblyman, Bandar Tun Razak MP as well as a politician and former corporate figure had been tarnished by the articles.

He claimed to have suffered humiliation as well as mental and emotional distress.

Towards the end of the trip, when we had reached Singapore (around 2am), the driver asked where I wanted to be dropped off so I went toward the front to let him know. He then stopped the bus, and asked if I was alone, if I didn’t have any friends, got up and followed me to the back where I was sitting and said to me “You sleep here, in bus with me”, at the beginning I thought it was an innocent old man trying to be funny or sweet. but he kept on insisting. And i naively just smiled and simply said “no, I need to be dropped off at x place.”
He then started telling me “you’re cute, you sleep here, you’re cute, you sleep here with me” “kiss me, kiss me” repeatedly. At this point the bus was still dark, the door was closed and he was sitting next to me trying to force himself on me, trying to kiss me and touching my body everywhere. I was terrified and wrestled with him as much as I could, but I was so fearful, I had no idea what he was capable of and was afraid of more aggression from him. I pushed him away as hard as my fear let me and said NO.
I know I felt violated to have my body touched in such a forceful and unwanted way, but I feel lucky that he left me alone and I believe it was only because of God’s grace he gave up, went back to his seat and nothing else happened to me.
He then, kept driving. I asked him to let me out and he wouldn’t so I asked a bit more sternly to let me off the bus and said “let me out!” as he continued to say “you sleep here, you sleep here with me” and asking me to sit closer to him.
Finally, after a while, he did, he dropped me off at some random apparently not so safe neighborhood where hookers hang out.
Thank God I was able to get a cab and get home safe and was able to take a picture of his face and of his bus. So wherever you are traveling alone, beware of this man and of this bus company.
