Motorists stunned by 'shootout'

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists stuck in the usual Saturday afternoon traffic jam at Jalan Bukit Bintang were surprised when four teenagers, armed with "guns", suddenly jumped off a black pick-up truck in the middle of the road.

At the same time, bystanders around the mall area too ran onto the streets with their "guns" drawn.

Within seconds, a 20-man shootout was unfolding, right before hundreds of stunned motorists and weekend shoppers, on the traffic-clogged road.

One "gunman" climbed onto a car's rooftop to get a better firing angle, but was promptly shot down by opposing forces.

He rolled off the vehicle and onto the ground, holding his stomach in "pain".

Despite the seemingly violent scene in the city centre here yesterday, not a single drop of blood was spilled as all the "gunmen" were wielding water-pistols.

Just as quickly as it started, within 30 seconds of the first "shot" being fired, the actors ran off in all directions and disappeared.

The shootout flash mob scene yesterday was organised by RandomAlphabets -- a group of art performance enthusiasts.

Flash mob organiser and the group's frontman, Zain HD, said the "mob" was brought together just for fun.

"Initially we thought of writing some kind of educational message, but in the end decided to just entertain motorists who were stuck in the jam," he told the New Sunday Times.

He said the group had planned extensively for the event, mainly to ensure people's safety.

"We had picked the location based on its usual traffic build-ups, so we would not be disrupting an otherwise smooth traffic flow," he said.

He said the cars involved in the scene belonged to team members.

The short sketch cheered up a number of people, which was evident as tourists, shoppers and motorists were seen laughing at the unusual sight when they realised what it was.

Zain said the full-video of the flash mob event will be uploaded onto YouTube soon.

RandomAlphabets had organised similar events across the city in the past several years, including the KL Freeze, World Pillow Fight Day and the Merdeka Train Party.
