How to sound insulate a kancil

yo kancilers
are yu satisfied with your cabin noise level?
i don't.
not saying that i have done mine completely, but to share what i have done, and to get your advice on what have you done on yours.

everybody knows that there are a few areas need insulation;
- door panel
- roof
- firewall
- floor
- door seams

among those that i have tried (door and roof), i found that i have done it quite well on roof.

Examination on roof
How i examine my roof? i simply stand outside my car, and give my roof top a slight knock (with finger, not hammer ok?). If you do that, you will know that kancil gives a long echo, compared to other cars, even a 20 year-old proton saga (with good thick headliner)
Well, upon further close look, you will notice that the roof of a kancil, is simply consist of large sheet metal with a thin layer of grey perforated plastic sheet underneath, inside the plastic sheet, there is a thin (~4mm thick) yellow sponge layer that gives you a soft feel. Nothing else.

Problem with the roof
the problem with this roof configuration is that;
1. the sheet metal is soft, it vibrates every time the car hits a bump, making the noise without failing
2. the plastic sheet is perforated, not stopping heat from outside of the car, and not isolating the cabin from outside heat

The roof plan

(material needed)
1. flash tape (3 inch wide or wider, from hardware shop, use for house roof repair), approx. RM35 per roll of 10m long
2. Closed cell foam, Superlon or similar (eg. laminate flooring white foam sheet from Ikea will need several layers with 3mm thick per layer)
3. Headliner cover/cover layer (at your like. I got mine from a local fabric shop). Price depends on your taste, i got mine for RM8.8 to cover the roof surface, with excess material.
4. Dunlop glue or similar (to stick the foam layer or cover layer, whichever does not come with self adhesive)

(tools required)
1. Plastic scrapper
2. Measuring tape
3. Scissors
4. Pen knife
5. Roller (preferably wall paper roller, but i used office chair roller wheel)

(step by step)
1. Surface preparation/remove and clean
1.1 remove the side strips (plastic railing in light grey/beige color) on both sides of the plastic sheet. (may need some force, as it is clinching onto the metal railings) Keep this two plastic strips.
1.2. remove the plastic sheet, start peeling from one edge. If you are lucky, the spongy layer will come along with the palstic sheet (skip step 3). Else, peel the plastic as it is.
1.3. Clean the remaining sponge on the roof metal, either by using a plastic scrapper, or rub with finger, or clean with alchohol.
1.4 it is assumed complete onlyif you see the roof metal in its car paint color, nothing else.

2. Stick flash tape all over the metal surface. Roll it down on the metal surface as firm as you can. Flash tape strip direction is along car length.

3. Stick Superlon on (don't pre-cut to size, trim later). Or if you use ikea foam sheet or Superlon w/o adhesive, apply Dunlop glue on both roof metal surface, as well as the foam. Apply a thin wipe on both surfaces. Not neccessorily to cover 100% of the surfaces, just cover a few lines will do. And stick them on.

4. Trim the foam/Superlon with 1cm extra to be stuffed inside the metal railing along four edges.

5. beautify with your preferred cover layer (with Dunlop glue again of course)

6. Trim the cover as step 4.

7. Snap the plastic strips back.

8. Done.

Verification
Knock again from outside, the echo is gone.

Happy kanciling...
who hates 2-wheel motorcyclist?

i used to complain those 2-wheelers who rides their bikes in between lanes, and cursing that they should value their life more than ever by keeping to the left.
after two continuous encounters, i have decided to change my mind on them.

While on the way to work, i managed to observe there is this leaner doig his responsibility; picking up rubish alongside the left most lane.
The way he does his job is so special. He has a ring shaped weight, tied to a string, which he just 'fishing' up the trash from the road without bending his back.
As the traffic was slow, i could focus on the old man in detail. you know what, that then i realized, that the ring shaped weight is a magnet! and he is using that magnet to attract NAILS!! lots of them!!
after passing by that old guy, next thing i observed not far (~100m?) later, was motorbike broken down, and getting his tyre under repair, by another motorcyclist, who, so coincidently, have spare tyre (they must be making business by ding so).

Not only once, but twice that i observed this, yes the same thing same scenario.

now, no wonder motorcyclist doesn't want to ride their bike alongside the curb, as they those who 'experience' that can't do much, other than riding their bike in between lanes...

(20nov2008 - title edited upon feedback...)
