A starting point for the diet of an MMU student

Hi everyone. This is my first post here in this section. Before this, I tried several times to lose weight and tone my body, but the evil brothers of Laziness and Demotivation crept up to me and gave me a good one-two punch. But now, some things happened in my life, and I decided that I have nothing left to lose. So I'm doing everything I can to get the body I'm dreaming of.

What I'm here to ask isn't the workout routines, or what I should be doing at the gym. I had the good fortune of having a room-mate who's built like a brick and is well on his way to getting a six-pack. He agreed to be my personal trainer until the point where I can handle it on my own. So, I'm lucky for that. On the days when I'm not at the gym, I go jogging/running at the campus track, and do crunches.

What I'm worried about is my diet. I'm an MMU student studying in Cyberjaya, and to get proper food here is quite a big task, not to mention a strain on my finances. All the shops selling nasi campur here are cooked Malay-style, which means a lot of masak lemaks and santan. Veggies are limited to beansprouts and cabbage... you know, the cheap stuff. On the flipside, you have shops here selling nothing but western foods (burgers, fries, pasta, etc.). The grocery shops are packed with carbs (biscuits, chocolates, ice-cream, carbonated drinks, etc).

I've started by reducing my rice intake by 50%, and packing my plate with veggies and meat (fried chicken is a no-no). But the prospect of having another lunch with either taugeh or kobis cooked until they're out of shape makes me want to throw up.

So, how do I go about my diet? I'm scared of eating the wrong food and essentially nullifying whatever work I'm putting in. There's a vegetarian food stall in campus, just to let you guys know. Should I make that my new hangout spot? How do I go about this? I'm not looking for a step-by-step instruction here; that's just too much to ask from you guys. But I really want it to work this time. A starting point would be good.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any other info you guys need, just let me know; I'll reply as soon as possible.

P.S: Oh, and before you guys ask me to use the search function: I'm staying at the campus hostel, and the only thing that works properly here is Yahoo Messenger. Pages take forever to load, and most of the time, they don't. I'm sorry if I'm asking redundant questions here, so if there's another topic like this one, please point me in the right direction.
