Missing external telephone line

Hi,

I just bought a new house on subsale. As the TM contractor came today to install Streamyx (no Unifi unfortunately), I notice a very odd thing. There is no external cabling for telephone line. Looking at the other house, there are 2 cable for each house jotting out near the drainage piping (1 for each floor) at the back of the house. Just not mine. Very clean wall (which shows no foul play).

Since I bought it on subsale, don't think I can go back to the developer for defect complaint. What's the recommended steps I should take?

1. Make new wiring. Good thing is my work room have its window facing the back of the house where the telephone poll is. Though getting the wire into the house is something of concern.
2. Break the wall and pull out the original wiring.

On top of those option, who should I call for them? Electrician? As in case 2, it requires wall hacking. For 1, I can't imagine TM Contractors would do a clean job; they did a horrendous job at my parent's house.

Thanks.

'Lying' to bank trading in car due to commitment

Hi,

I am about to buy a car and they told with my salary it would be difficult to get a loan as I already have a loan (with the same bank). Triple of both is more than my salary.

Then the sales guy tells that he can trick the bank by saying I'm actually trading in my old car for the new one (which I am not, I will still keep the old car as it still have 6 years in its loan). That will make it look like I will only service 1 loan and get it approved.

Has anyone experience this? Is it safe? Seeing I will be servicing both with the same bank. Anything I should be cautious of?

'02 CRV Alarm can't disarm

Hi guys, got a bit of a problem with my '02 CRV.

Last sunday I forgot to turn off the cabin light and the battery drained out. However after jumping it everything went back to normal. But the car wasn't driven anymore afterward. On monday my dad started it and it was fine.

But yesterday I want to drive it and everything is pretty much dead. Can't even unlock the car (it was still possible when the battery drained out previously). So I unlock manually and to my surprise, it set off the alarm. And I cannot get it to switch off.

There's a button on the console left side of steering but pressing it nothing happens. My remote also won't disarm it.

So I had to pull the cable from the battery to shut it up (it was happening at 10PM so I had to shut it up somehow).

What should I do to disarm it so that I could at least drive it to the workshop?

Thanks!

CPU/Mobo pairing with 6950

Hi,
I would like a suggestion on a CPU/Motherboard to pair with my Sapphire 6950 1GB. Preferably a CF mobo. Budget max for both item will be RM1000. The cheaper the better for as long it won't bottleneck my GC. I don't do much CPU intensive stuff.

On a separate budget would be RAM.

Another one is PSU for CF purpose. What would be best? Haven't set a budget yet but obviously, no need to go overkill. As long as it serves its purpose, that will do.

Gigabit for Kansas City, Kansa

As part of our overall goal to make the web better for users, last year we announced a new project: to provide a community with Internet access more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have today. The response was overwhelming—nearly 1,100 cities felt the need for speed—and we were thrilled by the enthusiasm we saw across the country for better and faster web connections. Thank you to every community and individual that submitted a response, joined a rally, starred in a YouTube video or otherwise participated.

After a careful review, today we’re very happy to announce that we will build our ultra high-speed network in Kansas City, Kansas. We’ve signed a development agreement with the city, and we’ll be working closely with local organizations, businesses and universities to bring a next-generation web experience to the community.

Later this morning we'll join Mayor Reardon at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas, for an event we’ll carry live on the Google YouTube channel—be sure to tune in at 10am PDT to watch.

In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations. We’ve found this in Kansas City. We’ll be working closely with local organizations including the Kauffman Foundation, KCNext and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop the gigabit applications of the future.

Pending approval from the city’s Board of Commissioners, we plan to offer service beginning in 2012. We’ll also be looking closely at ways to bring ultra high-speed Internet to other cities across the country.

Over the past decade, the jump from dial-up to broadband has led to streaming online video, digital music sales, video conferencing over the web and countless other innovations that have transformed communication and commerce. We can’t wait to see what new products and services will emerge as Kansas City moves from traditional broadband to ultra high-speed fiber optic connections.

Now it’s time to get to work.
[youtube]1o7bKLG3A3w[/youtube]

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/ult...+Google+Blog%29

Sound too low on Fedora 14

I've been only started using Fedora for a few days. Previously I've been using uBuntu and still am on my laptop.

