Fast & Furious in new multi-storey carpark in KK

KOTA KINABALU: A multi-level carpark meant to tackle decades-long parking woes in the Foh Sang commercial area in Luyang near here is turning into a nuisance and hazard instead.

Residents say that the structure has become an illegal racers’ training ground at night, especially during weekends.

Some allege that many vehicles and motorcycles head up the carpark ramps and then speed down over and over again.

“This not only causes noise pollution but also poses a danger to the public,” said a retiree who did not want to be identified.

She said the building should have been a dream come true for residents and traders who have been struggling with parking problems for over 10 years.

Luyang community development leader Gee Tien Song, of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), said complaints have been coming in ever since the structure officially opened on Jan 1.

He said some residents had even lodged police reports.

“The carpark has become a gathering spot for car and motorbike enthusiasts in the late evening, with those involved revving engines, speeding, and playing loud music.

“These actions have caused significant noise disturbances, particularly affecting families with young children and elderly residents,” he said when contacted on Tuesday (Jan 7).

He said the facility was not designed for such activities as the limited space makes it unsuitable and unsafe for speeding or large gatherings.

“Be considerate and use the facility responsibly,” he said.

Gee also called on KK City Hall to take immediate action by implementing stricter measures to ensure the facility served its intended purpose.

Use of the facility, which has 321 bays for cars and 22 for motorcycles, is free of charge for January and February, with an introductory rate of RM1 per hour to be implemented in March.
