Are you able to provide the right conditions for your pet (temperature, humidity etc)?
- What type of disposition do you want in your pet?
- How hardy is it and how easy is it to feed**?
- What color, shape and size do you want and is that snake readily available?

** Are appropriate feeder animals readily available? rats? mice? rabbits? quail? chicken? NO you cannot convert your snake to be vegetarian. And are you willing to purchase such animals and feed live prey? If not, are you willing to pre-kill a prey animal, or store frozen feeders in your freezer?

Many snakes are protected so check with authorities in your area on laws governing your choice of snake.

In our case will be PERHILITAN... Here are some useful links that might help.

Guide to the list of CITES Species
PERHILITAN's Official Webpage
PERHILITAN Licensing Department/Services

- The most important consideration when purchasing a pet snake is that you understand you are making a commitment to it for many years. Snakes have long lifespans... up to 25-30 years in captivity, some breeds even longer. If you have a small home or apartment, you may want to consider one of the smaller species rather than going for a big snake like a burm or retic. Bigger snakes are also more costly to feed.

I also feel very strongly that if you can say you cant afford the feeders, cant afford a bigger enclosure when it's time to upgrade, can't afford vet bills, no time/cannot afford to renew your licence... you can't afford that snake. Don't pick a snake on impulse just because the animal itself is "cheap" without knowing what you're getting yourself into.

Other Useful Links
Things To Consider Before Buying a Specialty Animal
What To Know Before Buying A Pet Snake
Thinking of Owning a Pet Snake?

***NEW - Akta 716 - http://www.wildlife.gov.my/pengumuman/Wildlife%20Conservation%20Act%202010%20Act716.pdf

Guidelines - Selecting A Healthy Snake

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

- Observe the snake. The snake should not be too thin (pronounced backbone), or have an asymmetrical appearance to the body.

- Check for alertness and vigor. A snake with good weight that is active in its cage and regularly flicks its tongue as it moves is probably healthy. Snakes that are coiled in a shelter or a cage corner are probably resting or sleeping. The only way to make sure a snake is vigorous is to ask the seller to allow you to handle it or to show you how the snake moves in its cage or in his or her hands. Healthy snakes give a clear impression of strength and vigor when in hand. Avoid snakes that look or feel weak and limp.

- Check with your breeder or dealer to make sure that the snake is feeding properly, and on what prey animal has it been feeding on. You can also ask for a feeding demo to be absolutely sure. (I personally do not buy snakes unless I have seen for myself that it is eating well.)

- Check for kinks in the backbone and tail and depressions in the ribcage.

- Skin should be free from injuries, bumps, raised scales or blisters.

- Check for respiratory infection. Gently press up on the underside of the throat and check to see if any bubbly mucus emerges from the sides of the mouth or the nostrils; this is a sign of respiratory infection. Gaping and forced exhalations are other signs of respiratory disease.

- Listen to the snake's breathing. A healthy snake should not be wheezing, making popping/clicking noises when it breathes, or sneezing excessively.

- Check for mites. These tiny external parasites appear like crawling little black beads on the skin, or they can be seen as a tiny, raised edge when lodged in the corners of the eyes. Tiny white flecks on the snake’s body are a good indicator of mites. These are usually mite feces.

- There should be no swelling around the jaw, and the mouth should be able to close all the way, and not stick out at one edge. If you can check the inside of the snake's mouth, it should be a fresh pink colour. It should not look red and inflammed, should not have any excessive mucus in the throat, or have a cheesy/cottony appearance.

- Look at the underside of the snake. The belly scales should have no signs of swelling between scales. The belly should not have brown or reddish discolored areas, or scales that appear raised, roughened or ragged as if the edges were chewed. There should also be no crusting or fecal smears around the vent (anus). A swollen or crusted vent and fecal smears are signs of parasites or bacterial infections.

Sources:
http://snakesdirect.com/choosing-a-healthy-snake/
http://animal-world.com/encyclo/reptiles/s...esselection.php

CARE SHEETS
*These are basic care sheets for commonly kept snakes here.
As requested by max-oasism..... here is Snake Thread Version 4!! Let us all resume our discussions and sharing about these majestic and beautiful creatures here~

And for the perusal of people new to the hobby.... here are some care sheets and information that may be useful before making the decision to bringing home your first pet.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE OWNING A SNAKE

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

- How much do you want to spend?
- How much space do you have for it? Are you able to provide the right conditions for your pet (temperature, humidity etc)?
- What type of disposition do you want in your pet?
- How hardy is it and how easy is it to feed**?
- What color, shape and size do you want and is that snake readily available?

** Are appropriate feeder animals readily available? rats? mice? rabbits? quail? and no you cannot feed your snake chicken breast, meatballs, sausages... cicak... frogs... fish (unless if your snake DOES naturally eat such prey e.g water snakes)... whatever "creative" ideas you might have, for long term. Neither can you convert your snake to be vegetarian.

***NEW - Akta 716 - http://www.wildlife.gov.my/pengumuman/Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 Act716.pdf
Perhilitan will not be issuing any new permits for CITES sps. atm... only a "verification letter", and will call owners in June/July 2011 to collect the new liceses due to the implementation of the new laws. HOWEVER please take note that receipts are only valid for application for 14 DAYS... so please do not delay your applications, and make sure your receive your letter first!