The problem with my Fedora is the sound. When I use alsamixer (I type 'alsamixer -c 0' in terimal) I see the 'Master' is at 0. Pretty much at the lowest although there is a small bit of sound left. I can hear if I push my speaker high but not a good idea considering I share the speaker with my laptop. If I brought it up, everything is fine and dandy; that is until I shutdown/restarted. I have to bring it back up again with alsamixer. It's pretty annoying to do it on each time I boot up my Fedora.

Anyway to make it permanent?

Removing carpet over parquet floor

This house was bought from a previous owner. And it seems like they placed carpet over a parquet flooring underneath. Never really cared much but now the carpet starts to have holes on them I want to remove it. Since I have a built-in clothe cabinet, I'm thinking of cutting the carpet around the cabinet and start pulling the carpet. Would this be the alright?

Another things is preparing the parquet flooring. Quite a few years ago my family did on the master bedroom but it was quite sometime ago and I barely remember how we did it but I do know the parquet is not exactly in a good looking condition. The parquet itself is quite fine but it needs some serious refinishing. Some of them are even loose. What type of glue should I get to glue them back?

Advice is seriously needed especially in terms of things to buy and prepare before I start hacking away. Can't have missing a thing after I moved all the furniture out.

By the way, since it's a bedroom, would it livable right after refinishing parquet (lacquer?)?

I also have the polish machine I think from the previous project on the master bedroom.

port forward for webserver

I want to forward a port to my own PC for my webserver. I tried and tried but it still won't work. All it does is open the modem's admin panel instead. I used Belkin previously and it was as straightforward as it is. Get into the port forward settings, put my desired ports and done. But for D-Link I just can't make it to forward to my own pc. I have another D-Link modem which is a 500T I think and its the same thing, only opens up the admin panel. Is there anything else I should set to make it forward to my PC? Something specific to D-Link's modems? My belkin is burnt due to lightning so changing back to that is out of the question.

Current settings:
[attachmentid=1669024]

Form token

Hi,
This is my first time doing tokens for forms so comments and advice are welcome

CODE

if(!$_POST) {
$_SESSION['token'] = $mytoken;
}
else if($_POST) {
if($_SESSION['token'] != $_POST['token']) {
 die("Unauthorized Access");
}
else {
 $_SESSION['token'] = $mytoken;
}
}

My code here does work. On every page refresh the token will change and stored within the session. If a form is submitted, it will compare the token sent by the form with the ones stored in session. If its not the same the script will just die out. If it's true, then the script continues and changes the token yet again.

It works well and all however after googling a few examples on the net, all of 'em are rather long and complicated looking while mine is well, simple. Is what I'm doing enough to properly check the form to avoid CSRF?

Another thing is, where would be the best place to temporary store the token? A friend of mine previously use database. I wish to avoid any extra unnecessary queries if possible. If its the best way, then its fine. Another thing I'm worried regarding this is some of my forms required write ups, for example article. If the writing is taking a very long time, then the session would expire first and all the checking would fail right?

One last question is, what should be used to create the token? Currently I'm using a salt + session_id + time. The time is to make sure it changes on every refresh.

HyDrive, adding extra SSD in laptop

HyDrive

QUOTE

Want a speedy, drop-proof SSD in your laptop? In all but the largest of 'em, you've got just two choices: pay through the nose for a reasonable amount of storage, or settle for a cheaper boot drive at the expense of capacity. Hitachi-LG Data Storage is pulling a Monty Hall by opening door number three -- an optical drive with a built-in 32GB or 64GB SSD. Dubbed the HyDrive and currently being showcased at mysterydrive.net, the product is presently being labeled a "concept," but a set of impressive demo videos already show the ODD / SSD combo booting, multitasking and error-correcting Keanu Reeves like a trained pro. We'll have more details at Computex, at which point we'll let you know whether to be hesitantly expectant or gravely disappointed. Personally, hybrid HDDs be damned -- we want one of these suckers yesterday. Videos after the break.
Source

QUOTE

Hitachi-LG outed most of the major details for its forthcoming HyDrive last week, but the company just officially took the wraps off the world's first SSD-equipped laptop optical drive. Frankly, it's sort of astounding it took this long for such an obvious idea to come to fruition, but now that we're here, we fully expect other outfits to follow suit. Put simply, the HyDrive is a standard form factor optical drive (DVD burner or Blu-ray will be available), but there's a 32GB or 64GB SSD (not just a strip of NAND, we're told) tucked below. When this gets stuffed within a laptop, you're immediately able to access an optical drive, an SSD (for your operating system and critical launch applications) and a spacious HDD for storing music, media, etc. Previously, this type of three-drive arrangement was only available in beastly Clevo's and the like, but this solution is obviously tailor made for even ODD-equipped ultraportables. Another plus to the HyDrive is the integrated Defect Management technology, which essentially caches information from scratched discs (DVDs, namely) in order to play the content back sans jitters.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

