AMD Online Overclocking Competition

INTRODUCTION

It has been a while back since the last AMD mini competition held in Lowyat.net. We going to have it once again, by AMD fans here. This mini Overclocking Challenge which will kick start from 16th March 2012 until 15th April 2012.

The Challenge will be divided into two(2) categories; AMD Phenom II and FX CPUs. There is no limitation to motherboard brands. You are encouraged to participate and bench it with any brand of motherboard available in the market.

The OBJECTIVE
To PROMOTE the overclocking community in Malaysia and DEVELOP the interest and DISCOVER the fun in overclocking.

CPU Categories
1- AMD FX (Bulldozer)
2- AMD Phenom II

Rules and Regulations
1. Open to the Malaysian community or anyone residing in Malaysia.
2. No brand limitation on motherboard. Only use retail CPU and no Engineering Samples (ES) is allowed.
3. Participants are allowed to join both categories but will only be eligible to win 1 prize from one category not both.
4. Only air or watercooling is allowed. No cold air is allowed to pass through the CPU heatsink is allowed except in air-conditioned room(i.e. no direct cold air blown onto the heatsink).
5. We reserved the right to disqualify any entries. All decisions made in respect of this Online Overclocking Challenge are absolute and final!

INTRODUCTION

ASUS Malaysia has given me a chance to test and review their new AMD FM1 socket motherboard which is ASUS F1A75-V Pro. Here is the official link of the motherboard ASUS F1A75-V PRO.

[Review] MSI PCIE Gen3 & Click BIOS II

Introduction

PCIE Gen3 or PCIE3.0 had been announced for quite sometime and MSI seems to be the 1[sup]st[/sup] to implement the technology to their motherboards. The press release dated, 5th July 2011 mentioned about this technology already been fused into the motherboards.
For obvious reason, MSI replace the B3 suffix with G3 for the model name that supports PCIE Gen3 but PCIE Gen3 is not the only improvement of G3 model. The other improvement is the Click Bios II, the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). Let see what is so good with this PCIE Gen3 and the Click Bios II.

PCIE 3.0

PCIE Gen3 was announced by PCI-SIG last year and the specification was released on Nov 2010. It was expected to hit the market late this year but some manufacturers already take advance step to implement the technology early. There are already motherboards with PCIE Gen3 support in the market but still no PCIE Gen3 device (graphic card, storage etc) found. Some say this is just a waste of money as current device exist also still cannot fully saturate the current PCIE Gen2 bandwidth. Current PCIE Gen2 bandwidth is 16GB/s where the new PCIE 3.0 has double the bandwidth which is 32GB/s. There's a few requirement for Gen3 platform, both in Software/BIOS and Hardware form. In this regards, PCIE 3.0 is not possible to be enable solely through BIOS Update. Gen3 specific switch chip, capacitors and resistors are needed for a TRUE PCIE Gen3.

Click Bios II

Click Bios II is an UEFI Bios.UEFI is not a new and rare technology as it had been implemented early this year by several motherboard manufacturers. The new thing here is the Click Bios II which is an improved version of Click Bios. Let we see how good is this new Click Bios II. Is it just an interface improvement or more than that. Please take note that Click BIOS II is not exclusively made for G3 motherboards, it will be implement on other models as well but it launched along with G3 motherboards and i'm eager to test it out.

First and foremost, thanks to AMD for the processor, Gigabyte Malaysia for the motherboard and also to Sanko, OCDrift captain.
AMD Phenom II, currently the flagship processor from AMD has been launched for quite some time. There are plenty of models available ranging from x2, x3, x4 and x6. The numeric used in AMD's processor model name is actually referring to the cores available. Apart of different models, AMD Phenom II is divided into two different categories, the Black Edition and non-Black Edition. There are actually exactly the same with one difference, which is an important one. The Black Edition processors have unlocked multiplier providing maximum headroom for OverClocking effort. While waiting the Bulldozer to arrive, let's take a look at the AMD Phenom II x6 1100T.

As the list above, the CPU cooler is just an average yet cheap CPU cooler and also the motherboard used is not an expensive motherboard. This processor need no expensive hardwares to slot in for it to show it's performance.
