2.2.1 Update failure (Ipod Touch 2G)

Update failed, now it's stuck on the initial "plug into itunes" screen. iTunes no longer recognizes it as being plugged in. Have tried restarting the device a few times, restarting the computer (Windows XP ), and plugging it into various USB slots to no avail--all that happens is that when I plug it in to a "fresh" USB port the driver installs (I can see it for a second in the system tray), but then nothing happens. If I look at the device manager while it's plugged in under the USB section the "Apple Recovery (iBoot) USB dDriver" is listed. I find myself not caring much about 2.2.1, any ideas on what I can try to get the iPod to back up in iTunes so i can at least restore it?