If all goes well, the first HyDrive will ship in August 2010 (in South Korea; globally in September) within the 102 Series of Moneual HTPCs, though second-generation devices will scale all the way to 256GB. Other future plans are to slim the HyDrive down and possibly shove it within a netbook, set-top box or tablet (yeah, they name dropped the iPad and HP Slate here at their Computex press briefing), and there's also plans to move from SATA 3Gbps to SATA 6Gbps in due time. Of note, the very first generation will measure in at 12.7mm thick, and we're told that it won't fit into most conventional laptops; instead, it'll be aimed at small form factor (SFF) PCs, HTPCs and other mid-tower desktops. In March 2011, however, Hitachi-LG will be embedding the SSD within the PCB assembly, enabling it to reach a 9.5mm height (and thus, a much larger target market). ASUS has also announced plans to cram the HyDrive into some of its own machines, with the Eee Top all-in-one desktop line getting 'em first and the N61DA laptop getting the slimmer second generation edition.

We aren't generally the betting type, but it seems safe to assume that a whole slew of other PC makers will hop onboard here -- there's not likely to be too much of a price hike, and the benefits in terms of overall performance and system flexibility will surely appeal to the technophile crowd. Speaking of MSRPs, the company wouldn't reveal individual stickers, noting that OEM agreements prevented that kind of disclosure. It did say that an average thin-and-light priced at $649 sans an SSD would likely be priced at $849 with a HyDrive, shedding light on an estimated $200 uptick in price with a lower-level HyDrive in place. We asked if retail sales were being considered, and were told that it was "a possibility" for future years (but it wasn't going to happen in 2010).

During the Q&A, we also learned that Hitachi-LG wouldn't be targeting Blu-ray HyDrives within netbooks (expected), but that DVD-equipped versions would be ideal for lower-cost laptops, tablets and slates of the future. In case you're wondering, both slot-load and tray-style models will eventually ship. Hit the gallery below for a slide-by-slide look at today's Computex unveiling... if you're into that type of thing, that is.

Source

[youtube]arde0KIvll0[/youtube]

Table-less with fluid width

Ok, here's the thing, I want to create a table-less template with 2 columns. Left side is a fixed 200px width div, and the main column (right) that I wish for it to scale accordingly (eg; to different resolutions).

The problem is, I know how to do if both are fixed or both are fluid (using percentage), however combining those 2 together is something I have not done before. Any tips if anyone have ever done it?

I wish to avoid using percentage on both (eg; left: 20%, right: 80%) as that would be 'eat' whatever inside the left column (its for menu) when scaling down resolutions.

LCD for Designer

OK, I am in a need of a new monitor as my laptop has not been doing any justice at all since the colors pretty much sucks. So, my question is, what would be the right monitor for me? I need color accuracy more than anything. The could be some light games in between but there won't be any fast paced games like FPS and such. I'm more of an RTS (and plays it slowly).

I'm presuming an LCD with e-IPS panel? What would be your recommendation?

My other requirement would be 22"/24" (bigger is better).

Many Thanks

Power Socket

I'll be having a trip to paris and london and was wondering what kind of socket do they have there? Do I need an adapter? Is there anything I should know, like different voltage ratings?

For the records, I'll be using this 3 electrical equipments:

- NiMH AA Battery Charger (MAHA)
- PSP Charger
- Sony Ericsson Charger

I find this on Google on Paris' socket:

It mentions something about Paris is 220V. Is it something to worry about?

I can't seem to find anything on London though. Do they use a different socket?

Streamyx daily cap?

I've been observing my internet this last couple of weeks, and I started to notice my speed will decrease as the time of day passes. Let say after 12PM it gets down 800kbps, after 5PM its down to 320kbps which will last until the next day. My speed will only be reset after 9AM next day of which I'm assuming its the start of their office hour (true?). Let say it's Friday, my speed will actually last until next Monday 9AM!

Today, well since its Raya Haji, my speed has remain 320kbps even though it's 10AM already. I bet the office is close so no one to reset the caps.

Have anyone notice this kind of behavior with their connections?
