Chicken Cheaper by 70 sen But Lamb Will Cost RM1 M

PUTRAJAYA: This Deepavali, chicken is cheaper by 70 sen but local mutton and imported lamb will cost RM1 more.

Chicken is one of the 14 items that are subjected to price control in conjunction with the festivities. Live chicken is at RM5.70 per kilo, standard chicken is Rm7 and super chicken is priced at RM7.80. Whereas, the price of local mutton with bone has been set at RM36 a kilo while imported lamb will cost RM25.

The 10 day price control scheme would be effective by this Saturday, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek.

“These are the maximum prices which apply to 89 districts and areas in the peninsula, 32 districts in Sarawak, and 24 districts in Sabah and Labuan.

“The maximum prices were determined based on weekly price monitoring in all districts and areas, views of related government agencies and discussions with importers, exporters, suppliers and wholesalers of the listed items,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

The controlled items will be displayed with pink price tags.

Over 1,400 websites blocked by MCMC, says Shabery

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 1,400 websites have been shut down or blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) following complaints by Malaysian Internet users.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek (pic) said 1,225 complaints had been lodged with the commission this year alone, with regards to misuse of social media websites and accounts.

“This only constitutes about 0.06% of Malaysia’s Internet users, but we still take action if the complaints are found to be true.

“Following that, we have shut down about 1,400 websites, because although we believe in freedom of information, it should not be done against the law,” he said in reply to Datuk Seri Noh Omar (BN - Tanjong Karang) in Parliament Tuesday.

Noh also mentioned a ‘rakyat biadap’ who he claimed continued to ‘shame the country’ after absconding, in an apparent reference to sex blogger Alvin Tan who jumped bail and is said to be seeking political asylum in the United States.

To that, Ahmad Shabery said 11 cases of social media abuse had been taken to court this year, including Tan’s case.

“The MCMC has also registered about 2,000 complaints on some people misusing their Facebook accounts.

“Our job is made slightly difficult because a number of users do not go by their actual names, but we will still endeavour to find them and take action,” he added.

In a follow up question, Noh also suggested a new Social Media Department in the ministry to replace the Information Department, which he claimed still used conventional methods to disseminate information.

In response, Ahmad Shabery said he will consider setting up the new department, but to complement the Information Department to make it more IT-savvy.

Zahid Hamidi: Majority of non-Malays moderate

KUALA LUMPUR: The majority of the non-Malay communities in Malaysia are moderates who respect the sentiments and sensitivities of other races, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

He said a newspaper report that quoted him as saying that non-Malays were getting increasingly arrogant and insulting the bumiputras, the royalty and Islam had been taken out of context.

He said he was referring to leaders and supporters of the DAP, in his speech, who lacked respect for the feelings of the Malays.

Zahid said this was evident in comments made by the opposition party and their supporters, especially those posted on pro-opposition news portals and the social media.

The Umno vice-president said the Barisan Nasional had non-Malay component parties and certainly they were not racists in their approach and that decisions affecting the country were discussed.

The power sharing approach and consensus-making were the hallmark of Barisan's success.

“But it cannot be denied that DAP supporters had taken a different approach with their arrogant method of politicking,” he said when contacted.

An English daily had quoted him as saying that Malays were paying the price of being kind to non-Malays and that the latter was getting increasingly arrogant.

He was reported as saying that the insults were made under the pretext of democracy, freedom of speech and globalisation.

Zahid said he would not have endorsed those who made insulting remarks against the non-Malay communities, citing police actions against these culprits.
